BALL 2 i iDwJ67Congratulations to John Driver on

his return to form last week in UHSOld Boys Reserves . A pre-season hipinjury has hampered John over thepast weeks, but last Saturday showedthat he is returning to his great formof last year, it should not be longbefore he returns to the senior side.

Congratulations to David Clark andSteve Barry on their appointment asCaptain and Vice Captain of CoburgJuniors, also to our under 17 playerswho have made the team this season, and a welcome to all the new players .

Captain G. Sceney played his 50thsenior game for La Trobe last Satur-day, the first student to have done so .

Congratulations to David Miles ofthe A.N.Z . Bank, who played his 50thmatch last Saturday. He has been agreat clubman over the last few sea-sons, and we look forward to manymore games from him. Best wishesalso to Peter Lamb, who has beentransferred to Perth. He has servedthe club well for many years, andwe wish him all the best for thefuture.

Good to see the new boys fittinginto the side so well at Ormond, namely Jeff Russ, T. Crumpton, D .Grace, Peter Lavery, Paul Dexter andR. Jenkins. Ably backed up by the"oldies" the blending of the twolooks like producing another goodteam for 1970 . Bernie Blight, Ian (Cap-tain) Cameron, Graeme Moran andRoger Wood also showing great earlyform .

Monash Captain Nick Rogers play-ed a fine game last Saturday . Nickscored 8 goals in a good exhibitionof centre-half-forward play. Nick waswell fed by Pete Lamb and Brian Mc-Master in the centre and the threewere greatly instrumental in Monash'swin .

All at Elsternwick wish Billy Hunt-ing all the best during his two yearsnational service. Elsternwick Juniors

have been mesmerising their oppon-ents not only with teamwork but withtriple vision in the form of the New-ton brothers Mick, Robert and Rich-ard. Elsternwick's new boys IanSekac, Vince Peters, Terry Benfoldand Bob Garbutt have been showingsome of the old hands how to do it,while our boom "Davis Cup" recruitPeter "Rubber" Smitheram has reallybeen knocking them down .

The wheels of fortune have turnedagain in Commonwealth Bank, andsoon to leave us is our dynamicsocial secretary Peter "Gloves" Mit-chell to take up appointment in NewGuinea. Gloves, who was the main-stay behind the success of last year'sfunctions, especially the Carnival, be-lieves in the motto "The Elephantdrinks a lot, when he's hot" .

Congratulations to Kew's "Bags"Kins, and Ray Crowe for their fineefforts of 50 games each. Both aregreat team men and we are lookingforward to the next 50 .

Despite a flood of offers UniversityJuniors has fortunately managed toretain Barry "Mumbles" Johnston ascoach. Popular Bob Girdwood hasbeen elected Captain and is provingeven more volatile than last year.Diminutive Vice-captain is Tim Cos-tello; well done Bob and Tiny! Fullforward Graham Lowe is in magnifi-cent form and if not promoted (ordropped) should kick 100 goals withease . After rounding off the week'straining at Poyntons on Friday nightDave King turned in a fine game lastweek. The first turn of the year isnext week at John Ryan's place .

Tony Tesoriero, "Mocca" Bilstonand Ed Scrhwarzman were the starsof St. Kilda CBOC's victory over wor-thy opponents in Old Halleyburians ."Mocca" continued on the good workfrom last week whilst "Tessa" and Edkept the forward line open, particu-larly in the last quarter.

AMP Reserves ended a Trinity ovaldrought with a great victory in a hair-raising finish. An outstanding debutby Gerry McHugh on the half-backflank was the highlight and a placein the senior side is now only a for-mality. In a team of many good play-ers special mentions to "Moose","Snail", Collery and Rig Bell for hissubtle half-time address !

Highlights from Old Ivanhoe'sgames last week. "Woofas" great one-handed mark that resulted in the firstgoal for the Reserves . "The Streak"Stevens' nippy interception and leftfoot snap for a goal in the main game.

Old Trinity's Reserves Captain-coach Terry Hense nearly pulled offthe mark of a life-time last week .After getting a great "lift" fromteam-mate Mick Burke, Terry got upso high he was looking for a landingplace and did not keep his eyes on theball .

Congratulations go to all membersof R.O .B. side who pulled together ina team effort led by Laurie McLaugh-lin, `°Spidge" Martin and Wayne Jar-vie to finally overwhelm the opposi-tion in the later stages of the game.

If all Tooronga-Malvern players hadthe keenness of Noel Graham wecould not help but succeed. Due toArmy commitments he is currentlytravelling hundreds of miles to playwith the club, and the travelling iscertainly not detracting from hisgame.

Congratulations to Hayden Bristow,Bruce Warner and Kerry Nolan -skipper, deputy and third man atGlenhuntly for '70 . The same to Ian(Father Xmas) McKane as skipper ofthe Reserves . The honours are welldeserved by the boys .

Roly poly Barry Hecker, betterknown around Ivanhoe park as"Sammy" has proved something of adead eye around goals in his firstcouple of appearances this year. We

think "Sam's" appointment as Vice-captain of the Reserves must have in-spired him. And of course that pre-season training with "Jaw" must havehelped, too .

When shifted into the pivot Foot-scray Tech's Domenic Fugazzoto(Dom!) really burned, kicking fousgoals and featuring in many others .Ably assisted by his shadow, "TheSparrow", on the wing . These twowere largely responsible for Tech Re-serves' great comeback win .

A tribute to a great president, Mr .Lindsay Burfurd whose work for theOld Camberwell club is one of themain reasons why the club has sucha great opportunity to do well thisseason. Already Lin has a vision offlying two premiership flags from thePavilion next season . Let's not lethim down .

Collegians' best on the day againstMelbourne High were Ken Boundy (afirst year boy) Graham Richards, RobWebster, Noel Boucher (another firstyear player) Rick Edwards and PaulMunn (2 goals) . Doctor Vivian (clutM.O.) was forced to examine hisyoung son David after the game fo7possible concussion but he gave himall clear (thank goodness), all ourother injured players are progressingsatisfactorily.

Despite a great last quarter OldXaverians could not make up thelarge leeway they faced at three-quarter time and were beaten by ninepoints . Once again it was hard to flncone player who contributed for thewhole one hundred minutes but BedeGibson and Brian Hayden playedgood solid games while Gavin Wood-ruff with seven goals came into thegame late - may have had some-thing to do with a wedding on theprevious day. Congratulations are ex•tended to Michael Mulcahy and hisnew wife Marie .

The first two matches on MHS'soval for four years brought victorylast week. Dozens of spectatorspacked around the ground gave greatmoral support to the home teams .It was good to see Mrs. Betty Har-ley's smiling face in the crowd againafter being in hospital recently andto hear her voicing her approval .

Old Carey has started the seasonin great style under its popular newcoach Graham Johnston, former Es-sendon half forward . Graham played71 senior games with the Bombersand was a member of the 1962 and1965 premiership teams . Graham, who is an old Wesley boy, has theteam very fit. Attendance at traininghas never been better and enthusiasmis high at Old Carey this year.

Jimmy Esmonde turned in a greatgame for St . Kilda CBOC reservesin his last performance as a bache-lor . A bad shoulder injury kept himout for all of last season, and pro-vided he can gain enough freedom inhis new state . he should return tothe seniors before too many roundshave been played . His official scratch-ing from the W-A.P. award is timedfor 4.30 p .m. this Saturday. Con-grats. Jimmy, from all at St. Kilda .

This week MHSOB are thinking ofgiving Bruce "fleet of foot" More thewhole half back line to mind . Severalfine marking duels with up to fouropposition players saw the ball roos-ted on to Melb . High's forward lineand "Fleeta" in the best players.

Footscray's new "Brophy" (Alan)showed his potential by booting twomagnificent goals from difficult ang-les last week. I was sitting next tobrother Pete when Al dobbed hisgoals, And Pete took all the creditfor the two kicks Al .

Old Carey Captain Richard (Reg)Elliott, centre half back Murray Wil-cox, winger Roger Gamble and centre

half forward Rodney Sharp havestruck form early and look set for agood season .

Damien Keleher put in a good onefor De La Reserves last Saturday, pulling down good marks and reallyshowing how the play-op, game shouldbe played. He certainly deserved thattrophy .

M .1 4S . have a budding young fullforward in Barrie "Baldy" Macdonaldcoming up through the reserves ."Baldy's" strong marking was saidby many to be due to the glaringreflection off his hair-depleted cran-ium blinding the opposition backs .But thin on top or not, he's stillusing his head. Keep it up Mac .

Unusual to see Footscray Tech'spresident Ian Scott being taken fora walk last Saturday by the familydog- Good to see another Scott onthe Hamner surface .

Congratulations to UHS Old Boysfull forward Ron Johnson for kickinghis 100th goal for the club . Ron isshort for a full-forward, but with hispace and strong marking has proved agood player for UHS Old Boys in thetime he has been with the club .

The Parkside Ladies' Committeewish to thank Mrs Kane, Snr. andMrs Fisher for their generous dona-tions . With donations like these theladies look like having another bum-per fund-raising season for the club, but keep those soft drinks, hot dogsand other sales flowing, girls .

Across the Fields to the Banks, it'sBleeder to Gympie - As I was other-wise engaged at the weekend chapsthere is not much to report . Maurice°`Jacko" Jackson went well in frontof goals, Stevie "Shovel" Cole alsonotched five majors, the Harveys, nowthere's a strange name to see withoutbat and ball, turned in splendid gamesfor Parkside. Short and sweet, PoisonPen .
