Thank you to everyone who helped support this event. We are now well into the second term of this school year. In moving forward towards the goals of academic success and student well-being, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher(s) and the school on a regular basis to ensure that expectations regarding “next steps” for your child are put into action, and clearly understood by all involved: students, parents, teachers, and admin- istration. We continue to encourage a proactive approach to productive and collaborative partner- ships. We would like to extend a “thank you” to our parent community for their efforts in supporting safe driving and parking practices during the very busy pick-up and drop-off times at school. It is both hoped for, and encouraged that, with the coming of warmer weather, parents will encour- age their children who are not eligible for bussing, to walk to and from school. This is not only a healthy practice, but also reduces significant traffic congestion around the school. The report is anonymous and the registered owner of the vehicle will be contacted by the YRP in writing. More infor- mation about this initiative can be found at: http://www.richmondhill.ca/subpage.asp? In partnership with York Regional Police, parents should be encouraged to report instances of dangerous driving around the school b) Please follow the rules of the road: Parents and community members are reminded to adhere to safe driving practices and to respect the posted signage on the road (i.e. parking along the road only where permit- ted and never in the staff parking lot; not pull- ing U-turn’s on the road – they are illegal; etc.). Also, please do not drop off in the staff south parking lot as there is no dedicated turn around . We would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing March Break with family and friends. Elizabeth Lue-Kim, Principal Planning for September - Are you moving? If you will be moving out of our area in the next 4 to 6 months, please let the office know of your intentions at your earliest con- venience. We are well under way in planning for September, 2019 and it is critical that we have accurate numbers at all stages of the process. We ask that families assist us with these prepara- tions by informing the office (in writing) if you are moving out of the Charles Howitt P.S. area. Please include the last day of at- tendance and the school your child(ren) will be attending. This will also facilitate in the transfer of your child’s records (OSR). Thank you!

Spring and nice weather make for a great time to get outdoors and connect with math. Whether you

are taking a walk, filling compost bags with leaves or starting to build that garden shed, there are many

opportunities to engage in rich mathematical discussions with your child.

Here are some questions you can pose to your child as you engage with nature:

What shapes do you see in that house?

How tall do you think that tree is?

How far do you think we walked today?

How many piles of leaves do you think will fit into this bag?

How many ____ did you see on our walk?

How many windows do you think are in that building?

How long do you think it will take us to walk one kilometer?

If we double our pace how long do you think it will take us to get home?

So the next time you spend some time outdoors with your child, take some time to engage in some math talk!

To find out what your child will learn in math this year or to find other fun activities that you can do together as a family, please vis-

it http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/Math/Pages/default.aspx. Be sure to also try our Problem of the Month
