You Are Not Alone
Somer!
In the same way, we are also standing at the beginning of a new
season at YANA, as we are (at last) commencing with our
strategic plan for development that was done three years ago!
Although most of you are aware of the plan, I will sum it up
briefly for the new members:
Die plan sluit twee dinge in:
‘n Nuwe, industriële tipe kombuis waarvoor ons reeds in
“Toestemmingsgebruik” by die Munisipalieit ingehandig.
Omdat daar nou, drie jaar later, steeds oponthoude in
dien. Hierdie werk het reeds ’n aanvang geneem.
The second part of the plan is to move the ladies closer
to the Men’s Houses. This involves buying adjacent
properties and selling the current Ladies House. This will
enable them to make use of the facilities at the Men’s
Houses, improve safety, give them access to more
resources in the community and unite YANA as an
organisation. We have also started this process.
We would like to say a huge welcome to all our new residents, day
visitors and their family members. We invite you to get involved
and support us in continually building a better YANA for all who
are a part there-of.
Last, but not least, a huge thank you to the members of our
Management Committee (and its subcommittees) for all the time
and effort that they contribute towards YANA—it is greatly
appreciated!
Vriendelike Groete,
Estelle Verbeek

Do you belong to the category of ‘human doings’ or ‘human beings’?
“Every day includes much more nonbeing than being….A great
part of every day is not lived consciously (Virginia Woolf). If you are func-
tioning without awareness (being mindless) e.g. entering a room and forget-
ting why you went there or driving home and not remembering what hap-
pened during the journey – you might be functioning on ‘autopilot’. The
importance of not living on autopilot is central to the subject of Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness deliberate-
ly to the present moment in time and experiencing it without judgment or
expectation. It is not about intense concentration or effort. Most little chil-
dren are quite naturally mindful, being absorbed and amazed when flying a
kite or eating ice-cream etc.
Mindfulness is bringing your awareness deliberately to the pre-
sent moment and accepting what you find, as opposed to judging it or want-
ing to change it.
It was first developed by 3 clinical psychologists, Williams, Teas-
dale and Segal to prevent relapse into Depression, after discovering that even
negligible increases in sadness reactivated depressive thinking patterns.
Research showed that Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy significantly
reduced the recurrence of depression in people who had experienced clinical
Depression more than twice; in fact it halved the recurrence of depression.
Results of the study were repeatedly shown.
Negative thoughts are like Velcro and positive thoughts are like Teflon.
Through increased mindfulness training, you can discover that
physical sensations, thoughts and feelings are merely experiences and not
absolute truths. You discover how to take the stand of an observer looking at
your thoughts, without necessarily believing or acting on them. You come to
realise that you aren’t your thoughts. Mindfulness helps you to become
aware of how busy your mind is and how it tends to stick to negative
thoughts.
Fears about the future are partially due to how the human brain
evolved. Our brain is primed to watch out anxiously for potential dangers in
order to ensure survival. The result is humans’ tendency to worry about the
future. Neuropsychologist Rick Hanson calls this feeling ‘an ongoing inter-
nal trickle of unease’ (the little whisper of worry that keeps you scanning
your inner and outer worlds for signs of trouble).
reëlings by YANA.
Die kerkdiens is vir my altyd ‘n besondere geleentheid.
Groetnis soos altyd,
Mike Holtzhausen ( Voorsitter, YANA se Bestuurskomitee)
Mindfulness builds ‘thinking roads’ enabling one to be less fearful of the future
while fully immersing oneself in truly living life. The more you practise, the more
your brain structurally changes and engages this self-soothing system.
Try this simple exercise to experience the sense of relief that comes from focus-
ing on the present moment:
Bring your awareness to this moment: are you aware of any immediate danger
or threats?
If not, you can safely adopt an attitude of ‘right now, in this very moment,
everything is okay’.
Continue to check in with yourself every hour or so and see whether you’re
still okay.
In all likelihood the answer is ‘yes’. So think to yourself: “I’m fine, all is okay
right now’.
Feel into your body; what are you aware of when you soothe yourself in this
way?
You may not have everything you want or desire (who does), but think about
the things you do have and the parts of your body that are well and not in pain.
As an experiment, write down in your diary all the things that are okay, good
or wholesome in this very moment.
To try:
Perform the following activity in a mindful way:
Treat yourself to a shower: feel the water on your skin, its temperature and
sensation.
Smell the soap and really notice it. Bring your awareness to the wonderful gift
of having running hot water available at the turn of a tap.

Pierneefteater
VOLG LATER PER E POS!!
From the Kitchen.......
And the Bus……..
Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program Individual therapy at YANA can be seen as the “cement” used to build the different aspects of the Program into a coherent whole towards each
participant’s optimal functioning. This process is individualized and is a collaborative process with inputs from both the participant and the
therapists on a continuing basis.
Group activities occur daily and are well attended. Our program for 2016 is once again filled with a
variety of groups, namely: Art, Music, Community Outreach, Spirituality, Wellness, Mindfulness, Stress
Management, Occupational Therapy and Therapy Groups. In Therapy Groups we have focussed on
“Who am I” and “How about You”. We have explored the self as well as learned about our views and
how perceptions of others influence our relationships. A new Spirituality Group offers participants the
opportunity to reflect on the deeper things of life.
Regarding Occupational therapy groups, we have identified a new group for this year– the Production Group. Their goal is to produce high
quality items that can be sold at exhibitions and markets to be used as gifts. Please be on the lookout for these items and support us by buying
these lovely products.
Casual Day
PLEASE support us by buying stickers @ R 15 each for you and your colleagues. Ask your office / company NOW to commit to buying their stickers from YANA!!For each ticket that YANA provide or sell ourselves, we earn a percentage of the in-come.
SPYSKAART
Julle laat dit so maklik lyk
Tog weet ons dit is soms ‘n stryd
Al bring Mike vir ons kool
En ons dink dalk dis bietjie goor
Is ons reg om dit weg te toor
Vir disse in die toekoms wat wag
So werk ons almal saam
Vir YANA se goeie naam. Leani
