The Herald-Times Crystal Ball wasn't exactly keen on predicting the outcome of the District 26-3A race in 2012, but it did predict that the Bulldogs would make the play-offs after a two-year drought and go into the fi nal district game with a shot at the league championship.

Thanks to a win over Gid-dings in that fi nal game and a Smithville victory over Gonza-les, the Bulldogs entered the playoffs as District 26-3A's Di-vision II Champion, but lost to Wharton in bi-district, 48-34.

The Crystal Ball predicted the 'Dogs would fi nish the regular season 9-1 a year ago, but they actually finished 6-5. Of those fi ve losses, three were by a combined 11 points, so a play here and there in each of those games and the 'Dogs could have very easily fi nished 9-2.

The Ball also picked Gonza-les and Giddings as the other two playoff representatives, but it turned out being La Grange and Cuero.

Well we've dusted off the Crystal Ball and gave it a good

wax job just this week and here's what it's showing for the 2013 Bulldogs and the rest of District 26-3A:

If Yoakum can fi gure out a way to pull out the close games (which it lost in 2012), then the Ball foresees the Bulldogs putting together an 8-2 regular season campaign, which includes a 4-1 district record.

The Crystal Ball shows Gon-zales winning the district title after missing the playoffs last season and has the Apaches going 9-1 overall and unde-feated at 5-0 in district.

With four teams making the playoffs this season, the Ball picks La Grange and Cuero also making it to the post-season while Giddings and Smithville miss out.

The Ball envisions La

Grange going 7-3 overall and 3-2 in district; Cuero posting a 4-6 overall mark and 2-3 district record; Giddings going 2-8 overall and 1-4 in district; and Smithville going winless on the season.

As far as the playoffs go, the Ball sees a bunch of re-matches in the fi rst round with Yoakum facing Wharton and Cuero meeting Bellville in the Division II match-ups while La Grange will get El Campo in Division I. The other Division I game would pit Gonzales versus Sealy in bi-district.

As was the case last year, the Crystal Ball has once again envisioned the Bulldogs playing into December. The Ball was a little off kilter in 2012, so lets hope the wax job has cleared it up a little and we can go about four rounds.

RETURNING STARTERS for the varsity Bulldog football team in 2013 season are, front row from le to right: 20-Timmy Blakeney, 8-Terrance Hall, 32-Reagan Jacobs and 12-Karl Kaiser; and back row from le : 64-Jacob Linn, 10-TJ Hights, 19-Chase Hermes and 9-Tre’Vontae Hights.

The Yoakum Bulldogs end-ed a two-year playoff drought by making the post-season in 2012, but it was short-lived as Wharton knocked them out in the fi rst round with a 48-34 bi-district victory.

This year, the Bulldogs hope to take it a step further and advance a little farther in the state playoffs.

"Our goal is to win a state championship and help these young men grow into men that will be successful in life. We have the opportunity to have a very good football team with the work that these young men have put into the offseason and summer work-outs," Yoakum Head Football Coach Brent Kornegay said. "We will have to work every-day, because our schedule is loaded with projected playoff teams. This includes our non-district schedule. There is so much parity in the district as was the case last year, where any team can beat any other team on any given Friday night."

Kornegay, who is begin-ning his 5th year as the Bull-dog's head coach and 11th year overall, will have fi ve offensive and four defensive returners from last year's team that went 6-5 overall.

Leading the offensive at-tack for the 'Dogs in 2013

will be the quarterback duo of senior Chase Hermes (6-2, 190) and junior Tre'vontae Hights (6-1, 170).

Hermes completed 78-of-173 passes (45.1%) for 1,456 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 126 yards and three TDs.

Tre Hights, who was in-jured in the fi rst scrimmage last year, played in seven games and managed to rush for 566 yards on 70 carries with eight TDs. He also completed 21-of-46 passes (45.7%) for 369 yards with four TDs and two INTs. His play was so impressive that the district coaches voted him as the Newcomer-of-the-Year last season.

Another offensive weapon that returns for the Bulldogs is senior receiver TJ Hights (6-1, 210), who caught 31 passes for 515 yards and four TDs in 2012.

Senior fullback Terrance Hall (5-11, 270) and senior kicker Reagan Jacobs (5-9, 165) also return on the of-fensive side of the ball.

Hall, who was voted as a fi rst team all-district fullback last year, rushed for 192 yards and one TD while Jacobs, who also tallied 104 yards on 32 carries as a tailback, made 31-of-37 extra points and toed over 3-of-5 fi eld goal attempts.

The four defensive hold-

overs from a year ago include TJ Hights at linebacker, senior Timmy Blakeney (5-9, 150) at free safety, senior Karl Kaiser (5-9, 155) at corner-back, and senior Jacob Linn (6-1, 205) at end.

Blakeney, a 3-year starter who had surgery to his right elbow last month and will likely miss a few non-district games, returns as Yoakum's leading tackler as he record-ed 94 tackles in 2012. He also picked off three passes.

TJ Hights tallied 48 tack-les, two INTs and one sack last season; Kaiser recorded 21 tackles; and Linn posted 38 tackles and 10 quarter-back hurries.

Both TJ Hights and Linn were all-district fi rst team

Lineup will be at 6 p.m.

with the parade starting at 6:30 p.m. A pep rally will fol-low at Bulldog Stadium.

If you or your organization

would like to be a part of this Bulldog tradition, please con-tact Joy Terry at 772-8672 or Nadine Rex at 293-5266.

YHS Homecoming Parade set for Sept. 15

Starting on Page 4B of this preview, there are capsules for each District 26-3A team and on Page 10B, there are capsules on Yoakum's fi ve non-district opponents.

Information on all these teams came from the 4th annual Old Coach Network FNF Magazine and/or Dave Campbell's 2013 Texas Football Maga-zine.

Following is what FNF had to say about Yoakum:

T H E P L AY E R S : Tre’vontae Hights (Jr., ATH), Chase Hermes (Sr., QB), TJ Hights (Sr., WR/LB), Timmy Blakeney (Sr., DB), Jacob Linn (Sr., DE), Reagan Jacobs (Sr., DB/K), DaQuan White (Sr., OL), Miguel Resendiz (Jr., DL)

THE WORD: Finish-ing with a 6-5 record and making its fi rst trip to the playoffs in several years, the Bulldogs will be ath-letic and just experienced enough (5 returning start-

ers on offense and 4 on de-fense) to better last year’s record while challenging for a district 26-3A title.

Yoakum will have two big offensive weapons in Tre’Vontae Hights and TJ Hights. Tre’vontae is a versatile athlete who can be moved around in the slot position whereas TJ is a down fi eld threat from his wide receiver position.

Quarterback Chase Hermes had a standout season in 2012 passing for 1,456 yards and 12 TD’s. There will be some holes to fi ll defensively, however. Linebacker Rea-gan Jacobs, defensive end Miguel Resendiz and tackle Matt Zimmerman will be an excellent foun-dation to build upon.

Despite being one of the state’s smallest 3A schools, Coach Kornegay continues to show why he’s among the top coach-es in all of 3A in leading his Bulldogs to the post-season in a tough district.

Race for District 26-3A title up for grabsFour of the six teams will make the playo s

Bulldog SeniorsDAWNING THE BULLDOG BLUE & WHITE FOR THEIR FINAL SEASON will be this group of 22 seniors, front row from le to right: 60-Sam Patek, 71-Neal Formolo, 61-Robbie Whittley, 55-Clay Morris, 65-Matt Zimmerman, 52-Andrew Villareal and 43-Gilbert Dominguez; middle row from le : 22-Nathan iry, 72-Trysten Muehlstein, 20-Timmy Blakeney, 10-TJ Hights, 32-Reagan Jacobs, 12-Karl Kaiser, 27-Hunter Smith, and 8-Terrance Hall; and back row from le : 68-Jesse Maturino, 64-Jacob Linn, 19-Chase Hermes, 7-Casey Morrow, 82-Jacob Long, 79-Gabriel Garcia and 78-DaQuan White.

The District 26-3A race a season ago went down to the very last game just as most of the league's coaches thought it would and this year shouldn't be any different.

In fact, it may get a little more interesting now that the University Interscholas-tic League voted to allow four teams in each Class 3A district to make the playoffs.

"It will defi nitely be anoth-er interesting year, that's for sure," Yoakum Head Coach Brent Kornegay said. "From top to bottom, every team has as good a chance to make it in as the next one. It's going to be interesting."

Last season, La Grange won the outright District 26-3A championship by going 4-1 while Yoakum and Cuero tied for the runner-up spot with 3-2 marks. But since the Bull-dogs defeated the Gobblers, Yoakum took the top seed in the Division II playoffs.

La Grange entered the playoffs as the Division I representative and fell to El Campo in bi-district, 35-21.

Both Yoakum and Cuero also exited the playoffs in the fi rst round as well as the District 25-3A teams made it a clean sweep of the Dis-trict 26-3A teams. Wharton knocked off Yoakum, 48-34, while Bellville dispatched Cuero, 34-13.

The Bible of Texas high school football, Dave Camp-bell's Texas Football Maga-zine, picks La Grange to win

the District 26-3A champi-onship again in 2013 with Gonzales Cuero and Yoakum fi nishing behind the Leop-ards in that order. Texas Football sees Giddings and Smithville missing out on the post-season this year.

The pre-season offensive MVP for District 26-3A, ac-cording to Texas Football, will be La Grange runningback Rodney Filmore, who rushed for 1,239 yards and nine TDs in 2012. The magazine tabs Gonzales linebacker J.T. Miller as the pre-season de-fensive MVP.

Here's what the Old Coach Friday Night Football maga-zine had to say about each District 26-3A opponent for Yoakum:

• La Grange Leopards •2012 Record: 8-3 3A Div. 1

Bi-District PlayoffsThe Coach: Matt KatesThe Players: Zach Ledwik

(Sr., Ol/DL), Rodney Filmore (Sr., RB), Bralon Hutchinson (Jr., RB/DB), Cassel Tezeno (Sr., WR), Dillon Davis (Sr., QB/DB), Garrison Mueller (Sr., LB) Ty Beseda (Sr., DB), Cody Schindler (Sr., DL)

The Word: With seven re-turning starters back on both sides of the ball from last season’s district champion-ship team, the Leopards are tooled to win another district title. Running back Rodney Filmore led the team in rush-ing with 1,238 yards and 9 TD’s. Dillon Davis will move from the receiver position to quarterback. Davis’ primary target will be WR Cassell Tezeno who hauled in 25 re-

ceptions for 412 yards and 6 TD’s in 2012. A solid offensive line will be anchored by domi-nant tackle Zach Ledwik, and center Cody Schindler. Coach Kates calls Ledwik a”freak” and he’s getting plenty of Di-vision I interest. The Leopard defense could be a good one with the return of linebacker Garrison Mueller who ended 2012 with 64 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks. NT Cody Schindler will solidify the interior defense and safeties Ty Beseda and Dillon Davis can more than handle the back end as the two combined for over 120 tackles last season.

• Gonzales Apaches •2012 Record: 7-3The Coach: Ricky LockThe Players: Zach Perez-

Clack (Sr., OL/DL), JT Miller (Sr., OL/LB), Jordan Johnson (Sr., OL/DL), DJ Gonzales (Sr., RB/LB), Damien Airhart (Sr., OL/LB), tyler Filla (Sr., OL), Darrance James (Jr., WR/DB)

The Word: Led by a solid strong offensive line, solid running game and a smoth-ering defense, the Apaches opened the season with 6-2 only to lose its last two district contests and nar-rowly missing out on a playoff berth. Look for the Apaches offensive line could be even better this season as Zach Perez-Clack, JT Miller, Jordan Johnson, Damien Airhart, and Tyler Filla all return this season. Fullback DJ Gonzales is a versatile back who can block and is an effective run-ner. Gonzales however will go as its defense goes ass this is the strength of the team. The

defensive line with Clack and Johnson will be very good in the middle and that line will be complimented by linebackers DJ Gonzales and Damien Airhart. This unit will make up what could be one of the best defenses in Region 4.

• Cuero Gobblers •2012 Record: 5-6 3A Div. II

Bi-District PlayoffsThe Coach: Travis ReeveThe Players: Hunter Fales

(Sr., QB/DB), Tel Holland (Sr., OL), Darren Martin (Sr., OL), Layne Balfanz (Sr., LB), Pear-son Reese (Sr., K), Brendan Pupi (Sr., K), D’Anthony Hop-kins (Jr., RB), Colby Ebrom (Jr., DL), D’Andre Gallagher (Jr., WR), Triston Barefi eld (Jr., DB), Reid Schiffbauer (Jr., DB), Cole Liendo (Sr., WR)

The Word: After a three year playoff drought, the Gob-blers were able to right the ship and earn a playoff spot

in 2012. Much of this success was achieved behind the run-ning of D’Anthony Hopkins (6’3, 215) who fi nished the season with 836 yds. on 120 carries. Coach Reeve says “Hopkins is a special player at running back and is a big play threat.” Quarterback Hunter Fales will have a solid offensive line in front of him with Tel Holland (6’0”, 220) and Darren Martin 6’0”, 230) leading the charge up front. Hopkins is also a very solid linebacker who can cover a lot of ground quickly. He will be joined on the defensive side of the ball by lineman Colby Ebrom (6’2”, 210) who accounted for 50 tackles in 2012. If the Gobblers stay healthy they could compete for a district title and a lengthy playoff run.

• Giddings Buffaloes •2012 Record: 6-4The Coach: Chris Jones

The Players: Deondre Jack-son (Sr., RB/DB), Devonte Jordan (Sr., WR/D), Raylon Hickey (Jr., WR/DB), Stephen Petzold (Sr., LB, Jared Proske (Sr., OL/DL), Ethan Allen (Sr., OL/DL), Issac Morales (Sr., OL/LB), Tyler Jones (Sr., QB/P), Kyle Jones (So., QB/DB), Justin Herzog (Sr., RB/DB)

The Word: The Buffaloes started the 2012 season with a 6-0 record and a few of those win were against some of the best programs in the state. The start was so impressive in fact that Giddings showed up in most state polls as a top 5 team by the time district play started. Two games in to the district schedule is when the wheels seemed to fall off as Giddings went 0-4 in their last four games. Graduation has hit the 2013 team hard and there will be many holes

e top four teams in District26-3A will earn playo berths

and of those four, the two schools with the largest enrollments

would go Division I while the other two would go Division II. Here are the enrollment gures

for the six District 26-3A teams:

1. Gonzales, 7042. Giddings, 6563. La Grange, 6094. Cuero, 5755. Smithville, 5286. Yoakum, 477

Football TrainersTAKING CARE OF THE ATHLETES during the 2013-14 sports season will be trainers, kneeling from le to right: Nicole Berkovsky, Kacie Gibbons, Destiny Alvarado and Brianna Villareal; and standing from le : Kaylynn Garza, Joslynn Ornales, Julie Tesch, Megan Moorman, KC Rex and Coach Carrie Koliba-Frank. Not pictured is Megan Hanson.

to fi ll on both sides of the ball. Running back Deondre Jack-son will be asked to fi ll the very large shoes of departed running back Joseph Glenn. A major question will be at quarterback as 2012 quarter-back Adam Dock was lost to graduation as well. Look for senior Tyler Jones and Sopho-more Kyle Jones to compete for that spot. The defense will be led by 1st Team All-District linebacker Stephen Petzold however much of the defense will be very young.

• Smithville Tigers •2012 Record: 5-5The Coach: Wayne ChildsThe Players: Khalil Mc-

Cathern (Sr., DB), Brandon Easliey (Sr., OL), Riley Hel-mecamp (Jr., DL), Reed Za-palac (Sr., LB), Jake Dawson (Jr., RB), Jamal Bates (Sr., RB), Kyle Reynolds (Sr., OL)

The Word: Coach Childs says of his Tigers “We will be very young this coming year. We do not return the starters that we have for the past few years.” What Coach Childs speaks of has propelled Smithville to some of its most successful seasons in the pro-grams history. The rebuilding will start in the trenches as offensive linemen Kyle Reyn-olds (6’2, 250) and Brandon Easley (6’3”, 225), could be an excellent foundation to build upon. Running backs Jake Dawson (5’10, 225) and Jamal Bates (5’8, 175) will run behind the rebuilt line. The defense will be equally as young but linebacker Ree

Zapalac recorded 32 tackles last season and defensive lineman Riley Helmecamp (6’2, 235) was promising last season as a sophomore. Look for a young Smithville squad to struggle some in Coach Child’s second season, but the foundation is a place for the Tigers to be good in the years to come.

selections in 2012."I believe our strengths

this season will be the abun-dance of skill kids and hav-ing two proven quarterbacks and having the knowledge of both the offensive and de-fensive system that we have in place," Coach Kornegay said. "And if I had to pick out a weakness, I would have to say it would be our youth on both sides of the ball."

According to Coach Ko-

rnegay, this year's offense will run out of multiple sets and the team will run a bunch of option, counter read, zone read and pass players during the course of a game. On de-fense, the team will base out of a 50 with multiple schemes.

"We're going to try and pick up the pace a little on offense this year and not use much play clock when trying to get a snap off," Kornegay explained. "Our kids have

worked hard to get in shape and we need to use that to our advantage. It's going to be a fun season."

The battle for starting po-sitions was still up for grabs heading into last Friday night's scrimmage, but Coach Kornegay did report which players were vying for each position, so here's a break-down by those positions:

2012 SEASON IN REVIEWLast season, the Bulldogs

went 3-2 in non-district, beating Columbus (27-25) and Sinton (34-20) to begin the season before falling to Hallettsville (20-18) in the third game. After defeating Edna (20-14) in the fourth week, Yoakum fell to Rice Consolidated (21-13) in the fi nal non-district game.

Thanks to a 38-yard fi eld goal by Reagan Jacobs in the fi nal two minutes, the Bull-dogs were able to pull out a 27-24 win over Smithville in the District 26-3A opener last season and then carried that momentum over to Cu-ero as the Bulldogs defeated the Gobblers, 28-21, which marked the second straight victory over the rival Turkeys.

Yoakum then stumbled in its next two district games, falling to Gonzales (48-20) and La Grange (28-27), to set up a must-win in the season fi nale against Giddings. Plus, Yoakum needed either Cuero to beat La Grange in the dis-trict fi nale or get Smithville to upset Gonzales.

Well Yoakum took care of business, defeating the Buf-faloes (35-14), but La Grange knocked off the Gobblers. Things didn't look too good for the Bulldogs, but when it was announced that the Tigers beat the Apaches, the celebration began at Bulldog Stadium as Yoakum had clinched a playoff berth.

NOTE: The Bulldogs will open the 2013 season at home against Columbus with kick-off at Bulldog Stadium slated for 7:30 p.m.

Yoakum's only state football appearance came in 1952

Though making it to the UIL Class 3A state football play-offs 22 times in its history, Yoakum has only been to the state championship game one time, losing to Terrell in the 1952 title game, 61-13. That was 61 years ago.

The Terrell Tigers capped off a perfect 15-0 season in win-ning its fi rst-ever state football championship that season.

The 61 points scored by Terrell is still a Class 3A record for most points scored by team in a championship game. The Tigers' kicker, Henry Norton, also ranks 2nd with seven extra point kicks in a Class 3A state championship game.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William George Morgan at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian As-sociation) in Holyoke, Mass. where he served as Director of Physical Education.

He wanted to create teams without physical con-tact with the players. In the beginning, the teams played with a kind of basketball named as Mintonette. Today it is known as volleyball.

They decided to combine basketball, baseball, hand-ball and tennis the to get the sport of volleyball.

The Lady Bulldogs had to settle for runner-up in the District 26-3A race last sea-son and then were knocked out in the fi rst round of the playoffs by Sealy, so the 2013 edition of the Lady 'Dogs have unfi nished business and will do what they have to do to try and win a district cham-pionship and play a little long come post-season time.

"I am extremely excited about this season because the group chemistry is probably one of the best I have been privileged to be a part of," Head Coach Alisha Boysen said. "Watching them play in summer league was abso-lutely fun to watch."

Coach Boysen, who is be-ginning her second season as head coach, returns seven players from last year's team that went 23-14 overall and 7-3 in district.

Seniors Jaccarri Hights, Callie Witte and Shelby Pesek each played in over 100 games last season along with juniors Faith Hagan and Latrice Brown.

Hights, a middle blocker, tallied 189 points, 101 blocks, 99 kills, 73 digs, 23 assists and 13 aces in 2012.

Witte, a setter and outside hitter, posted 807 assists, 304 disg, 215 points, 72 kills, 48 aces and 31 blocks a year ago.

In 2012, Pesek, a libero, recorded 251 digs, 11 assists, 9 aces and 3 kills.

Hagan, a setter and out-side hitter, tallied 208 digs, 82 assists, 21 kills, 19 aces and 8 blocks a year ago.

Brown, and outside hitter, recorded 268 kills, 220 digs, 41 blocks, 14 aces and 12 as-sists in 2012.

Senior Reagan Renken and junior Celine Markert, both outside hitters, also saw a little time on the court last season. In 18 games, Renken posted 15 kills, 5 digs, 2 aces and a block while Markert, in 41 games, chalked up 25 assists, 22 digs, 17 blocks and 15 kills.

Other varsity players this season will include seniors Ashley Carroll, Haley Lorke and Rachel Murdock along with juniors Sheyanne Chum-chal and Lexi DeBord.

Witte was named the dis-trict's co-MVP setter last season while Brown was voted on as an all-district fi rst teamer. Hights made the second team.

La Grange, which won the league title last year and made it all the way to the state finals before falling to Abilene-Wylie in a tough 5-game match, is once again favored to win the District 26-3A jewels.

The Lady Leps return senior Lexus Davis, who was the league's Offensive MVP in 2012.

"As for our district, it is going to be tough as it usually is, but I believe that we can make the playoffs and pos-sibly take a step further into the playoffs," Coach Boysen added. "The girls are hungry for it and working hard."

Columbus CardinalsCoach: Tony Valastro. Lettermen R/L:

21/19. Starters returning O/D: 7/7. 2012: 3-7/2-4 district.

Players to watch: QB Tyson Simcik (5-10, 175, 4.7), RB Royce Caldwell (5-6, 155, 4.4), DE Mason Denley (6-5, 255, 4.8), SS Derek Hayes (6-0, 180, 4.5), WR Kameron Page (6-0, 170, 4.6), DE Caelan Neuendorff (6-2, 190, 4.7), Top juniors: FS Eugene Shorter (5-9, 160, 4.5), OLB Blake Pfl ughaup (6-0, 175, 4.7), Top sophomore: OL/LB Jordan Hayes (6-0, 230, 4.9).

Other prospects: RB Detrilow Carter, WR/DB logan Denley, LB/DS Matthew Quintero, DT Travis Neumann, DT Andrew Ray, DT Christian Juarez.

2013 notes. New coach Valastro, in from Galveston Ball, will look to QB Simcik (2,924, 33 TEDs passing, 202, 3 TDs rushing) to help turn around the Cardinals’ fortunes in 2013. WR Page (26-477, 5 TD’s receiving) in his top returning target. Defensively, SS Hayes (103 tackles), DE Mason Denley (54 tackles, sack), DE Neuendorff (29 tackles, 2 sacks), FS Shorter (23 tackles) and OLB Pfl ughaup (43 tackles, 5 TFL, 4.5 sacks) put up plenty of numbers.

Last Year: Yoakum 27, Columbus 25

Sinton PiratesCoach: Tom Allen. Lettermen R/L: 23/21.

Starters returning O/D: 5/7. 2012: 9-3 DII area fi nalist/ 4-1 district.

Players to watch: RB John Guzman (5-10, 215, 4.6), WR Nick Zepeda (5-8, 165, 4.6), WR/LB Tracker Conn (5-8, 170, 4.8). Top juniors: QB Tyler Handson, DE Mike Huerta. Top sophomore: RB Colton Cohea.

Other prospects: OT Jacob Brown, DE Jarrett Janak, DT Homer Sepeda, WR C.J. Zepeda.

2013 notes: Allen will build around QB Handson (1,877, 23 TD’s passing; 1,502, 19 TDs rushing), the district’s Offensive POY. RB Guzman (552, 5 TDs rushing) begins a fourth year as a starter and also plays DE. WR Conn (64 tackles) moved to LB for the last six games.

Last Year: Yoakum 34, Sinton 20

Hallettsville BrahmasCoach: Tommy Psencik. Lettermen R/L:

24/11. Starters returning O/D; 7/8. 2012: 12-1 regional fi nalist/5-0 district. Key losses: Quinton Wright, Teidrick Smith, Troy Mur-phy, Carson Schindler, Will Wallace, Ryan Hoffman.

Players to watch: DB Dalton Herrington (6-3, 190, 4.6), LB Justin Reeves (5-10, 190, 4.6), WR Tim Sheppard (5-11, 185, 4.5). Top juniors: WR Jimario Grounds (6-3, 185, 4.6), QB Nate Kowalik (5-11, 220, 4.6).

Other prospects: WR Trenton McGee, LB Dyllan Kerr, OLB Reid Leopold, DL Tyler Steffek, OL Kyle Leopold, DL Elondre McAfee.

2013 notes: Coach Psencik led the Brahmas to their fi rst 10-0 regular season since 1979, their fi rst district champion-ship since 1991, and their fi rst outright district title since 1979. But Psencik said the Brahmas are far from satisfi ed after los-ing to state champion Cameron Yoe in the quarterfi nals. The defense will be led by DB Herrington, who also was among the district leaders in receiving, and LB Reeves, who Psencik sad is a consistent tackler. QB Kowalik started until suffering a son-ending injury in the second game; now he will throw to WRs Sheppard, Grounds and McGee. Hardt, who played on the varsity as a freshman, takes over at RB. Rarely do teams have such a breakout year and bring back the majority of the team the follwing season; this is truly a rare opportunity for the Brahmas to put themselves fi rmly on the statewide map.

Last Year: Hallettsville 20, Yoakum 18

Edna CowboysCoach: Mike Pierce. Lettermen R/L:

14/24. Starters returning O/D: 2/7. 2012: 7-4 bi-district fi nalists/4-1 district. Key loss: DeRodrick Jones.

Players to watch: OL Anthony Norman (6-3, 267, 5.2), LB David John Kallus (6-0, 196, 4.9), DE Guy Dodson (6-2, 248, 4.9). Top juniors: DE Dar-nelius Norman (6-1, 208, 4.8), DB Billy Ganem (5-7, 165, 4.6). Top sophomore: OL Dylan Kallus (6-0, 258, 5.4).

Other prospects: QB Austin Kelley, FS DeOntae Jones, DT Nathan Whitley, LB Timiron Williams.

2013 notes: Coach Pierce said the Cowboys will have a diffi -cult time making up for the loss of 24 seniors, but many of their district competitors must also replace strong senior classes.

The majority of returnees for the Cowboys are on defence and will be led by LB Kallus (133 tackles), who Pierce said is a smart player who is always around the ball, and Dodson (46 tackles, 6 sacks), who Pierce said is a dominating DE. Ganem (INT) and Jones 5 INTs, TD) are back in the secondary, and DE Darnelius Norman (41 tackles) returns. Pierce said the offense will fi ll holes behind OL Anthony Norman (38 pancakes), who is a punishing blocker. The defense will need to lead the way for the Cowboys while the offence gets its feet underneath it, but the talent is there to make the kind of deep run to which Edna has become so accustomed.

Last year: Yoakum 21, Edna 14

Rice Consolidated RaidersCoach: Gary Zeinert. Lettermen: R/L:

15/12. Starters returning O/D 4.5. 2012: 4-6/2-3 district.

Players to watch: QB Jordan Johnnson, DB Todd Nicholas. Top Sophomore: LB Greg Roy.

Other prospects: OL Dylan Ferguson, OL Ron McGrew, OL Bobby Alonso, LB Luther Cole, WR Jaquad McGrew.

2013 notes: Coach Zeinert moves from offensive coordinator to head coach and said strong team leadership will give the Raiders an opportunity to end a two-year playoff drought. The offense should run smoothly under the director of QB Johnson (76-159-1, 040-8, 8 TDs passing; 182-806. 11TDs rushing), who became a starter as a freshman. Johnson will be protected by returning starters Ferguson. Ron McGrew and Alonso on the line. WR Jaquad McGrew (2 INTs) will play WR and also start on the secondary, where he will team up with DB Nicholas, the district’s Newcomer of the Year. Nicholas should also see action on offense. LB Cole (68 tackles) should anchor the de-fense and will get help at the position from Roy, a sophomore. In such a top-heavy district, it’s unlikely that the Raiders can challenge for the district crown, but a postseason berth and a deep playoff run is most certainly in play.

State UIL changes all about the numbersThe UIL’s biennial reclassifi cation

and realignment has always been and will always be about the numbers.

But what’s in the numbers is headed for a change when the UIL releases the classifi cations and districts for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years on Feb. 3.

A new Class 6A will be created, but it won’t be a conference of schools with large enrollments as many had thought.

The UIL will simply raise the number of each classifi cation, meaning six-man will become Class 1A, Class 1A will become 2A, 2A will become 3A, 3A will become 4A, 4A will become 5A, and 5A will become 6A.

“I don’t think you’ll see a whole lot of change in the numbers at the top,” said Jamey Harrison, the UIL’s deputy director, at the organization’s annual Texas High School Coaches Association’s coaching school news conference. “But I think you’ll see a lot more competitive equity for our smaller schools.”

Harrison said the cutoff would be raised from an average daily attendance of 99.9 to 104.9 for Class 1A (formerly six man) in the upcoming reclassifi cation.

Harrison didn’t go into specifi cs about cutoffs for the other classifi cations but did point out that Class 4A (formerly 3A) would be split into two divisions and have 16 districts instead of 32 like the current Class 1A and 2A.

Harrison and UIL Director Charles Breithaupt admitted splitting Class 4A would create more travel. But Harrison said coaches have told him they are more interested in “equity than travel.”

Teams in the current Class 3A and 2A will see the number of playoff teams increase from three to four in the upcom-ing season.

As a result, the Class 3A, Division I state championship game will be played on the same week as the Class 1A, 2A, 3A Division II, 4A and 5A championship games.

Cousins said the UIL is looking into the schedule for the games. He said the venue for this season’s championship games has not been set but gave a strong indication the games would return to AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

“Our schools as well as members of the UIL, the public and the coaches asso-ciation have been very pleased with the venue for state championship games,” Cousins said.

Cousins spoke briefl y about safety is-sues and said while the UIL is concerned about sudden cardiac arrest it has no plans to make cardiac screening man-datory to participate in extracurricular activities.

Harrison said the UIL’s state volley-ball tournament is likely to return to the Metroplex after being held in Garland

last season.Harrison also said the state wrestling

tournament, which was held at two loca-tions in Austin last season, will likely move.

The boys state basketball tournament will return to the Erwin Center in Austin this season. But Harrison and Breithaupt said unless more hotel rooms become available because of the confl ict with South by Southwest, the tournament will have to move.

NOTES• Cousins said the UIL will adopt the

NCAA’s “targeting rule” for tackling. But the UIL will not extend penalties for players ejected into the next game.

• Harrison said the UIL will go through a Sunset review by the state Leg-islature. Harrison said the UIL welcomes the review but will spend approximately $200,000 to prepare for the process.

• Breithaupt said the UIL is looking into football coaches involvement with offseason activities, such as seven-on-seven but has yet to make any rule changes.

• Harrison said the UIL still forbids televising regular-season games Friday nights, but will allow bi-district, area and regional playoff games to be televised. Fox Sports Southwest owns the rights to quarterfi nal, semifi nal and champion-ship games.

YHS Lady Bulldog harriers should be in the mix in 2013

Michael S. McCrackenManaging Editor

The Yoakum Lady Bulldog varsity cross country team has always been a force to be reckoned under the direc-tion of Coach Bobby Vick, but when the team only managed to place 3rd at the District 26-3A last season, it left a bad taste in his mouth as well as his runners.

"We're not happy unless we're on top and this group of girls has what it takes to get back up there," Coach Vick said. "They've decided that they really want to do this and put in the work that needs to be done, so watch out."

Giddings won the girls district cross country title in 2012 with 35 points, Smith-ville was runner-up with 51 points and Yoakum settled for 3rd with 59 points.

With the 3rd place fi nish at district, the Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Class 3A, Region IV Meet, but only managed to place 21st with 527 points.

"It was nice getting to re-gional and running, but Yoa-kum has always been in the top half of all the teams there and it just didn't work out last year," Coach Vick added. "We're on a mission this year

and I like what I see."Returning harriers from

last year's team are seniors Olga Renteria and Emily June Kelley along with junior Hanna Bordovsky and sopho-more Kaitlyn Anzualda.

Bordovsky was the leading runner for the Lady 'Dogs in 2012, placing 6th at district and 59th at regional.

Other seniors joining the squad this season will be Paige Alonzo, Ana Cabello and Brittany Rosas, who sat out last season for personal reasons.

Newcomers who will be pushing those seniors and returnees this season will be underclassmen Jessica Hernandez, Rebecca Leist, Kourtney Jeter, Amber No-vosad and Stephanie Rosas.

Coach Vick said it.... "Our schedule this year will prob-ably be a very fl exible one. We will know our district, as well as our region, very well. District 26-3A, like all other sports, will be a tight one. Just good athletes across the board. The past few years on the girls' side, we have had many issues. Pretty much if it were possible, then it happened to us. This year's team has hung together through thick and thin and want a championship. They

Early fall football, cross country, soccer and field hockey practices are con-ducted in very hot and hu-mid weather in many parts of the United States. Due to the equipment and uniform needed in football, most of the heat problems have been associated with football. Dur-ing the 1995 through the 2000 football season there have been 17 heat stroke deaths in football. This is not accept-able. There are no excuses for heatstroke deaths if the proper precautions are taken. During hot weather condi-tons, the athlete is subject to the following:

Heat Cramps - Painful cramps involving abdominal muscles and extremities caused by intense, prolonged exercise in the heat and depletion of salt and water due to sweating.

Heat Syncope - Weakness, fatigue and fainting due to loss of salt and water in sweat and exercise in the heat. Pre-disposes to heatstroke.

Heat Exhaustion (Water Depletion) - Excessive weight loss, reduced sweating, el-evated skin and core body temperature, excessive thirst, weakness, headache and sometimes unconciousness.

Heat Exhaustion (Salt Depletion) - Exhaustion, nau-sea, vomiting, muscle cramps, and dizziness due to profuse sweating and inadquate re-placement of body salts.

Heatstroke - An acute medical emergency related to thermoregulatory failure. Associated with nausea, seizures, disorientation, and possible unconciousness or coma. It may occur suddenly without being preceded by any other clinical signs. The individual is usually uncon-scious with a high body tem-perature and a hot dry skin (heatstroke victims, contrary to popular belief, may sweat profusely).

It is believed that the above mentioned heat stress problems can be controlled provided certain precau-tions are taken. According

to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Sports Medicine, heat related illnesses are all preventable. (Sports Medicine: Health Care for Young Athletes, American Academy of Pedi-atrics, 1991). The following practices and precautions are recommended:

Each athlete must have a physical exam with a medical history when fi rst entering a program and an annual health history update. His-tory of previous heat illness and type of training activities before organized practice be-gins should be included. State high school association’s recommendations should be followed.

It is clear that top physi-cal performance can only be achieved by an athlete who is in top physical condition. Lack of physical fi tness im-pairs the performance of an athlete who participates in high temperatures. Coaches should know the physical condition of their atheltes and set practice schedules accordingly.

Along with physical condi-tioning, the factor of acclima-tization to heat is important. Acclimatization is the process of becoming adjusted to heat and it is essential to provide for gradual acclimatization to hot weather. It is necessary for an athlete to exercise in the heat if he/she is to become acclimatized to it. It is suggested that a gradu-ated physical conditioning program be used and that 80 percent acclimatization can be expected to occur after the fi rst seven to ten days. Final stages of acclimatization to heat are marked by increased sweating and reduced salt concentration in the sweat.

The old idea that water should be withheld from athletes during workouts has no scientifi c foundation. The most important safeguard to the health of the athlete is the replacement of water. Water must be on the fi eld and readily available to the athletes at all times. It is rec-

Heat stress and athletic participationommended that a minimum of ten minutes be scheduled for a water break every half hour of heavy exercise in the heat. Water should be avail-able in unlimited quantities. Check and be sure athletes are drinking the water. Cold water is preferable. Drinking ample water before practice or games has also been found to aid performance in the heat.

Salt should be replaced daily. Modest salting of foods after practice or games will accomplish this purpose. Salt tablets are not recommended. Attention must be directed to replacing water - fl uid re-placement is essential.

Know both the tempera-ture and humidity. The great-er the humidity, the more diffi cult it is for the body to cool itself. Test the air prior to practice or game using a wet bulb, globe, temperature index (WBGT Index) which is based on the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity, radiant heat and air movement.

The following precautions are recommended when us-ing the WBGT Index (ACSM’s Guidelines for the Team Physician, 1991): Below 64 - Unlimited activity; 65-72 Moderate risk; 74-82 High risk; 82 plus - Very high risk.

Football was invented around 1876 by a man by the name of Walter Camp. He got the idea from William Ebb Ellis who was playing a game of soccer when he picked up the ball and started to run with it, therefore break-ing the rules and giving Camp the idea for the game.

Rugby (started in England, 1823) was introduced to North America by the British Army in Montreal in 1868, which played a series of games with McGill University.

In 1874, McGill arranged to play a few games at Har-vard, which liked the new game so much that it became a feature of the Ivy League.

Both the Canadian and American games evolved separately from this point into American and Canadian football.

Did you know...

have team unity. They know the sport is won at practice and that is exactly what they done all summer long. I feel good about our chances."

The Lady Bulldog cross country team will run in their fi rst meet at Schulenburg on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m.
