Dear Friends of St. Louise, If you heard my homily on Pentecost Sunday, you will recall that I spoke of the importance of both communal and individual, or pri-vate, prayer. I borrowed from Fr. Henri Nouwen’s insight that these are like our two hands folded in prayer. Our personal prayer gives life to the liturgical prayer of the com-munity that otherwise could fall into empty ritual; and our communal prayer helps private prayer avoid the danger of becoming “egocentric and eccentric,” as Nouwen puts it. I said that the “two hands of prayer” are something like the tongues of fire that came over the disciples at Pentecost. Our celebration of the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ is an opportunity for us to understand more deeply what it means to pray the Eucharist. The Eucharist itself includes both communal and personal (private) prayer. Through the personal and communal aspects of the liturgy, enacted together, we enter fully into the experi-ence. The Mass includes numerous short periods of silence: For exam-ple, before the opening prayer – that is, the few seconds between when the priest says, Let us pray, and when he actually says the pray-er. One might use those few seconds to bring to mind what happened during the week, or what is coming up, and then offer a simple, private prayer, like Jesus, I give myself to you in this Mass. There are similar brief periods of silence after each reading and after the homily, and when everyone is seated after the Communion Rite is complete. These are moments when we reach out to God deep in our own hearts. As important as are the times of silence, so too are the moments of communal prayer, when we join together in reaching out to God. There are ways in which we can make our communal prayer stronger: • Pray the prayers with heart, mind and soul. When I look out from

the sanctuary during Mass I am struck by people’s body lan-guage. Some are fully engaged, others not so much. Some don’t even say the prayers. It is our responsibility, our privilege and our joy to help make each liturgy a “full, active and conscious” cele-bration.

• Sing the songs! St. Augustine tells us that one who sings prays

twice. What a great deal! Don’t worry about your singing skill! Someone once complained to Blessed Pier Giorgio that he had a horrible voice. He said, “God doesn’t care what I sound like. The important thing is that I sing!” If you have ever been at a Mass where everyone is singing, you know what a powerful difference it makes.

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

...Fr. Gary’s article continued • The Communion Rite is … the body of Christ, giving the Body of

Christ to the body of Christ. (St. Augustine’s idea, not mine!) We celebrate a rich reality during the Communion Rite: the sharing of the Eucharist is a profound union of the body of Christ – that is, the people and the ministers – with the Body and Blood of Christ under the appearance of bread and wine. Everything that we do express-es in an outward way our inner spiritual union. Therefore, we all stand together during the communion procession, and we unite our voices in song. There are many beautiful private devo-tions, like lighting candles or praying before the Blessed Sacra-ment. But the time for those is before or after Mass, and most es-pecially not during the communion procession!

A note on making the communion procession flow smoothly: We have the option of receiving communion in the hand or on the tongue, or re-ceiving a blessing. Please help the ministers by clearly expressing which option you are choosing. If you are going to receive in the hand, extend both hands at chest level, one on top of the other (like a miniature “throne”) and let the minister place the host in your hand. Step to the side and consume the host in the sight of the minister; this is important, to avoid consecrated hosts ending up on the floor or in a songbook. If you are receiving on the tongue, kindly step forward with your hands folded, and extend your tongue out-side your mouth, so that the minister can avoid touching your mouth and tongue or dropping the host. Either way, after the minis-ter says “The Body of Christ,” respond with, “Amen.” Just, “Amen.” The one word Amen says, “Thank you, I believe, So be it, We are” and much more. Those who come forward for a blessing should cross their arms over their chests, so that the minister clearly knows that they are asking for a blessing; please help your young children get their arms in position. Respond to the blessing also with “Amen!” These simple points will help us all to celebrate the Eucharist with true love and devotion (and a minimum of distraction). Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Gary Zender

Fr. Carlos Welcome The weekend of July 6/7, we invite all parishion-ers to plan to stay after Mass to welcome Fr. Carlos to St. Louise Parish. The 1PM Mass please plan to stay July 14 to welcome Fr. Carlos.

St. Louise 60th Anniversary Pilgrimage to the Holy Land- What is a Pilgrimage?

The purpose of Christian pilgrimage was summarized by Pope Benedict XVI this way: “To go on pilgrimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art or history.

To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich

fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe.”

The dates and cost have been set, we are planning a 12-day pilgrimage, with departure from Seattle on October 12, 2020 and returning on October 23, 2020.The cost is $3,875, per person, double occupancy. This cost includes air and land travel, hotel accommodations, entrance fees to holy sites, and breakfast and dinner each day. Since this pilgrimage is in cele-bration of our 60th Anniversary, St. Louise parishioners will be given first priority in signing up. Should space remain availa-ble, friends and family from other parishes will be welcome. Watch this space for updates and consider joining us on this holy pilgrimage. Please contact Dawn McIntosh,

[email protected], with any questions.

FUNERAL MINISTRY "… gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd..”

Detailed infor-mation about the campaign goals will be provided through bul-letin and pulpit announcements, mailed to every parish house-hold, and posted on the parish website in the months ahead. Our parish will be participating in this campaign in the coming months. We have a volunteer information event on Thursday, June 27, from 6–7 PM in the parish hall. Adult Faith Formation: “Word on Fire” Videos and Materials for Home Study

As adults, we all want to learn and grow in our relationship to God. We do that through prayer and service; and we can do it through intentional study. The St. Louise Adult Faith Formation Committee would like to suggest some home study resources from “Word on Fire,” a media ministry founded by acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian Bishop Robert Barron.

The WordOnFire.org website hosts daily blog posts, weekly articles, and an extensive audio archive. There are video series on a wide range of topics, from the story of King David to Christ’s call to conversion. You can read or watch whenever it works for your schedule.

All of the Word on Fire materials are free to use via our St. Louise parish subscription. To access them, first register for Flocknote by clicking on the “Sign up for Flocknote” link, which may be found on the St. Louise website, stlouise.org, then log in to Flocknote and click on Word on Fire ENGAGE!

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Everyone is invited to join in celebrating a novena to the Virgin Mary under her title, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. “Our Lady of Perpetual Help" is the name given to Mary as depicted in a famous, centuries-old icon in the Byzantine style. The icon and the devotion to Mary it inspires is in the special charge of the Redemptorist order of priests. You can see a picture of the icon and read about its history, miracles and symbolism at their website at http://www.iconoflove.org/.

Although anyone can make a private novena at any time, the Church teaches that there is added efficacy in the union of the faithful at prayer. Holding this public novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a St. Louise tradition, sponsored by the Fil-Am community. Please come! The dates for the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help: June 29 in the chapel at 9:30AM.

If your household hasn’t had the chance to make a pledge, please help your local Catholic Church commu-nity to make a difference together with all the other parishes in Western Washington. We can do this! We also know that many folks can give more than the $34 to make up for those who can’t.
