Notes from the Young Leaders Network

Workshop #3 – 13 June 2018

Thank you to members that came along to the third Young Leaders Network workshop in

Campbell Town on Wednesday.

The day started with a recap on previous notes including a quick look at the Young

Leaders Network Private Page on the Hub, Young Leaders Profiles and the Career

Discovery Days.

Here is a brief update.

Young Leaders Network Hub Page & Profile

https://events.agedservicestas.com.au/programs-and-initiatives/young-leaders-network/

Career Discovery Days

https://events.agedservicestas.com.au/event-espresso/careers-in-the-aged-services-

sector/

Fiona reported that organisations within the Aged Service Sector have been really

supportive by hosting Career Discovery Days around the State. This year they have been

held in Smithton, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart with another 6 planned (around the

State) for the remainder of 2018.

Registrations for all past Career Discovery Days have been at capacity with schools and

colleges really embracing the opportunity to find out what a career in the Aged Services

Sector is all about.

The Career Discovery Days allows for students to talk to young people that work within the

Sector to discuss the wide variety of job roles.

If any member would like to take part in one of these sessions, please let Fiona know.

Getting Started – Changing the Perception of working in the Aged Services Sector

Building on the previous two workshops, members of the Young Leaders Network met in

Campbell Town to work on the design, development and production of one of the videos

that the young leaders identified as an important way of ‘Changing the Perception of

working in the Sector’.

Notes from Young Leaders Network Workshop 13 June 2018 3

Many agreed that there is a misconception that there is only one job role and no career

opportunities. One way of getting the message out there was to put together short videos.

To help put the video together, we were joined by staff and students from Bayview

Secondary College in Hobart. Bridget and Ronny (staff), Connor (grade 8) and Aiden

(grade 10) students. Connor and Aiden are studying multi-media and are very

experienced already in producing material for Chargers Basketball team and manage all

the AV equipment for their school.

In preparing discussion points for the video, members discussed:

o key messages that were important to be included.

o Who was the target audience for the video

As as result of the morning session we captured the following:

•Working in the Aged Services is a Career Pathway of Choice

•It is rewarding, flexible and supportive

•There are a whole range of diverse job roles

•you get to have an impact and make a difference in the life of older Tasmanians

•Your skills are transferable

•you are not just an employee

•plenty of opportunites to develop new skills

•you meet some awesome people

Key Messages - what we want people to know...

•School and Colleges (grades 7-12+)

•Teachers and Career Advisors

•Residential and Home & Community organisations

•Clients accessing services

•Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA)

•Government Departments (Dept of Education Tas Health Services etc)

Audience - who is the video for?

By the end of the day each of our members were able to talk about why they love doing

what they do, the impact they have made and the opportunities they see. This was

recorded and the team from Bayview Secondary College will bring back to the Network a

draft for comment and review.

Summary

We covered a lot throughout the day and captured strong key messages that as a Sector

can be used to promote our industry as a career choice.

If you were unable to come along you haven’t missed out! We still have plenty of projects

to work on and this includes other short videos that tell your stories.

This Network will enable you to lead these projects and we are very exciting to see where

you take us.
