Students who qualify for the District 115 tuition waiver program are eligible to apply, fees are NOT waived. 

Refunds 

Students must drop the course prior to the end of the business day by the dates listed below. No refund will be issued after designated dates. Transportation refunds follow the same timeline.

Attendance  

Summer School is an intensive and compressed academic experience and it is imperative that students attend class each and  every  day.  Semester‐long  courses  are  taught  in  a  twelve‐day  block  rather  than  the  traditional  eighteen‐week semester.  Because  of  this  time  compression,  attendance  is  extremely  important.  The  following  regulations  will  be enforced:  

A student will be administratively dropped from summer school, without refund, for any combination of tardies and/or absences equal to or greater than 2 days each semester.  

Students arriving to class after the bell will be considered tardy.  Students arriving to class more than 15 minutes late will be required to obtain a pass from Student Support Services. 

 All students dropped from a course for attendance will receive a “WF” as a grade for their summer school course.  Definitions Full day absence: any absence in excess of two hours in a given day Half day absence: arriving to class between 15 minutes and two hours late, either at the beginning of the day or returning from any class break Tardy: arriving to class up to 15 minutes late, either at the beginning of the day or returning from any class break   

Chromebook/Textbook/Issued Materials  Students are responsible for any lost/damaged Chromebook/textbook/issued materials each semester.   

Blended & Online Learning Opportunities  What is Blended Learning? Blended Learning ‐ Blended learning allows flexibility to deliver instruction face‐to‐face and online. In a blended learning course, the instructor decides when and how instruction is delivered. For example, students may be in the classroom one day and the next day complete an assignment or activity on their own time. On days when blended learning is occurring, students are NOT required to be in the classroom and may earn off‐campus privileges. However, students who are not being successful  in the course will need to report to class even when blended learning is occurring in order to receive support from their teacher.   Blended Courses offered in Summer School American Government    Consumer Management  General Health    Creative Writing    

  What is Online Learning? Online learning indicates that the course is delivered in a completely online format.  Apart from an initial face‐to‐face meeting, online courses do not require students to physically attend a class and are able to complete the work on their own time. Students should expect to make time daily to participate in the course.  Online learning offers flexibility for students to be able to complete work at a time and place of their choosing.  If your student is involved in summer sports, works a part time job, is going on vacation, or is even is taking another summer school class, online Consumer Management is a good option.  Below are other items to consider before enrolling: 

Students enrolled in online Consumer Management will be required to attend a face‐to‐face meeting with the teacher at  the start of summer school which will outline  the course, orientate students  to  the developed online class, and review expectations. 

Students will have until the end of the summer school calendar (July 23rd) to complete their online course allowing for additional flexibility and time for course completion. 

Although the course is conducted online, students should still expect to utilize a comparable number of hours they would utilize to complete a regular summer school course. 

Online Consumer Management is the same course that YHS offers during the regular school year.  It follows the district curriculum and will be taught by an employee of YHS who will guide students and support them throughout the course.

Class of 2024 Bridge to College Readiness Program Course Offerings 

Enrollment in these courses are by invitation only based on projected PSAT‐8 scores.  One Week Enrichment Session – Bridge to College Readiness ‐ Enrichment             Credit 0.25 Students who are exceeding expectations in both Math and English/Language Arts (ELA) or exceeding in one and meeting in the other. This program is targeted for students projected towards a highly selective university and geared towards AP, Honors, and the National Merit Scholar pool. This is a one week, 20‐hour program to enhance skills and College & Career planning.  It will include 15 hours of skill development for Math and ELA and 5 hours of College & Career planning.  This will not count towards student’s GPA. 

  

One semester Math Skill Development – Bridge to College Readiness –  Skill Development      Credit 0.5 This program is designed for students exceeding/meeting expectations in ELA and not meeting expectations in Math.  The goal of the program is to assist students  in moving diagonally  into AP, Honors Math, Science, and other STEM related coursework.  This is a three week, 60‐hour program designed to enhance Math skills and College & Career planning. It will include 45 hours of  skill development  in Mathematics and 15 hours of College & Career planning. This will not count towards student’s GPA.   One semester ELA Skill Development – Bridge to College Readiness –   Skill Development        Credit 0.5 This program is designed for students exceeding/meeting expectations in Math and not meeting expectations in ELA.  The goal of the program is to assist students in moving diagonally into AP, Honors Humanities (Social Sciences and ELA). This is a three week, 60‐hour program designed to enhance ELA skills and College & Career planning. It will include 45 hours of skill development in Mathematics and 15 hours of College & Career planning. This will not count towards student’s GPA. 

      

Two semester ELA/Math Skill Development – Bridge to College Readiness – Remediation          Credit 1 Math & English                Students not meeting expectations in both English/Language Arts and Math are required to attend.  Students have been identified as being up to one academic year behind in growth and academic skill. This is a six week, 120‐hour program to enhance Math, ELA, and College & Career planning. It will include 45 hours of skill development in Math, 45 hours of skill development in ELA, and 30 hours of College & Career planning. This will not count towards student’s GPA.

 ART & DESIGN          Credit 0.5        Grade(s): 9‐12 This course is designed to give students a solid foundation in understanding visual art and to improve basic art production skills. Students will explore how they and artists past and present use basic visual symbols of line, space, color, and value to create illusion and meaning in an artwork. Artistic talent is NOT a prerequisite; only a willing and open mind and an industrious nature are needed. This course will focus on art elements, language, and perspective. Students will learn about artistic styles and media while developing their own art skills. Class time will include lecture and studio work in a variety of media with emphasis on drawing.   

PUBLIC ART          Credit 0.5        Grade(s): 9‐12 The class will work in collaboration on a single large public sculpture to be installed on the Yorkville High School grounds.  In addition, students will have opportunity for individual smaller projects of various media including life casting, ceramics, and  glass  casting.   For  the  public  sculpture,  students  will  be  involved  in  design,  presentation  to  administration, construction, and installation.  Join the legacy of students who left a mark here at Yorkville.

CONSUMER MANAGEMENT       Credit: 0.5         Grade(s): 11, 12  This course provides students with the necessary knowledge to be responsible consumers in a free market economy. This course  will  cover  the  following  primary  topics:  career  planning,  money  management,  credit,  consumers’  rights  and responsibilities. Students will be doing a career project, a checking account packet simulation, and other consumer related activities. This course will also be offered as a Blended and/or Online course. Required for graduation.

ENGLISH I           Credit: 1         Grade(s): 9  Prerequisite: None  Successful completion of English I is required for graduation. This is a writing intensive course. Content of course study includes the fundamentals of English as a language: its grammar, usage, and traditional modes of the written language, as well  as  reading  and  analysis  of  various  genres  of  literature,  and  basic  composition  skills  specifically  directed  at  the development of the paragraph and essay.  Next Course: English II    ENGLISH II           Credit: 1         Grade(s): 10  Prerequisite: Successful completion English I  Successful completion of English II is required for graduation. This is a writing intensive course. Content of course study includes  emphasis  in  two  major  areas:  composition  techniques  ‐  the  essay,  report  and  research  writing  ‐  and  the development of formal writing based on the study of major literary texts.  Next Course: English III or English III Honors   ENGLISH III           Credit: 1         Grade(s): 11  Prerequisite: Successful completion of English I and II  One year of required study in English III, AP Language, or AP Literature is required for graduation. This is a reading and writing intensive course. Content of course study is a concentration on the major contributions to literature written by American authors. Selections which span the styles of colonial through modern times will be read and analyzed by means of discussion, written assignments, and a speech.  Next course: English IV, English 101, AP Literature or AP Language 

CREATIVE WRITING        Credit: 0.5        Grade(s): 11, 12 Prerequisite:    None Creative Writing is a semester long course designed to help students explore their writing voices in a creative, engaging environment.  Each unit is designed to introduce and develop different aspects of a writers’ voice.  Students will produce pieces in a number of different forms and genres.  As a class, we will work together as a writing community to support one another through sharing, editing, and discussing.  Students are encouraged to submit their work for consideration in the annual literary festival held in the spring and the school’s literary magazine.  This will only be offered as a blended course.  **Successful completion of one English IV elective option is required for graduation.   

BRITISH LITERATURE          Credit: 0.5         Grade(s): 12  Prerequisite: None  This class includes a cross section of British writers from the beginnings of English history through the days of Shakespeare. The student will be expected to read, to interpret and to write critical analyses of this literature.  **Successful completion of one English IV elective option is required for graduation.    

MODERN LITERATURE (ENGLISH IV)     Credit: 0.5         Grade(s): 12  Prerequisite: Successful completion of English I, II, and III  Concentrating on American literature post WWII‐present, students study authors, the historical contexts for the literature, and the literature itself. Units include the Beat Generation, the Civil Rights Movement, and literature of the Vietnam War. Writing  assignments  focus  primarily  on  literary  analysis  and  help  to  develop  a  strong writing  style  through  sentence revision, quotation integration, and transitioning.  **Successful completion of English IV is required for graduation.

ALGEBRA           Credit: 1         Grade: 9  Prerequisite: Department placement based on teacher recommendation, PSAT math scores  Course content will include topics such as expressions, real numbers, linear equations and inequalities, graphing relations and functions, systems of linear equations, polynomials and factoring, radical and rational expressions, and as time allows, rational equations and other real‐world applications. Some sections of this course will receive extended time during the day to accommodate the mathematical needs of the students. This course is typically the first high school mathematics course.  Next course: Geometry or Geometry Honors   GEOMETRY           Credit: 1         Grade(s): 9, 10  Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I or Algebra I extended time  Course content will include geometrical concepts in both two‐ and three – dimensions as well as analytical and deductive reasoning along with a study of the nature of proofs, lines, planes, angles, triangles, congruencies, geometric inequalities, perpendicularity, and parallelism. Various quadrilaterals, parallel lines and planes, polygonal regions and areas, similarity, and constructions are also studied. Coordinate geometry is introduced as a tool for proving geometric theorems. As time permits some system of finite geometry will be investigated.  Next course: Algebra II or Algebra II Honors 

ALGEBRA II           Credit: 1         Grade(s): 10, 11  Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry or Geometry Honors  Throughout much of the two terms, there will be a review and expansion of various topics covered in Algebra I. Course content will  include  topics  such as  solutions and graphs of:  linear equations,  linear  inequalities,  special  functions and inequalities. Systems of equations and inequalities will be studied in addition to linear programming, and operations with polynomials. Radical expressions, equations and inequalities will be studied before continuing on to complex numbers and the solutions and graphs of quadratic equations and inequalities. The algebra of polynomials will be studied with emphasis on  finding  rational  and  irrational  zeroes  and  the  use  of  the  factor  theorem.  Time  will  be  spent  studying  rational expressions, equations, and inequalities. The idea of functions will be stressed throughout the course. As time permits, logarithms will be introduced.  Next course: Pre‐Calculus

 GENERAL HEALTH        Credit: 0.5         Grade(s): 9, 10  This  is a state‐mandated and required course. A passing grade  is necessary  for graduation. Students will demonstrate 

healthy decision making skills while striving to maintain overall wellness and personal safety. Students will utilize resources 

to increase health literacy and evaluate personal risk factors involved in sustaining a healthy lifestyle. This course will also 

be offered as a blended course. 

 

DRIVER EDUCATION        Credit: 0.5        Grade(s): 10,11,12 

Prerequisite:    15 years old, passing grade in eight courses in two semesters prior to enrolling in the class.    The state law requires that the minimum age for an Illinois driver’s license is eighteen (18) years, except for students who have  their parent’s permission and have  successfully  completed driver education.   Driver’s education  consists of  two phases, classroom and behind the wheel. Driver Education Classroom is a minimum of  (thirty) 30 hours  in  length and requires student attendance to satisfy this state requirement. Any student not completing this requirement will have to repeat this phase of driver education. This class promotes the development of citizens who will  learn and follow state traffic regulations and laws. It also cultivates desirable attitudes towards safe driving habits that are necessary to become safe and responsible users of the highway transportation system.   Driver education is an elective class (parents may elect to have their student wait until their student is emotionally mature and ready for the responsibilities of driving).  The driver’s education course provides a sound foundation of the habits and skills necessary for safe driving. However, a student who successfully completes this course is not an accomplished driver and should be closely supervised for at least one year.   The classroom portion of Driver Education is offered to students during the sophomore year. In order to be eligible for Driver Education the student must be fifteen (15) years of age. Students who desire to take driver’s education courses in public schools or nonpublic schools must receive a passing grade in at least six (6) courses in the previous two (2) terms, or eight (8) courses the previous two (2) semesters before enrolling in driver’s education.    Driver Education Behind‐the‐Wheel is the practice phase that applies classroom ideas and concepts to the driving phase. Habits and skills are developed for residential, city, and highway driving with special emphasis on specific maneuvers.   The course will run for 2 weeks (from June 1 – 4 and June 8 – 11) 8:00 AM – 11:45 AM, this will meet the state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction. It is important to note that you must be in attendance for the duration of the course, missing a day will result in being dropped from the course. An additional 12 hours of course work will take place in a vehicle. There will be more flexibility in scheduling these drives and this will be set on the first day of class.  There will also be an early permit test and a mandatory parent meeting.  Registration for this course is $315.  Students are scheduled to drive during the summer according to student availability. Each student is expected to master the basic mental and visual tasks required for safe driving. When scheduling behind‐the‐wheel, consideration will be given to each student’s age.   

Instruction permits are issued through school and the State of Illinois. The cost of this permit is $20.00 and each student must have a permit  in order to take the behind the wheel phase of driver education. This  fee also covers the price of driver’s license issued through the State of Illinois. The money is sent to the Secretary of State and is non‐refundable. An additional fee is charged by the school district for this course. All students must complete the State requirements for the “graduated driver’s  license program.”  This  includes documenting a parent/adult  riding with  their  student driver  for  a minimum of fifty (50) hours of which at least ten (10) hours must be night driving. The school’s behind‐the‐wheel driving time does not count towards the fifty (50) hour requirement. It is the responsibility of the student and the parent/adult to  complete  the driving  log  form correctly before  turning  it  in  at  the examiner’s  station. More  information on  this  is available in the Illinois Rules of the Road book.

BIOLOGY: FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE     Credit: 1         Grade(s): 9  Prerequisite: none  Biology: Foundations of Life is a survey course covering major topics in life science. This course includes lecture and lab activities on scientific methodology, cells and cell processes,  interacting systems, genetics, evolution and ecology. This class is a prerequisite for all future science courses. College‐bound students and those interested in science‐related fields will use this course as a foundation for future science courses.  Next Course: Phys/Chem, Chemistry, Bio‐Med, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Ecology & Field Biology, Advanced Biology*, Earth Science   CHEMISTRY           Credit: 1               Grade(s): 10, 11, 12  Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I and Biology  Chemistry is the study of matter. The course includes units on science measurement, qualitative and quantitative analysis, atomic structure, properties and behavior of matter, interactions of matter and energy, and equilibrium reactions. Special emphasis is placed on the development of laboratory skills, and stresses the use of logic and algebraic analysis. Students who have struggled in math and/or science are advised to take additional coursework prior to enrolling in Chemistry. The course is intended to prepare students for post‐secondary science education. This must be taken in two consecutive terms.  Next Course: Advanced Biology, Ecology & Field Biology, Earth Science, Physics, Bio‐Med, Human Anatomy & Physiology

WORLD HISTORY         Credit: 1         Grade(s): 9  Prerequisite: None  World History traces the development of man from Mesopotamia to the Introduction of WWI. First semester covers the origin of civilizations in Africa and Asia, the Mediterranean Civilizations of Greece and Rome, and the Americas. Second semester  covers  Western  European  Civilization  from  the  Middle  Ages  through  the  Industrial  Revolution,  with  an introduction to WWI.  Next Course: World Geography & Cultures  

UNITED STATES HISTORY       Credit: 1         Grade(s): 11  Prerequisite: None  Students must pass U.S. History for a graduation requirement.  United States History is a junior level course that is developed study of the major political, social, economic, and military events that have shaped this nation. The course covers material from the exploration/colonial period through the Civil War during one term and will focus on Reconstruction through the Modern Era in the second term. The course does not merely trace these events, but is a study to determine the reason for significance of such events throughout our nation’s history. There is an emphasis on relating these events to our world today.  Next Course: American Government and AP American Government  

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT       Credit: 0.5         Grade(s): 11, 12  Prerequisite: None  American Government will be offered as a junior/senior level course. The course will cover Federal, State, County and 

local government. The course will study government forms, elections, offices, lobbies, functions, and bureaucracy. The 

State of Illinois Constitution is an integral part of this course and is required for graduation. This course includes a study 

of the Federal Constitution which is a study of the individuals who occupy the more important positions in a state and 

federal government such as: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Members of the President's Cabinet, State 

Executive Officers,  Legislators  from  this District,  etc.  An  emphasis will  be  placed upon  the  citizen  involvement  in  the 

government process. All students are required to take and pass this course for graduation. This course will be offered as 

a blended course.
