Dear Friends of the Y,

You may have heard Napoleon Hill’s quote, “The starting point of all achievement is desire.” We desire to achieve something big! Fortunately, we are in a great position to do so and are excited to share the 2013 annual report for the YMCA of South Palm Beach County.

This sentiment of achievement is one that is true for many YMCA members as well as for our organization. As a cause-driven organization, the Y aims to make a true positive impact in our community, which is why we strive to deliver the very best in services under our three areas of focus:

Youth Development: The Y makes a difference with every child and teen by helping them grow self-confidence and self-esteem through our programs.

Healthy Living: The Y takes pride in the work we do toward building a healthier community for everyone from infants to seniors. And…

Social Responsibility: The Y values the many community partners we work with to give back and provide support to our neighbors. Activities such as our Annual Campaign and special events allowed us to distribute $862,000 in direct financial assistance to children, families, and individuals who otherwise would have been unable to participate at the Y in 2013.

After our 2012 strategic planning process identified specific areas such as diabetes prevention, drowning prevention, education enrichment and the YBIKE program where the Y could make a difference, we focused our efforts in 2013.

We’re pleased to report that our Y was one of 100 funded by YUSA to offer the Diabetes Prevention Program, which we are rolling out now. And, we are poised to hire a Drowning Prevention Coordinator and are currently developing a partnership plan to help eliminate drowning in Palm Beach County. Stay tuned for more to come.

Thank you to our more than 40,000 members, over 670 volunteers, and more than 380 staff who have all contributed and participated in an outstanding year.

Our impact is great, and the ambition to make a difference is strong. We can do it, with your continued support! Our desire as an organization is to make a true positive impact in achieving change that will strengthen our community.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:OUR MISSION: The YMCA of South Palm Beach County’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

OUR CAUSE: At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn and grow.

BIG PICTURE: YMCA’s have more than 2,600 locations in 10,000 communities across the country. 21 million people of all ages, incomes, backgrounds and abilities come to the Y to learn, grow and thrive. 500,000 volunteers – kids, parents, individuals, businesses and community leaders – are personally vested in our cause. 20,000 full time staff, 64 million households, and 32 million children ages 14 and under live within three miles of a YMCA, while 1,518 YMCAs serve communities where the median family income is below the U.S. average.

FURTHER IMPACT: The YMCA of South Palm Beach County recently identified four additional areas where we can make a critical impact on our community.

Diabetes Prevention: With one in three adults prediabetic in Palm Beach County, the need is great. Our Y is proud to be one of 100 Y’s to have been funded for this program by YUSA and we are now in the roll out stages. We’ve hired a full-time coordinator, are doing partner outreach, continuing to seek additional funding and are building a list of participants.

Drowning Prevention: Our Y has set forth a goal to eliminate drowning in our community. Our board of trustees has funded this initiative and we are developing programs, have plans to hire a coordinator and are leveraging our committee so we can partner with other organizations in Palm Beach County to make a change with this preventable tragedy.

Education Enrichment: Our Y continues to focus on enriching our programs with learning. During the summer, many kids suffer from summer learning loss. We aim to infuse skill and knowledge into programs like camp, which also happens to be lots of fun!

YBIKE: We are excited to be launching a new program called YBIKE. Started to help empower our youth to ride bikes for fun, fitness and transportation. We aim to teach kids bike safety, biking skills, environmental safety and plan to travel to parks for field trips.
