Where to Live?• Many ethnic immigrant groups chose to live together in the

same neighborhood.

Finding a Place.• With all the immigrants coming into America, some people

were looking for ways to make money, so they built tenement buildings to house new arrivals.

The Buildings were very close together and not well made.

What Was it Like?• Because landlords were trying to make as much money as

possible, they tried to squeeze in as many apartments as possible in the tenement buildings. This meant small, cramped living quarters.

Life Could Be Extremely Cramped.

Apartments were very narrow.

Sometimes People Just Wanted a Place to Sleep.

Many Apartments Didn’t Have Windows.• So you needed to be creative to get some outside air.
