‘As museums go the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield is pretty special’CLAUDIA WINKLEMAN

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned centre for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and five indoor galleries. In 2014, YSP was named Art Fund Museum of the Year.

This season includes a fresh consideration of Henry Moore, who was born within a few miles of YSP and recognised as one of the

most important artists of the 20th century; an exhibition of British sculpture made in the 1970s and 1980s from the Arts Council Collection; and the première of an immersive audio-visual work by Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson.

Further highlights include the first exhibition in the UK by siblings Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, and visiting artist Anton Burdakov’s exploration of the artist studio as an environment for a good life.

HENRY MOORE: BACK TO A LAND 07.03.15–06.09.15 Underground Gallery and open air

#mooreysp

Offering a fresh perspective on the work of Henry Moore (1898–1986), this major exhibition features more than 120 works that consider the artist’s profound relationship with land. Born into a mining family in Castleford, West Yorkshire, Moore is one of the most important artists of the 20th century and was a founding patron of YSP.

Produced in partnership with The Henry Moore Foundation, the exhibition includes the original drawings that illustrated Jacquetta Hawkes’ seminal book, A Land (1954 edition), and explores Moore’s lifelong curiosity with what lies beneath – from the coalfields and geology of Britain to bones and skeletal structures.

Back to a Land explores the artist’s radical notion of placing sculpture in the landscape. Monumental sculptures, such as Large Two

Forms (1966–69), are displayed in his preferred Country Park setting, against dramatic views and changing skies.

The exhibition includes a rare opportunity to see artefacts from the artist’s studios and family collection, curated by his daughter Mary Moore. Natural objects Moore found that appealed to his sense of form such as pebbles, shells and pieces of wood are shown alongside plaster maquettes and photographs to give fascinating insights into his way of working.

EVENT: MOORE AT MOONLIGHT 31.07.15 / 20.30 / £8 Enjoy a special curator-led tour of Back to a Land followed by an after-hours exploration of sculpture in the open air, illuminated by the light of the full moon and inspired by Moore’s description and drawings of Stonehenge.

MAKING IT: SCULPTURE IN BRITAIN 1977–1986 An Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition 01.04.15–21.06.15 Longside Gallery

@ A_C_Collection

The late 1970s and 1980s witnessed the emergence of a younger generation of artists working in the UK who began to receive international attention for practices which, although incredibly diverse, share a revived interest in the sculpted object, in materials, and in ideas around making.

Making It is the first exhibition to survey this exciting moment in British sculpture. It shows how approaches to object making were reinvigorated by the breakthroughs in conceptual and performance art made by preceding generations and by sculptural and cultural inspirations from beyond these shores.

Drawn primarily from the holdings of the Arts Council Collection and augmented with major loans from important UK public and private collections, Making It represents the work of over 40 artists including Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Cornelia Parker and Alison Wilding among many others.

This substantial exhibition embraces a wide range of sculptural practices, highlighting shared concerns, as well as important differences, between and within established groups.

NICK CROWE AND IAN RAWLINSON: SONG FOR COAL Until 19.04.15 Chapel

#songforcoal

YSP premieres Song for Coal, an immersive

audio-visual work by Nick Crowe and Ian

Rawlinson, to coincide with the end of the

30th anniversary of the UK miners’ strike.

The highly evocative kaleidoscopic work,

installed in the beautiful and contemplative

18th century chapel, explores the physical

and cultural properties of coal with rich

imagery and song.

Song for Coal takes a form based on the

flamboyant tracery of the apocalyptic rose

window of Sainte Chapelle, Paris. Broken

down into 152 separate panels, each section

of the rose hosts individual films that trace coal

from the carboniferous to the post industrial.

The human voice is a central and powerful element in the composition of this work. Working with Opera North, Crowe and Rawlinson have created a plainsong, based on The Coal Catechism (1898) by William Jasper Nicolls, written as a eulogy to coal and the industrial age.

The artists have worked with the collection of the National Coal Mining Museum and Drax Power Station, both within a few miles of YSP, in filming sections of the work.

Crowe and Rawlinson are based in Berlin and Manchester and have worked collaboratively since 1994. Their work is primarily concerned with the languages of power, its grammar and its rhetoric. The artists were selected for the Northern Art Prize in 2009.

LAURA DE SANTILLANA AND ALESSANDRO DIAZ DE SANTILLANA 02.05.15–06.09.15 Chapel

#santillanas

This season, Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana bring their elegant sculptural glass forms to YSP’s 18th century chapel in their first UK exhibition. The Venice-based siblings are descendants of the Venini glassware dynasty, established on the island of Murano in 1921. Though they learned and honed their skills at Venini during their early careers, they have since each developed a practice that breaks with the exacting technical traditions and geographical confines of Murano.

Experimentation, risk-taking and innovation drive the de Santillanas’ work, fed by widespread travel and collaborations with glassmaking experts across the world. Alessandro’s inspiration is water, which translates to the remarkable treatment of the surface in his works, which have a strong, painterly quality. His wall and floor works in the Chapel have a complex, dark black yet mirrored patina, recalling the sense of looking into deep, reflecting pools.

Laura makes slab forms that she refers to as ‘books’. She collapses and bonds together the typical blown cylinder form to make objects that are like envelopes forever sealed by the making process, holding their knowledge within. In the Chapel, the artist shows a library of these forms, to which she returns habitually, in specially made bookshelves.

In association with Le Stanze del Vetro a joint initiative of Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Pentagram Stiftung, Venice. The artists’ work can also be seen in an exhibition at Faggionato Gallery in London from 6 May 2015. Find out more at faggionato.com

ANTON BURDAKOV: ASSEMBLY Spring–Summer 2015 Visiting Artist and Bothy Lab

How do we want to live? Assembly explores this fundamental human question through considering the artist studio as an environment that may fulfill our elusive yearnings and daily needs. Approaching this question as an architectural project, Burdakov – along with a selected community of participants – will develop an evolving sculptural installation within the Bothy Gallery, informed by context and audience.

Resulting in an artist studio that seeks to make aspiration visible, Assembly reflects on how physical and social spaces are created, as we make our way in life guided by ideals and hopes.

Currently based in London and Berlin, Anton Burdakov studied neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London.

URSULA VON RYDINGSVARD 09.05.15–22.11.15 Giardino di Marinaressa, Venice

YSP is delighted to present an open-air display of six sculptures by Ursula von Rydingsvard as a Collateral Event at the prestigious 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia – extending the life and reach of her recent Underground Gallery show. The special light quality and architecture of Venice draw out new nuances in her pieces, made of cedar, resin and bronze, and including the majestic Bronze Bowl with Lace (2014).

A public park just a short walk from Piazza San Marco, the Giardino di Marinaressa has never before been used for exhibition and has been sensitively redesigned by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei, who featured a sculpture by von Rydingsvard in his 2014 gold medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden.

The exhibition has been developed in association with Galerie Lelong and the Municipalità di Venezia, Murano & Burano.

CLARE CHARNLEY: SPRING LAMB PROJECT May–June 2015

Based in the Country Park for five days in May and June 2015, Clare Charnley evolves temporary play structures for lambs, altering and rebuilding them in response to the lambs’ reactions.

Lambs often climb onto their mothers’ backs, or other high objects, and can regularly be seen charging around in small groups, springing into the air, jostling each other or jumping off small mounds, one after the other. The world to them is understood in terms of materiality and social interaction, by pitting the body against material items – in short, through play.

Charnley will be at YSP on 8, 16 & 30 May and 13 & 20 June. Visitors are invited to watch the artist at work and to make suggestions as to the different forms the sculptures could take.
