She received doctoral degrees from many universities including Amherst, Dartmouth, Notre Dame and Clark University.
In 1980, President Reagan considered Collins for the post of Secretary of Education (but she declined).
She was awarded the prestigious National Humanities Medal from President Bush in 2004.
She has written several books about her teaching style.
