McGoodwin Honored with Namesake in Liberia, West Africa

Lovetie Browne Major is a force of nature and My Heart’s Appeal is her mission. She has written a book and started a program for people with disabilities in Liberia to honor her sister Tatima who has a disability. Many entities, including the North Oklahoma City Rotary, the Northwest Chamber of Commerce, LWPB Architecture, several churches and many others, are helping Lovetie raise $300,000 for 100 acres of land in Liberia. Even the folks with disabilities at Dale Rogers Training Center have contributed by donating the proceeds from some small fundraisers that they held for My Heart’s Appeal. On an icy and snowy evening earlier this year, several people were honored for their personal achievement, commitment to excellence and dedication to services including Gayle Curry, the Graphic and Media

Coordinator at Dale Rogers Training Center, who is also known for her beautiful fine art. The surprise of the evening was County Commissioner Brian Maughan who pre-sented a special citation from Governor Fallin to Connie Thrash McGoodwin and announced that My Heart’s Appeal was honoring her by naming the first building to be built the Connie McGoodwin Vocational Training Center. Classes started meeting last year as Lovetie continues to raise funds for the land and other components of a learning and training hub. There are currently no programs for children or teens with disabilities in Liberia. Lovetie has pulled together a coalition of private and government entities who are working towards those goals and legislation to support it.

McGoodwin praised Lovetie and said it is her pleasure to help Lovetie pursue her mission with both Connie’s person-al time and resources that Dale Rogers Training Center can provide. “Dale Rogers is always willing to support other providers or new programs to the extent that our resources allow” says McGoodwin. “This is a real honor to me”, says McGoodwin, “my son even did a shout out on Facebook!” That’s ultimate praise. “It will give us great honor and pride to name our vocational training hub after a trailblazer who has spent her entire career paving the way and altering the minds of society and eventually proving the fact that everyone can be productive if given a chance,” said Lovetie.

Dale Rogers Training Center has always had amazing longevity of staff, close to 20% of staff and management have been here close to 10 years, several over 20 years. Back in 1988 when I had been at Dale Rogers Training Center for 7 to 8 years I interviewed a 31 year old young man, Jerry Weddington, for a procurement position. While he was young and green and didn’t have a background in the field, there was an honesty and earnestness about him that I in-stantly liked. He told me I’d never regret hiring him and I never did. Jerry worked himself up through many positions: NISH Liaison, Business Manager, Assistant Director, and spearheading Ability One/NISH development. We were much smaller then and I consid-ered Jerry a partner. Dale Rogers Training Center started going through so much growth and change during those years. I always felt Jerry and I had each other’s backs, our different management styles seemed to complement each other.

Jerry’s playfulness, corny jokes and love of OU earned him a place in the hearts of staff and clients alike, it was impossible to “not like” the open hearted Jerry. Several years after he began working here, I was with my family at the Arts Festival one day and saw Jerry ahead of me. As I started to call out his name, an older gentleman walking in front of him tripped and dropped everything the old gent was carrying. No one but Jerry stopped to help the man gather his things. I knew without doubt that this was a young man with a good heart.

As an Executive Director of a Dallas agency, prior to coming to Oklahoma, I knew first hand how difficult and complicated federal contracting could be. Jerry was undaunted and jumped all over contracting through Tinker Air Force Base, over time he developed into a savvy businessman. He developed experience with NISH/Ability One and expertise in many types of government contracting and budgeting.

Dale Rogers Training Center has contin-ued to add exceptional management partners with different degrees and areas of expertise; we currently employ 200 staff serving 1300 people with disabilities per year. This has allowed the agency to develop many innovative programs – across six different locations – while provid-

ing the widest array of services in Oklahoma. Jerry continued to be vital to the growing Administration team. I’m sure there were many times the Board of Directors or I got credit for things that Jerry did a lot of the heavy lifting on. No one tried or worked harder than Jerry, that was part of his “old fashioned” value system, a rarity in people these days.

Jerry celebrated his 25th anniversa-ry at Dale Rogers Training Center this spring and was honored and

feted by the Board, staff and clients for his many contri-butions to the growth and success of Dale Rogers. When someone has been invested in an agency for 25 years there is never a good time to leave. So as Dale Rogers Training Center gears towards new community programs, learning to sta ff and run Papa Murphy’s and marketing our own products (gift store, frames, trophies), Jerry moves on to share his strengths and talents with OKC Goodwill, a sister UW Agency. Any company would be happy to have Jerry as a part of their administration.

Jerry loved being MC at the monthly staff meetings. He always ended the meetings with trivia about something silly, which always made staff laugh. He will be especially missed by the folks we serve who have known Jerry for a good part of their lives and consider him a friend.

Three percent of the population in Oklahoma are people with disabilities. The goal of all provider agencies is to support these folks to become productive, tax paying citizens. When Dale Rogers Training Center celebrates its 60th Anniversary with Dale Rogers’ son, Dusty and grandson Dustin in October, Jerry’s many contributions will be honored along with so many of those who came before us. HAPPY TRAILS JERRY! From your Dale Rogers Family

Papa Murphy’s New Hires!A huge smile grows on Julie’s face and her eyes light up when she is asked what the best part of her new job at DRTC’s Papa Murphy’s is, “making the dough is my absolute favorite. It’s like a science. I love science and you have to get the dough just right”. Julie was offered a position with DRTC’s new Papa Murphy’s, and this community job is a large transition from the DRTC in-house programs that she has been a part of for six years. She has seemingly found the perfect fit with Papa Murphy’s because of her personality. She truly enjoys interacting with people and doing jobs that challenge her. By working in the DRTC in-house programs, she has gained great experience in every on-campus

business. She has enjoyed packaging DRTC spices and doing the more complicated contracts such as cutting wire at certain lengths for ETI. She is really thriving in her new position with the different tasks that are available. For the past two years, Ethel has also been with DRTC’s in-house programs. Through working at Prism Place, DRTC’s award and trophy business, she learned the difficult task of hand sanding the acrylic. When the opportunity became available for a position at Papa Murphy’s, Ethel jumped at the chance to be a crew member; she has really loved making pizza and working in a fun environment. “I’ve been learning how to wrap pizzas. I’m really trying my best at it. I also really love shaking the sign out-side. I wear my headphones, dance, and of course I sing out there!” Ethel said with an excited laugh. When she is shaking the specials board outside, her favorite musicians to sing and dance along with are Blondie, Lady Gaga and Pink. Ethel also talks about how she loves to be

more hands-on with this job. Making pizzas in the line with her new friends is a favorite of Ethel, as well as cutting, measuring and balling the dough. Both Ethel and Julie have been offered a permanent position with DRTC’s new Papa Murphy’s store due to their outstanding work ethic and success in overcoming obstacles. It’s a match made in pizza heaven. F

Papa Murphy’s Friends & Family night: Papa Murphy’s had a great turnout for the Friends & Family night on April 29th, the evening before the store officially opened to the public. It was great practice for the new Papa Murphy’s employees. The support and feedback was greatly appreciated! F

Rogers Family DRTC is honored to help carry on the legacy of the Roy and Dale Rogers family with the 60th Anniversary celebration in October. The Rogers family will be a big part of the day’s festivities. To culminate the evening, Roy and Dale Rogers’ son, Roy Rogers Jr., and grandson, Dustin Rogers, will also give a special performance for the DRTC folks, their families and staff. F

Robin’s Corner The Rogers family has also generously donated items once owned by Robin Rogers to be exhibited in DRTC’s “Robin’s Corner”, just as it was known in the Roy Rogers Museum in Branson. Robin Rogers was the daughter of Dale and Roy Rogers, born in 1950 with Down syndrome. She is the reason for Dale’s inspira-tional advocacy for people with disabilities. Some of the items to be exhibited are mentioned in Angel Unaware, the book written by Dale to chronicle the short life of her daughter, whom inspired her to be one of the first famous advocates for people with disabilities to not be institutionalized. These items will be unveiled in the museum piece display featured in the DRTC Frame, Award and Gift Shop at our 60th Anniversary on October 13. F

After four years of providing strictly wholesale services, Wyman Frame & Supply will be expanding into retail. Soon you will be able to frame your favorite memories and artwork through the DRTC Frame, Award & Gift Center opening in October at DRTC’s 60th Anniver-sary celebration. Whether it is a diploma, piece of art, or treasured family portrait, a 5-day fast framing menu has been designed to make it easy for customers to pick out a perfect frame at the perfect price. Customers will select their desired price point and then choose from the framing options within that chosen price point. The 5-day fast framing option is easy, efficient and

budget-friendly for the customer. Wyman will also offer custom framing services. Most importantly, the expansion and establishment of the DRTC Frame, Award & Gift Shop will provide additional job opportunities to people with disabilities. To prepare for this Wyman expansion and retail center,

DRTC is currently renovating a 5,000 square foot building open to the public

in October. The DRTC Frame, Award & Gift Shop will showcase and sell framing, acrylic awards, Prairie Spices and other products made or assembled by people with disabilities employed through Dale Rogers Training Center. F
