Scientist?
There are millions of scientists out there!
Charles Drew Mario Molina Ellen Ochoa George Washington Carver Rebecca Cole Elizabeth Blackwell Rosalind Franklin And many, many more!
Citations
Charles Drew An awesome athlete but decided to become a doctor
Was one of the first doctors to study blood and plasma
Discovered that blood and plasma could be stored safely and opened the first blood bank – also created the ‘Red Cross Blood Bank’
Mario Molina Researched chloroflurocarbons (CFC’s) and discovered that CFC’s damaged our atmosphere – the ozone layer
His research banned CFCs in most countries to help the environment
Won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1995
Ellen Ochoa First Hispanic woman in space – started space missions in 1991 Has spent over 900 hours in space Received many awards of recognition from NASA
George Washington Carver
Born into slavery Received two degrees in
agriculture Revolutionized agriculture
by introducing peanuts and soybeans to southern crops (restored nitrogen and kept soil healthy)
Found over 300 uses for peanuts!
Rebecca Cole
2nd black woman to graduate from medical school Joined Elizabeth Blackwell in helping to teach hygiene and childcare to families in poor neighborhoods
Elizabeth Blackwell
First woman to graduate from medical school in 1849 The students and staff at Geneva Medical College thought she was joking and admitted her as a joke Later founded the London School of Medicine for Women
Rosalind Franklin Became a physical chemist While working at King’s College in England, she discovered the helix shape of DNA Her work was eventually used by Watson and Crick, who were credited with the discovery of DNA – Franklin received no credit
I AM a Scientist! Page 10
When you think about what a Scientist looks like, do you picture an older man with crazy hair, a lab coat, and bubbling beakers? Many people do! But anyone can be a scientist! When you ask questions about the world around you, make observations, look for information, try to figure out how something works, or try to solve a problem, YOU are acting like a SCIENTIST!
Draw a picture of yourself as a scientist! Page 10
• What are you interested in? Cats, dogs, penguins, birds, bugs, sharks, chemistry, outer space, weather, medicine, rockets, dinosaurs, flowers, marine life, rocks, etc…
• Where will you do your work? What will your scenery show? Will it show you in a jungle, desert, forest, lab, the Arctic, underwater, outer space, zoo, classroom, office, etc…?
• What kind of equipment? What tools do you need to do your work?
• What are you wearing? This depends on where you will be working and what you are doing.
