Yorkshire Geological Society
The Society was founded in 1837, the first of its honorary members being William
Smith, the father of English geology. The objects of the Society are to extend the
knowledge of the science of geology and to promote and record the results of research,
especially that related to the geology of Yorkshire and the neighbouring counties. To
further these aims, meetings are held in various parts of the country for the reading and
discussion of original contributions to the science, and for the delivery of public lectures.
During the summer field meetings are arranged to places of geological interest.
Candidates for admission to the Society must be proposed by two or more members
of the Society. Annual Subscription: ordinary members, one pound; student and
associate members, five shillings. The subscription for Life Membership is one
payment of fifteen pounds, but after fifteen years of ordinary membership the life
subscription is nine guineas. Forms of application for membership and other particulars
will be furnished on application to the Secretary.
The Society's Library is housed in the Brotherton Library of the University of
Leeds and is subject to the regulations of that Library. Members have access to the
whole of the geological section of that Library during normal opening hours. Books
on geology, when available, as well as geological journals of which the Society's library
is mainly composed, may be borrowed on application to the Society's Librarian.
Members should include the estimated cost of postage with their application.
The Proceedings are published periodically as Numbers, each Number consisting of
a single paper. These are subsequently collected and published (usually twice yearly)
as Parts at i£J- each. They are issued free to honorary and ordinary members whose
subscriptions are not in arrear. Members may, if they wish, elect to receive their
copy of the Proceedings in the form of Numbers instead of in Parts. Back numbers of
Parts are available at the prices listed below (exclusive of postage) from Prof.
H. C. Versey, The University, Leeds, 2. When ordering please include a sum
