Young Enterprise Framework of Support for Good Career Guidance, Employability and Enterprise Education at Key Stage 3, 4 & 5

It is well researched that young people who experience four or more encounters with employers during their time at school are five times less likely to become NEET and earn, on average, 16% more than their peers.(1)

At Young Enterprise (YE), we recognise the need for educators to have both choice and access to high quality opportunities that create aspirational careers guidance, develop employability skills and deliver inspirational enterprise education. Learning by doing and engaging local volunteer employees in the classroom are at the heart of Young Enterprise’s approach to teaching and learning. We have access to over 6,000 volunteers from a range of industry sectors who support our programmes. Through these programmes, students gain a first-hand insight into the career of local employees and learn about the skills which are valued in the workplace.

Young Enterprise programmes support good educational practice by:

• providing a learning environment that creates space for invention, management and calculation of risk, and values learning from mistakes

• using authentic, practical experiences and resources; applying active learning methods that encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and development by adopting a collaborative, problem orientated approach

• following an experiential learning cycle that involves structured and varied tasks to enable pupils to participate in business experience, reflect on their experience, identify and then apply the learnings into new situations

• encouraging self-assessment and recording that aids reflection and prompts identification of skills

In addition to supporting the development of employability skills, all Young Enterprise programmes support Character Education, helping schools ensure that young people develop the skills and character to succeed academically, have a fulfilling career, and make a positive contribution to British society:

• perseverance, resilience and grit• confidence and optimism• motivation, drive and ambition• community spirit• tolerance and respect• honesty, integrity and dignity• conscientiousness, curiosity and focus

This framework shows how the Young Enterprise suite of high quality educational programmes support:

• Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools(2) (England) and Careers and the World of Work(3) (Wales)

• The Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance(4)

• Inspiring and raising aspirations through encounters with employers and employees• Developing and applying employability skills, preparing young people to get jobs and

build successful careers• Developing the knowledge and understanding of students including increased

self awareness We welcome the opportunity to work together to deliver impact for the young people in your school/college based on your need.
