ERCOFTAC's course onComputationalAeroacoustics

ERCOFTAC organises a new session ofthe Computational Aeroacoustics Course. Itwill take place at ONERA in Châtillon nearParis (France) the 4 and 5th of June.

This course is intended for researchersin industry and in academia including Ph.D.Students with a good knowledge in fluidmechanics, who would like to build up orwiden their knowledge in the field ofaeroacoustics (modeling, computational toolsand industrial applications). It will first providea comprehensive overview of recent insightsof aeroacoustics theories (Lighthill’s analogyand vortex sound theory, extensive hybridapproaches and wave extrapolation methods, duct acoustics). A number of practicalproblems involving the coupling betweenCFD’s results and CAA will be also thoroughlydiscussed (e.g. how design a mesh size foraeroacoustics applications using large eddysimulation, inclusion of mean flow effects viahybrid formulations such as the acousticperturbation equations, presence of surfaces, aeroacoustic couplings, …) and realisticapplications performed by the instructors(aeronautics, car industry, propulsion, energy,…) will be discussed. Advancedcomputational aeroacoustics methods will bealso presented as well as what we can learnfrom the direct computation of aerodynamicnoise. Finally, specific topics reflectingparticipant interests will be discussed in a

Abstract

The efficiency of ultrasound hyper-thermia for anti-cancer treatments such asradiotherapy or chemotherapy can beimproved by using sonosensitizers, which arematerials that enhance the attenuation anddissipation of acoustic energy. We proposethe use of magnetic nanoparticles assonosensitizers because of their biocom-patibility, nontoxicity, and common use inseveral medical applications. A magneticmaterial was synthetized and thenincorporated in the form of a magnetic fluid inagar tissue-mimicking phantoms. Ultrasoundhyperthermia studies were conducted atvarious ultrasound frequencies and con-centrations of magnetic nanoparticles in thephantoms. The theoretical modeling basedon a heat transfer equation and the experi-mental results show good agreement andconfirm that the temperature rise duringultrasound heating in tissue-mimicking phan-toms doped with sonosensitizers is greaterthan that in a pure agar phantom.

Furthermore, on the basis of Pennes’bio-heat equation, which takes intoconsideration the blood perfusion andmetabolic heat, the thermal dose and lesionshapes after sonication were determined for ahypothetical tissue.
