Elders update Yo Wiksas!

The Elders have been keeping busy with luncheons and boat trips these past few weeks. They went on a little adventure to Ba'as last week. They then went to check out Nemo Bay. It is a hidden paradise for sure. Definitely worth checking out.

We had 9 Elders at lunch on Wednesday May 25. Unfortunately that was not enough present to do nominations. It was then agreed upon that I will go knocking door to door to get nominations from Elders individually.

I will be knocking on your doors, if I haven't already :)

Voting will take place Wednesday June 8, 2016 from 10am-4pm. Results will be done and the new Elder's Council will be announced right after tally has been done.

So if you're over 60 and reading this, please come up to vote for your new Elder's Council. The term is for 2 years. Meetings will start immediately.

Terms of Agreement between Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elders and the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Trust: In order for the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elders to benefit from the Program; Elders over the age of 60 years of age must be attentive and actively involved in the Program. Meaning: participating in fundraisers, luncheons, trips and all other events or activities.

Please keep the terms of agreement in mind.

I will be away for medical May 30 afternoon, May 31 and June 1st. I will be back in the office Thursday June 2nd.

We will be catering for Trust June 9 and 10th. June 9th will be for 125 people and will be serving lunch up at the hall. June 10th will be at the Elder's Centre for the Trust Committee.

I will keep you all posted as to when the next boat trip is available to the Elders. Right now the winds are too strong and the boat is booked for other purposes.

Reminder that you can come in to use the treadmills and bikes any time during office hours.

Youth Sports & Rec also have youth nights Tuesday & Friday from 4pm-8pm, where the equipment is available for use.

Luncheon meetings every Wednesday starting at 12pm. Come have some fun, eat, laugh and get a chance to win some really neat door prizes!

Gilakasla,

Silena George Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elder's Coordinator 250 949 7406 [email protected]

FIRST NATIONS SUICIDE CRISIS LINE EXPANDS TO COVER ALL B.C. A First Nations mental health crisis line that has served people in Nuu-Chah-Nulth territory since 1993 will now be available across British Columbia.

KUU-US was started in Port Alberni, B.C., in response to a high rate of suicide and attempted suicides in Nuu-Chah-Nulth communities.

Through a new partnership with the First Nations Health Authority, the service will be available to Aboriginal people across the province.

"Right from the get-go we ensured there was a teen line, we made sure it was a toll-free line so it wasn't a barrier for people calling in," Elia Nicholson-Nave, executive director of the KUU-US Crisis Line society, told All Points West host Robyn Burns.

"We are the only Aboriginal crisis line in the nation ... so we are groundbreaking in that we are specific to the needs that we serve."

Nicholson-Nave says KUU-US, which last year had about 11,000 calls, is unique in that it follows up and checks on people who call in.

"We're finding that it really reduces people's crises because they know there's a 24-hour continuum of support that's there to be a gatekeeper for them," she said.

To keep that work going as the service expands, Nicholson-Nave says they are identifying "crisis leads" in every First Nation in B.C.

"We want the people providing supports to their nations to also be able to debrief, decompress and be able to call and get that support," she said.

KUU-US can be reached province-wide at 1-800-KUU-US17 (588-8717).

KUU-US also has an adult/elder line (250-723-4050) and a child/youth line (250-723-2040). Both can be accessed through 1-800-588-8717.
