Dear Parent/Carer
March arrived last week with a real blast of
wintry weather which delivered many
challenges for all of us. We tried to keep the
school open, but as the amber alert changed
to red, we knew that we had little option but
to close. Thank you for your support at such
short notice. We make every effort to avoid
closure, but will never compromise the safety
of our students and staff. We have had to
reschedule one or two HCSE examinations as
a consequence, but otherwise we have been
able to return to normal.
I do hope that you have bought your tickets
for our very special school production,
Schools Will Rock You!, which is taking place
in the school hall at 7:00pm on 21st to 23rd
March. Rehearsals are going well, with
students and staff working extremely hard to
ensure that it will be a highly enjoyable and
entertaining evening. I look forward to
seeing you there.
K M Canham Headteacher

In order to help Year 11s during their stressful exam period, we have set up a method for parents/carers to record and send in motivational videos! Simply visit the link to our secure Dropbox and follow the instructions on the step-by-step guide listed below to record and upload your video message. We will then privately email this video to your son/daughter in school so that they receive a little confidence and motivation boost closer to their exams. We hope this will put a smile on their face! For any enquiries, please call the school and ask to speak to Mr Dibble.

Emotional Health & Wellbeing
At Haygrove School we are committed to working with students to improve mental health and well-being.
One of the ways in which we are doing this is to work with SHARE (Schools Health and Resilience Education). SHARE wants to improve the mental health and emotional well-being of our young people in Somerset. We want to change our culture by breaking down the stigma of mental health issues, and by helping our young people become more resilient so they are better equipped to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour. SHARE will help us by involving everyone in schools – teaching professionals, young people and parents, volunteers and support staff - and provide them the tools and resources to help recognise, manage and sustain good mental health and emotional well-being. On the INSET day at the end of last term staff at Haygrove took part in bespoke training sessions, delivered by SHARE, which revolved around mental health and emotion coaching. These sessions will improve our abilities to promote good mental health and increase our knowledge of tools to support those with mental health needs.

LOST PROPERTY We have recently noticed an increase in the amount of lost property. To help minimise this, please ensure students’ personal items, including PE Kits, are labelled with their name so that any lost items can be quickly returned if found.
BOOK OF THE MONTH
The Gender Game by Bella Forrest For fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent comes a story like no other...
Women rule the East. Men rule the West. A toxic river divides 19 year-old Violet's world by gender. Already a prisoner to her own nation, now she has been sentenced to death for her crimes. But one decision could save her life...
Internal Exam Appeals Over the next two months any internally assessed work which counts towards final exam grades will be
marked and students will be informed of those marks before they are submitted to the exam boards. Occasionally a student may not agree with the mark awarded by a teacher. If this disagreement cannot be resolved by discussion with the teacher, then the student may appeal to the Examinations Officer. We have recently uploaded a letter to our website regarding internal appeals. The letter explains the process in more detail and contains advice on how to appeal if a students does not agree with an internally assessed mark which counts towards their GCSE grade.
Your old mobile phone can help raise funds for ICT equipment!
In order to raise money for the Mawanda Basic School in Zambia, we are asking parents and families to donate old mobile phones which we can recycle for cash. The funds raised would be donated to support both Mawanda School and the charity Educate the Kids in Kenya whose children’s choir visited us in 2016 who we are hoping to welcome again later this year. Damaged phones can be accepted and can still produce an income for the charities. All phones must be wiped of data, including any iCloud accounts, Google for Samsung etc (a factory reset is not enough – the information must be unlinked/ deleted). Donations need to be brought in with the completed slip on the letter (available on the school website) into school on or before MONDAY 19th MARCH. Only donations received by this date will be processed on this occasion. Phones and slips should be handed to Mrs Collinge or into Reception.
