Guest speakers include

Jane Hamilton is HR Adviser for York CVS, and delivers a HR advice service to VCSE organisations in York and the surrounding area. Jane has nearly 20 years’ experience of delivering HR support within the education and charity sectors across the full range of HR and employment issues. Jane is CIPD qualified and sits on the North Yorkshire Branch committee.

Jo Yeates is Head of Employment Law at Hethertons Solicitors where she advises private and third sector employers. As a Trustee and Honorary Secretary of YACRO,

she has practical experience of the third sector. She is also a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and IOSH.

Michael Millward is Chair of the CIPD North Yorkshire Branch and Chief Executive of Abeceder HR Consultancy. He has worked in both operational and strategic roles for a wide range of organisations. Michael has a particular interest in the value of

volunteering for personal development.

Claire Townson is Deputy Director of People for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, looking after human resources, learning and development and internal

communications. Claire is a senior HR professional with a wealth of experience in both the commercial and charitable sectors.

Mike Patterson is an employment/HR lawyer, who heads up the employment team at Berwins Solicitors. Described by clients as “personable”, “pragmatic” and “very knowledgeable”, Mike provides practical commercial advice to clients on all aspects of employment law and HR. He is also a Board Trustee of Disability Action Yorkshire.

Angela Wall is an independent trainer and consultant working as an experienced mental health first aid instructor and a mental health mentor with a range of

individuals and groups. With a background in business and management, Angela has specialised in management development, recruitment and selection, psychometrics,

management consultancy and coaching and mentoring services.

Sarah Armstrong, Chief Executive of CVS, has over 20 years’ experience developing organisational strength and resilience in complex and challenging environments. Working for 10 years at a senior director level, her expertise covers organisational design, complex change management processes, new business development and income generation. She joins York CVS after being Director of Operations for Healthwatch England based in London.

Peter Monaghan is Area Director for Acas in the North West. He has worked in a variety of roles with Acas, including as a mediator in individual and collective

disputes. Peter and his team are actively involved in helping organisations to increase productivity through the contribution of employees to business effectiveness and

service delivery.

Sue Porter is a freelance consultant in HR and learning and talent development, having spent over 30 years working for a variety of organisations, mostly in the public sector. She is currently an Associate Academic for the York Management School at the

University of York. Sue is a previous Vice Chair of the North Yorkshire CIPD Branch.

Michelle Zal is an External Research Lead at the CIPD, working on a project to develop the organisation’s programme of volunteer recruitment and engagement. She works with organisations to improve their volunteer mangement practices, and to champion a volunteering culture within the HR profession more broadly. She has collaborated on a national research project to look at managing volunteer member networks.
