Higashi Chichibu, the only village of Saitama. Making han d - crafted paper requires much effort. E v e n our skilled craftsperson, when they began their training, they struggled a lot. Despite its difficulties, this traditional art has been maintained for long years. From the conception of W ashi to the present times, Washi has a history of 1 300 years. Passing on these skills from one generation to the next, the know-how of making hand-crafted paper is well kept until now. The one-stop station named H igash i - Chichibu Village of Wash i was formed with a wish to transmit and spread this wonderful culture to the world. In this one-stop station, we have hand-crafted paper products made by this art, handmade soba with fresh vegetables, and delicious local cuisines. We would like to show you our attractive culture and we hope that one of these appeals to you. It is used widely among Japanese people’s lifestyle and culture throughout its long history. Hosokawa-shi has various uses, such as calligraphy paper, engraving paper, shoji ( a sliding paper screen door ) , kakejiku ( hanging scroll ) , umbrella, lantern and accessory pouch. It is known for its durability, lasting for 100 years, making it to be deeply appreciated all over the world. ese days, even several European museums use it for restoring paintings.Our knowledge of Hosokawa-shi and craftmanship are the emblems of Japanese heritage.
