Hello everyone, and welcome to the start of a brand-new year

of yoga. You may have noticed that Yoga

South has had a bit of a facelift; the long-time editor, Mike Green, retired from his post in October 2016 and bravely handed me the reins. My deepest thanks go to Mike for his years of hard work, and behind-the-scenes help as I put this first issue together.

So, what does this issue have in store? Inside you’ll find the same fanastic news and updates as you’re used to from the Southern region. We are welcoming two new county reps for South Hampshire; read all about them on page 9, and be sure to say hello next time you meet them at an event.

This year has some exciting developments in store for the region, including our first-ever yoga festival on 18 June (see page 15 for details of how to get involved.)

The regional committee has been hard at work organising an excellent range of IST days for this year; be

sure to check out pages 19-21 for full details.

Finally, there are some changes coming soon for the Southern region. The BWY website is getting a makeover – see page 14 for details of what you need to do to help – and the BWY Central Office is inviting feedback on the future of the printed regional newsletters (p13), so please do make sure you have your say.

Finally, I’d love to hear from Yoga South readers, so please do email me at [email protected] with your feedback – or just to say hello. And don’t forget to ‘like’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/BWYSouth.

Regional officer report

I hope you have all had a fabulous Christmas and a happy new year.

There is a lot to tell you about in this issue; 2017 is going to be a year of change in the BWY.

We are commissioning a new national website which should make it easier for members to book on to events in other regions – see page 14 for more information.

Booking for the national congress will be open soon – this year’s theme is ‘transformation’ and I look forward to meeting any of you that attend. Teacher training week has been reinstated and will this year be at Leicester from 12 July onwards.

As mentioned at our regional AGM, there will be a yoga festival on Sunday 18 June at Aldershot to celebrate international yoga day. This event is free for all BWY members, so put the date in your diary now and see page 15 for more information. This will become an annual event rotating around the counties in the region.

Due to increasing costs and environmental impact, we are canvassing opinion from you as to

what you want to happen about this regional magazine. Please read the article on page 13 and respond in any of the suggested methods to let us know your wishes. We need to hear from you to help us make the right decision.

Finally, can I appeal to all teachers and student teachers in or near Aylesbury: if you are interested in joining a support group of like-minded yogis to meet up and chat over tea or coffee and some cake, please contact Lynn by emailing [email protected]. It doesn’t matter which school or tradition you studied in – everyone is welcome.

Buckinghamshire report

As Bucks county rep I was excited to host the first IST day

for this year – ‘yoga for the healthy lower back’. It was an amazing day with Lesley Isaacson. The day was interactive with practical, theory, observation and a Q&A.

Thank you to Lesley for sharing her knowledge, and to all those who attended. It was super to meet so many like-minded people, all of whom I look forward to seeing again soon.

Looking forward to future IST days, there has been an overwhelming interest in a range of topics including philosophy, chakras, pregnancy, ageing, and anatomy and how it affect poses.

Thank you all for your suggestions and watch this space – or log on to the BWY website – to keep up to date throughout 2017. I hope to have more fantastic IST days lined up for you in May and November.

Berkshire county report

We held our first IST day on Saturday 12 November, when

Fiona Ashdown gave us a whole day on ‘yoga for the menopause’ at the Crescent Resource Centre in Earley in Reading. It was an interesting and informative day; Fiona has a wealth of knowledge gained through 30 years of tutelage with D.K. Desikachar. She told us that he had many techniques for adding little breaks into lessons to keep people interested, yet relaxed and attentive. One of them was asking his students to count their breaths backwards from 60. It is a real challenge for any student – and teacher.

Listening to Fiona, on the other hand, wasn’t a challenge at all. She explained the anatomical differences between male and female pelvises, and how to adapt postures that had been designed by men for the female body. This was put into practice as Fiona progressively taught us many postures that could be incorporated into our lessons. This made the day fun and maintained a good balance between posture work and listening.

Fiona also explained the importance of chanting for the emotions, which we practiced in between postures. This was practiced focusing on certain images to enhance our powers of concentration.

Overall it was a memorable day, with a lovely teacher and group of people, in a great venue. Now we’re hoping to follow on from this success with two more IST days in 2017.

Our next IST is ‘incorporating mindfulness into yoga’ with Christiane Kerr on 11 February. This is very topical at the moment and it will be useful to learn how to make ‘mindfulness’ a more purposeful part of yoga class, to enable, perhaps, our students to take it into their lives.

Secondly, we are organising a ‘bones for life’ IST day with Mary Wyke on 22 April. Interestingly we have heard from someone who has already attended this workshop and rated it very highly. We’re looking forward to both workshops very much. Barbara Ives and Terri Carsey

New reps for South Hants

We are delighted to welcome two new acting county reps

for South Hampshire: Laura Finlay and Liz Steward.

“We are excited at the prospect of arranging our first IST days for 2017, and meeting the South Hampshire members,” said Laura. “Our area has been without a rep for some time, so Liz and I are hoping we can offer members some fantastic opportunities in 2017.”

Laura started practicing yoga while living in New Zealand, and joined the BWY when she returned to the UK. In 2004 she completed her teaching training, began teaching regular classes in her home town, and also completed a yoga for pregnancy module. Laura then moved to Ireland for five years – where she continued to teach yoga – before moving to Hampshire. She started her yoga journey in the Iyengar tradition, and then tried other approaches, including Ashtanga. Laura’s favourite approach is Scaravelli-inspired yoga.

North Hampshire reportThere were two excellent IST days

in north Hampshire in 2017; Billy Doyle’s ‘exploring the energy body and self enquiry’ gave fresh insight and a very practical approach to these major strands of yoga, while a day on mindfulness yoga with Cathy Mae Karelse led us forward in our understanding of this increasingly popular topic.

These will be followed by an IST day on chair yoga with Mary Mackie on 25 March. This day proved very popular and useful when she visited the Oxford area, so I am looking forward to that workshop.

Connaught School will host the region’s first Festival of Yoga next year on 18 June. Read page 15 for more information, and get in touch if you’d like to teach or help out on the day.

On 24 September there will be a first aid day with the ever-popular

Mike Bond; places are filling up fast so book yours online now at bit.ly/FirstAidSept17.

Finally, after over 10 years this will be my last year in this role. It would be wonderful for someone to step forward so we can work together until the October 2017 regional AGM. A pair of volunteers who can work together as a team – as in some of the other counties – would be even better.

Oxfordshire county reportOur series of events continued

in October with a successful day exploring mindfulness and emotional intelligence with Dr Barbara Mariposa. The first aid day in November was fully booked with a waiting list and, at the time of writing, there were only eight places left for the Alexander day in December.

Since taking on the role of joint county reps for Oxfordshire, Anne and I have been very much encouraged by the support and enthusiasm shown by you lovely BWY members for the all the events of 2016.

We are therefore now turning our attention to 2017 and have planned a varied programme of IST days. The year will start with Zoe Knott coming to Oxford in January to take us on a journey towards arm balances. In May Rajesh David will be exploring the subject of yoga and sound, while in July Linda Morley will host an IST day on stress management.

We also have lined up Carolyn Clark for a day on meditation in September, and Swami Krishnapremananda will be discussing chakras in November. We hope that these events will be of interest – see pages 19-21 for more information.

News

Each of our 12 regions produces a newsletter for its members

three or four times a year. We know from many of you how much these are valued. You have told us that you like the helpful news about yoga in your own area provided by your county reps and regional officers.

We want to continue to provide this wealth of local information to our members, in addition to the national Spectrum magazine, but to make this viable, we are proposing that we move to a paperless, online provision. There are several reasons for this: 1. Environmental impact: each newsletter we print has between 24 and 36 A5 pages. We are now producing nearly 9,000, three or four times a year – a huge amount of paper even before we think about the envelopes. And, with our steadily increasing membership, this is set to rise further. 2. Print and post cost: Although the overall quantity of newsletters is large, we do not benefit from economies of scale because we have 12 different publications. This has

always been a significant expense, but the cost has recently increased by nearly 70 per cent because the printer who was kindly donating some of the expense has now sold his business. 3. Access to past issues: members would be able to search for and reread past issues, in a similar way to the online version of Spectrum.

Our data tell us that, of our current 8,900 members, 8,100 have registered online. Of those who have not, only 240 have not supplied us with an email address.

This would seem to indicate that most members would be able to access their regional newsletter online, but we would really want to hear from you if this is not the case.

Please let us know if going paperless would present you with a problem. You can do this: By letter: BWY, 25 Jermyn Street, Sleaford, Lincolnshire NG34 7RU By phone: 01529 303881 By email: [email protected] or [email protected] Or contact your county rep or regional officer.

New BWY website coming The main BWY website will be

redesigned and relaunched early in 2017 to make it easier to use and more relevant to members’ needs.

The new website, which will use the same URL as previously (bwy.org.uk) will feature a space for each region, which members will be able to access through an easy, single sign-on process. After the main website is relaunched, the Southern region website (currently at bwysouth.org.uk) will be incorporated into the central website. It is expected that this transfer will be complete by the end of January 2017.

A web administrator from each region will be able to manage each region’s web content, including information about and booking for regional BWY events, and advertisements for private events. Support will also be in place from BWY Central Office in case of any technical problems.

Event bookings and payments will be possible via PayPal, and

regions will be able to include other payment methods – such as BACS and cheques – if required.

What you need to do nextThe class listings on the regional website will not be accessible once

the new website goes live. Teachers therefore need to start entering their classes onto the main BWY site in preparation for the change. You can do this via the ‘member profile’ section of bwy.org.uk. All class details entered here will be automatically

transferred across to the new website.

If you have any questions about the change, or need additional support, please contact Jacqui Mees (see contact details on page 4).

“BWY Southwill become part of the main BWY website in early 2017”

Help grow our support groups After the recent launch of a

support group for teachers and student teachers in Aylesbury – where like-minded people can gather over coffee, tea and cake to provide help and encouragement for one another – we’re keen for these groups to proliferate across the region.

Growing our network of support groups will give all give all teachers and trainee teachers from all schools

and traditions the opportunity to experience sympathetic understanding, exchange ideas, ask for advice, swap information, share experiences and establish social networks.

If you are interested in hosting or taking part in a support group, contact your county rep or the regional office (see contact details on page 4) and they will do their best to assist you.

First regional Festival of Yoga will be held this summer Our inaugural Festival of

Yoga, to coincide with International Yoga Day, will be held on Sunday 18 June 2017 at Connaught School in Aldershot, Hampshire.

The festival will have a mix of different sessions on offer from a variety of wonderful teachers throughout the day for people to do as much or as little as they like. We also hope to have stalls offering yoga goodies and other products for sale and some therapies on offer.

The event will be free for all BWY members, and we invite you to bring a friend who you feel may benefit from being introduced to yoga.

The Festival of Yoga will become an annual event and will rotate round the region’s counties in turn so that everyone has the opportunity to attend.

If you are interested in taking part, either as a teacher or by offering therapies or goods for sale on the day, please contact the organiser, June Milner (contact details on page 4).

“He encouraged us to put aside the ‘asana rule book’”

Saturday 1 October was a dull, chilly, wet day – so I was pleased

that I had secured a last-minute place at our regional congress and AGM, with Peter Blackaby as our speaker for the day.

In the morning, Peter expertly and eloquently guided us through his holistic approach to the body. He challenged us to consider the body as a multi-layered, interdependent set of relationships, with each and every body carrying it’s own history, garnered from a set of genes and a life lived. We practiced some simple moves focused on inviting the body into the movement, finding the body’s comfort and compliance within a movement, and pausing to consider why it does or it doesn’t comply.

Following a break for lunch, we had the regional AGM, featuring

a swift and upbeat account of new appointments, reports from area representatives and future considerations.

Then it was back to Peter to engage and challenge us mentally and physically through the afternoon. We were encouraged to put aside the ‘asana rule book’ (whatever that might be) and focus on the functional requirements of

our bodies, considering how we have evolved to move and which movements and skills deteriorate through ageing and non-use.

It was a stimulating day, with lots of audience participation, and a great balance of listening and

doing. I felt enthused to take some ideas forward into my classes. Thank you to our wonderful committee for all their ongoing hard work and thank you to Peter for sowing seeds for thought.

“We invited the body into the movement, and focused on finding comfort”

Peter Blackaby challenged both body and mind at this year’s regional congress, writes Michèle Phillips

“Why not hold a world yoga festival? Why not, indeed”

In late July, part of Beale Park nature reserve was

transformed by the erection of several large marquees for the first-ever World Yoga Festival. Enthusiasts from all over Britain, plus a handful from abroad, were already camped there when I arrived.

I was there to meet with the same teachers that I’d studied with in India six months earlier. These included Sri S. Sridharan (pictured second from right, with his faculty, and Michael, right) the senior teacher at the festival and Sri Desikachar’s successor in charge of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) – a man in the same humble yet learned and insightful mould as our late teacher.

Yet, added to the joy of his visit, what struck me was the sheer diversity of yoga to indulge in, from the astonishing Sri Mooji and his dozens of devotees to the astounding gong ‘bath’ I experienced with Sheila

Whittaker. When she said ‘let your body become 3D again’, it really felt like that. This truly was a world of yoga in which one could dip in and out of so many of its schools, practices and aspects, over three very full days. And there was authentic Indian food, too, supplied by Sangeetha – the same chain that I frequent when in India.

All praise must go to Ram Banerjee, his wife Sonali, their amazing team, and their guru, Swami Santatmananda, who was the first to ask ‘why not a yoga festival?’ Next year’s festival will held again at Beale Park, from 7-9 July, and promises to be even bigger. Visit yogafestival.world for details.

“He brought Patanjali’s works to life for modern times”

On Sunday 9 October 2016, Alistair Shearer came back

to Hordle in Hampshire to give us another inspiring IST day, this time looking at ‘The yoga sutras of Patanjali – untangling the text for our times’.

It was his fourth visit to us, and yet again he held us all spellbound and thrilled with his enlightening interpretation of the Sutras. His extensive knowledge of both Sanskrit and the texts themselves really brought Patanjali’s works alive for us.

The day was split into two parts; in the morning, Alistair told us about Patanjali as the author, and the historical setting and purpose of the sutras. The afternoon was entirely dedicated to the yamas and niyamas, and their relevance to modern life.

He explained that the yamas are the ‘laws of life’, whereas the niyamas can be interpreted as the ‘rules for living’

– especially in the present day. Alistair shared so many gems of knowledge that there isn’t space to relate them all. Some key thoughts that I took away included: if we are secure in ourselves, we don’t need anything. Life demands flexibility, otherwise we stop growing and adapting. Also, security is inside us – we are always greater than that which is happening to us. Lastly, the sutras are a manual to serve us over our journey – what more could we want?

Alistair kindly said how well organised we are, and what a super shared lunch we had. This year, Alistair will be our guest once again – I’m organising just one IST for 2017, rather than two days as in previous years – so keep an eye out for that.

Finally, I want to thank all who came and did so much to help, especially my dear helpers who have been so wonderful all these years, without whom these days wouldn’t happen.

“Alistair onceagain had usthrilled and spellbound with his knowledge”
