Bring Your Own Technology As we make real world connections to prepare our students, I have had a number of students ask, MUST you bring a

device? Answer: The concept of Bring Your Own

technology is supported by our “addressing Equity”. That is,

a student will be disadvantaged if they do not have their own device. The following strategies are in place:

1) Pooled devices to be made available for students who do

not have access to a device. Currently we have a Q block set

and F block set of devices. There are enough devices from donations from our Year 12 leavers to make class sets.

2) DER laptops will be made available to students on a long

term loan basis 3) BYOD recommendations include devices with prices

starting from $169

4) Local suppliers have offered a ‘layby option’.

5) Planning is in place to have a set of higher end spec laptops for photography students in 2014, to facilitate

complex photography software

We believe in safe, responsible young people Being safe, behaving considerately and responsibly, includes when travelling to and from school.

We have a number of outstanding young riders...

Students are not to use skateboards or scooters to travel to and from school. The school cannot take responsibility for

the supervision of students’ skateboards and scooters.

the local shopping centres and carparks for skateboard or scooter riding.

STOP WORK MEETING for teachers

Tuesday 3rd December Members of the NSW Teachers Federation will be

participating in a 2 hour Stop Work meeting from 9-11am, called to discuss the State Government policies on working

conditions, student learning opportunities and the

resourcing of our schools.

The staff at Ulladulla High School will be among those participating in the Stop Work meeting and, therefore, in

consideration of the safety of students, the school will have

minimal supervision. Parents and caregivers of all students are asked to make suitable alternative arrangements for

their children for the 2 hour stop work meeting. The

canteen will be open as usual for recess and lunch.

Normal school will resume at 11am and the following normal bell times will apply: Roll call: 11:05 – 11.25am

The remainder of the day will proceed as normal

starting with period 3 at 11.25am.

Congratulations to Bonnie H and Luke T for their

participation in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition.

At the Branch finals on Wednesday 20th November, Bonnie claimed the public speaking prize and Luke was

declared the overall winner. Luke now progresses to the

next round of this prestigious competition. Bonnie impressed the judges with her humorous speech on the

influence of technology on society and Luke was excellent

as he spoke about organ donation, a personal passion for him.

Are active kids less likely to be bullied? Researchers have found kids who do extracurricular activities

(such as sport or voluntary work) tend to be safer online,

encounter less cyberbullying, and are more resilient to harassment if it occurs. Find out more:

Rai Thistlethwayte Visit

Ulladulla High was recently chosen as one of six schools to pilot a new national in-school music program called Musos

in Residence. This gave 20 UHS music students and Mr

Grace the opportunity to work with award winning

songwriter and musician, Rai Thistlethwayte (best known as front man for Thirsty Merc) and producer-to-the-stars,

Robert Conley (Ricky Martin, Tina Arena, Beyonce, Kiss),

right here in the music rooms at our school!

An initiative of APRA/AMCOS and supported by The Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts

and the Education Department, Musos in Residence is a

hothouse mentoring program about the creative process.

Students heard real-world advice from the industry

professionals about the business and creative side of being a professional musician and then worked in small co-

writing groups to write new music and have it recorded.

‘There are some very talented kids at this school,’ said

Robert, after Day 1. ‘We’ve got 5 great songs emerging very quickly from these groups.”

Following the pilot, which has involved three schools in

Victoria and three in NSW, the program will roll out to 50

schools nationally from early next year.

“The brief was to make a

burger that describes you

and I would like to be a

pastry chef, so I made a

cupcake burger. The bun

was a caramel mudcake

that had green on the

bottom which was coconut

sweetened and coloured.

This was to represent

lettuce. The meat was a

chocolate pancake and

there were two types of

icing, vanilla and

butterscotch/lemon, to represent tomato sauce and mustard.

The meat patty was topped with strawberries to look like

beetroot, the bun was covered with sesame seeds and served

with a side order of chips (which were apple batons).”

Nathan M Y8

A comment from Mrs Murdoch (teacher): This is exceptional

work from such a young and talented student. It is moments

like these that remind me of why I am a Food Technology

teacher. Congratulations Nathan!

Heartfelt Thank You To All

“Dear Teachers, Friends, SRC and Office Ladies Thank you for supporting me after our recent house fire. I am very happy and thankful to everybody who helped me . I

am especially thankful to the SRC who put together a beauti-

ful and wonderful basket of gifts. Thank you so much every-

one…” From Alex J
