You and I, And a Selection of Realities

You and I, and a selection of realities Nowadays we’ve got a wide selection of realities to choose from. We have the ”real” world, our everyday humdrum scene. On the other hand, there are virtual worlds like Second Life or World of Warcraft. Augmented reality has landed, and most of the passengers of this first wave are iPhone users. Applications like SnapShop Showroom, Wikitude, or Layar are just a fraction of the current supply. Next fuss will likely be about print media like this video about VTT’s experiments.  That’s a lot more than the Victorian folks had in the 19th century, when they were presented the first artificial reality of the world: the English garden. It was designed to look ”natural”, contrary to prevalent trends. Who is inhabiting these worlds anyway? And where is he/she? In which reality am I participating when I occasionally listen to the lecturer but de facto immerse in the virtual world of Second Life on my computer screen (and left side ear plug)? I’ve heard that this is an issue in the neurosciences. Researchers in that field pose the relevant and topical question where does a world take place. In a space of objects? Or is a ‘world’ an experience: does it happen in one’s mind? Somewhere in-between?
