The 2012 Young Leadworker of the year was made to Daniel Farmer, of Shepton Mallet based Ellis and Co at the Roofing Awards held at the London Metropole Hotel on Friday 17th May. BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid gave Daniel the Trophy as she was hosting the Awards. Daniel emerged as the winner following a two-day practical assessment competition at the LSA’s training centre in East Peckham, Kent, where six candidates were asked to produce a series of pieces of work, and four were shortlisted for the Award. Some excellent work was produced by all candidates, but the panel of four judges – Nigel Johnston and Andrew Steer (LSA), and Nigel Miles and Vince McKee (LCA) were unanimous in selecting Daniel as the winner of this prestigious award, as he displayed a professional and confident approach in producing some technically excellent work, with detail that superseded the brief given to all entrants. As part of the prize Daniel also received a set of leadwork tools to the value of £300, a copy of the Rolled Lead Sheet – The Complete Manual, and a Training Bursary worth up to £3500 towards a formal leadwork QCF. The three runners-up – James Lloyd-Hughes (Geoff Neal Roofing), Jamie Avery (self-employed) and Harry Blain (self-employed) – also displayed a very high standard of work and each received a copy of the manual and three days of personalised leadwork development training. As region after region across the UK has recently reported significant reductions in incidences of metal theft, there is clear evidence that the battle is being won. Concerted and co-ordinated campaigns by police forces across the country, such as Operation Tornado, and the introduction of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, which has made it almost impossible to make a profit from stolen lead by outlawing cash transactions, and sophisticated yet cost effective anti-theft devices have all contributed to some impressive results. Nationwide, there was a 43.7% reduction in metal theft during 2012, whilst the specialist church and heritage property insurer, Ecclesiastical, has reported that the theft of metal from church roods in 2012 was at its lowest level since 2006, and insurance claims from Anglican churches fell by almost 65% compared to the previous year. Issue 12 - Summer 2013

The Lead Sheet Association is keen to support and develop young talent in lead work and this is the second year it has run its competition to find the best young leadworker in the country. The 2012 Young Leadworker of the year was made to Daniel Farmer, of Shepton Mallet based Ellis and Co at the Roofing Awards held at the London Metropole Hotel on Friday 17th May. BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid gave Daniel the Trophy as she was hosting the Awards.

displayed a professional and confident approach in producing some technically excellent work, with detail that superseded the brief given to all entrants.

Rolled lead sheet has been used for centuries and is one of the most sustainable building materials there is. It may have been around for years but it is also a great contemporary building material.

The Lead Sheet Association has also long been a sponsorof the RIBA Awards by making the familiar award plaques, and now it has teamed up with the RIBA Journal to find the best examples of new buildings using British Standard lead.

The RIBA Journal will publish the best examples as part of a special feature which is an excellent opportunity to showcase your work using this fantastic material.

To put your project forward email the RIBA Journal examples of your projects. The material used must be British Standard Rolled Lead Sheet BS EN 12588.

Send your projects to [email protected], contact RIBA Journal on 0207 496 8329 or send by post to: Richard Tomlin, RIBA Journal, 15 Bonhill Street, London EC2P 2EA

A new system of marking lead with coded microdots to deter metal theft has recently been installed at a brand new accommodation block at the Brockwood Park School in Bramdean, Hampshire.

Trace-in-Metal has developed a method of firing coded microdots into lead at a precise velocity, which survive melting. When the lead is melted down, the dots can be recovered by refiners making it possible for authorities to trace the metal to its original location, significantly raising the risk for anyone dealing in stolen lead.

Architect and site manager, Mike Davies, explains, “Lead is traditional, aesthetic and easily recyclable and alternative materials do not meet our standards, which is why we wanted to use it; the only problem was stopping it being stolen.”

The LSA is working with the NHBC on a CPD in Building Magazine that will highlight some of the common installation and specification issues that can occur on housing developments. Designed to help housebuilders get the best out of lead, using the LSA and NHBC’s expertise, the CPD will be available in print and online from 5th July for 6 weeks. Visit www.building.co.uk to access it and earn accredited CPD points.

The LSA is working more and more with housebuilders and in particular is looking into developing a pre-formed dormer window to help with ease of installation on site.

The LSA recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the opening of its purpose-built training facility in East Peckham, Kent. Over those five years, the LSA has developed its range of courses in response to the needs of installers and employers, offering a flexible approach to allow participants to get the most out of their training in a well-equipped environment that recreates real-life situations.

Whatever your experience, we are sure to have a course to suit anyone wishing to increase their expertise not just in the use of Lead, but also with other Hard Metals.

As well as offering flexible payment terms to suit individual circumstances, various grants are also available which may mean that the cost of a course is reduced to a surprisingly small amount or may even be at no cost to you. We can advise the best way of finding which of the many grants that are available, you may be eligible for – you may be surprised how cheap a training course can be.

Visit our website for more information, to view a course prospectus, and to complete a simple online assessment form which will help us work with you to find the right course for you.

Downloadable AutoCAD drawings have recently been streamlined on the LSA website, making it easier and quicker to find the drawing you need for flashing, roofing, cladding, guttering and dormers. With simple, easy to follow menus, all drawings are available in pdf format, as well as in AutoCAD format. To access the AutoCAD drawings for rolled lead sheet online, simply click here >

All British Standard lead manufactured to BS EN 12588 by LSA Members now carries an LSA Approved Manufacturers logo.

From the 1st July, all manufacturing members of the LSA will also carry the European Standard CE mark on their lead sheet as well, a further guarantee of quality.

Don’t forget that The Lead Sheet Association is now a CITB-Construction Skills HS&E Test Centre for anyone wanting to take a test in relation to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) not only for students taking an LSA training course, but also for anyone working in a construction related job.

Possession of a CSCS card demonstrates that a construction worker has sufficient professional skills to work in the construction industry at a specific level, as well as having a sufficient understanding of health and safety practices. The possession of a CSCS card is becoming increasingly essential to work on construction sites.

For more information about taking the CSCS test with a view to obtaining your CSCS card, please call us on 01622 872432.

There has never been a better time to enrol your employees on a Specialist Apprenticeship Programme (SAP) thanks to recently introduced additional funding that has been made available for employers.

Aimed at those who are or intend to be involved in installing Lead or Hard Metal weathering to buildings, the SAP training programme provides a Lead or Hard Metal apprentice with two years training and results in a QCF Level 2 Qualification. It combines attendance at the LSA training centre with on-site training and assessments.

In addition to the existing funding already available, employers may now be eligible for a total payment of £1640 per learner paid quarterly based on 80% value of attendance and a lump sum of 20% on completion of programme.

This additional funding means that a total of over £10,000 is currently available for eligible employers of SAP candidates. As the cost of a SAP course charged by the LSA is currently just £5326.50, it really can pay to enrol your employees on the Specialist Apprentice Programme.

Employers will need to sign a contract with CITB, and prospective learners must be aged 19 or over, live in England and work for an employer registered in England.

Please note that this additional funding for SAP courses is only available to those who register until July 2014 and to a very limited number of candidates on a first come first served basis, so be sure to act fast to avoid missing out on this rare opportunity.

For more information about eligibility and application for this funding, please contact us.

Bookings are now open for the Design and Specification of Sheet Leadwork courses run in conjunction with the LABC.
