Where Does My

Money Go?

Sixty percent of all adoption money goes directly to the scientists who are studying these magnificent mammals and helps fund interns studying these dolphins, boat fuel, and supplies needed for the Marine Sensory and Neurobiology Lab in the Coastal Ecology and Conservation Program at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

Thirty percent of adoption money goes to the Coastal Discovery Museum to fund our educational programs, exhibits, and provide scholarships for needy students.

Ten percent of adoption money goes back to you in the form of mailings, gifts and other materials.

Listening to our Tidal Creeks, Rivers,

and Estuaries

Some of the groundbreaking work being done by USCB right now is all about sound. Sound can be the measure of an estuary’s health. Not only can we hear dolphin vocalizations, but also the sounds made by prey species of fish and sources of noise pollution. Dolphins see underwater by using echolocation, making clicks using the nasal sac or ‘melon’ on the top of their head and listening to the reflected sound return. They can also communicate with each other by whistling through their blowhole! The dolphin’s world is a world of sound, and noise pollution of our waters is an ever increasing problem. Shipping, sonar, recreational boats, and oil and gas exploration all have a major impact on the health of dolphins and other cetaceans.

Are you a local or a visitor?

Just like you, Hilton Head Island has

resident dolphins that stay here year round

(locals) and migrants who are just passing

through (visitors). Migrant dolphins head

north in the spring and south in the fall.

Changes in water temperature tell them

when to move.

Anyone can adopt either a visitor or a local

dolphin! For a full application email

[email protected].

Visitor Adoption $50

Includes: Adoption certificate, monthly

email updates and a better future for

Lowcountry dolphins.

Local Adoption $100

Includes same as above and a t-shirt from

the Adopt-A-Dolphin program.

Specify S M L XL for your shirt.

“I always love to see dolphins off the

coast, but by adopting a dolphin I

learned so much more about these

intelligent animals and how to help

protect them.”

Feeding dolphins trains them to approach boats

and results in boat strike injuries, many of which

are fatal to dolphins. [Chomper, photo 07/08/17 Permit

Threats to Dolphins

Dolphins are sentinel species, telling us not

only about the estuaries where they live, but

also about human health.

Dangers dolphins face include noise and

chemical pollution, boat interactions,

overfishing, emerging diseases, and climate

change. Better understanding these issues

through science will help us protect this

amazing species and our environment.
