INTROdUcTION from the president

The Young Originals Exhibition 2010 sees a new direction for this highly anticipated event in the calendar of Western Australian Public Schools. The Western Australian Secondary School Executives Association (WASSEA) has negotiated to underwrite the cost of the exhibition in 2010.

Young Originals is hosted by Edith Cowan University and supported by the Department of Education through the Arts Teacher Development Centre and ArtsEdge, a strategic arts, and education partnership between the Department of Culture and the arts and the Department of Education.

Young Originals provides an opportunity to celebrate the creative and innovative arts programs taught in public schools and to recognise the talent of emerging young artists.

After viewing the many and varied entries received in 2010 it is clear that students are being provided with the opportunities to express themselves artistically in exciting and imaginative ways and I would like to acknowledge the commitment of the teachers and principals in our schools who make this possible.

I congratulate the students who have had their work selected for exhibition and I wish them well in their future endeavours.

I hope you enjoy Young Originals 2010 and recognise that it is indeed a testament to the wonderful work occurring everyday in the classrooms of public schools throughout Western Australia.

CoNNiE PEtRilloConnie Petrillo has a Masters in Curatorial Studies in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Connie is Curator of Art at Edith Cowan University and a practicing professional artist best known for her large-scale narrative paintings.

lyNdA KUNtyjLynda Kuntyj graduated from the University of Western Australia with a major in Fine Art History and Theory. The following year, she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Secondary Art Education, receiving the honorary medallion and Pat Duffy Award for excellence in art teaching.

Lynda has broad teaching experience and has worked internationally in Vietnam through the Access Asia cultural development fellowship program. A practising artist, Lynda has exhibited widely and received numerous awards for her artwork. Her printmaking was selected for the Art Gallery of Western Australias Boundless Exhibition, and as a finalist in the Montana World of Wearable Art, her work remains in their collection.

Lynda has been a selector for the Year 12 Perspectives at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Educator, consultant, curriculum writer Lynda is currently the Visual Arts Teacher Development Centre Coordinator for the Department of Education.

SElEcTION pANEl for Young originals

dR liSA PARiSDr Lisa Paris is a senior Lecturer in visual arts education in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, Perth.

She coordinates the training of all secondary visual arts teachers and teaches into the visual arts curriculum studies component of the degrees. She worked as a tertiary entrance examiner for the Curriculum Council of WA from 2000 2007 and has been a selector for the prestigious Perspectives exhibition on a number of occasions.

Preceding her appointment to the University Lisa taught for more than 20 years as a visual arts specialist at both primary and secondary level in a range of metropolitan and country schools and her students were recipients of a number of independent awards for excellence.

dAEvid ANdERSoN Daevid has been painting and drawing since a young age and has been gaining recognition recently for his highly technical and diverse figurative works.

Focusing on portraiture, Daevids paintings and drawings push at the boundaries and traditions of the genre, creating visually striking and conceptually interesting pieces.

This year Daevids work was Highly Commended amongst the 42 finalists at the prestigious Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, receiving high praise from the judges.

In 2009 Daevid was chosen to be part of Artrages 25th anniversary Silver exhibition held at PICA, and also was one of three artists on the selection panel for the Young Originals exhibition. This year he will reprise that role again, selecting the students works to be exhibited at Edith Cowan University.
