Introduction

“Together with our partners we will create a healthy, active and sustainable community by engaging all individuals and families to achieve their full potential”

It is extremely satisfying to report that as Manningham YMCA entered into its 22nd year serving the Manningham community, it continued to provide a strong presence in the local community during the 2013-14 financial year. This was able to occur whilst also preparing our main business unit, Aquarena, for major redevelopment works scheduled to begin in September 2014.

By closely following our strategic and annual business plans, Manningham YMCA was able to provide support and guidance throughout capital works at Aquarena, provide a new coaching program for the Doncaster Templestowe Swimming Club, transition to a revised YMCA swimming lesson program, extend our reach into the community via an innovative Video Games Program and continue to grow all programs within our stadiums - all of which can be read further about in this Report.

Aquarena Redevelopment Works

During the year the construction of the new Plant Room at Aquarena was completed which concluded stage 3a of the Aquarena Master Plan. The Plant Room was originally scheduled to be completed in November 2013, however, various delays pushed its completion date out to May 2014.

As a result, preparations for stages 4, 5, and 6 of the master plan were put on hold pushing their start dates back to September 2014. This created a stalling effect on the Aquarena business unit and all areas of the business slowed as a result of the ambiguity. Membership campaigns, new programs, investments in equipment and staffing structures were all areas of the business which were put on hold until the exact date of the major interruptions was known. The first major disruption to the centre occurred in May and was a short four day project to upgrade the gas lines.

Aquarena Performance

Aquarena’s total attendance decreased by 7% throughout the year, with the majority of this decrease occurring in January due to the impact of cooler weather and operational interruptions as a result of an ageing plant and its malfunctions. Casual swimming alone had its lowest figure since 2004 with 68,521 visits compared to 89,535 last year.

Pleasingly, all Gold Day and Aquatic memberships continued to climb as a result of the growth of the Pryme Movers and Squad Coaching programs. Gold memberships decreased by 6.6% as a result of the delays in the capital works program and also the significant increase in the number of competitors in the Health and Fitness market.

Average membership retention decreased slightly to 76.5% which remains the second highest in Aquarena’s history. This continues to be one of the highest retention rates

ever seen in the Australian Health and Fitness industry, and the focus will now turn to maintaining retention above 70% throughout the remainder of the capital works program.

Youth Services

The Youth Services team continued with a strong focus on youth leadership and youth input into programs and we are always amazed with the quality and diversity of programs which are being delivered by our team. This year saw the introduction of the Video Games Project, the Sunday’s with Steve program at Park Orchards, an increased number of Youth Mentoring matches and an overall growth in pre-existing programs.

Stadiums Contract

Our management of the Indoor Highball Stadiums contract continued into its second year. Developing budgets, plans and forecasts for the second year of the contract is proving to be much more accurate, which allows for more confidence in new programming options.

A new pricing and priority of use policy has been developed and will be implemented in the next financial year. This will allow for a greater parity in the overall use of the facilities and provide sufficient income to ensure the facilities are maintained at a level which the community has come to expect.

Governance and Safeguarding Children

mid-2014. Achieving this accreditation involved a great deal of work by our administration and staff teams and the process involved a large focus on recruitment, training, a child-safe culture and responding to child abuse reports and allegations.

Staff

At Manningham YMCA we pride ourselves on our staff retention and one of our goals is to be an employer of choice. Staff retention figures for the year continued to be very pleasing. Figures of note were that 56% of permanent staff have been with the organisation for five years or more and 42% of casual staff have been with the organisation for three or more years. These very positive staff retention figures are reflective of our passion and commitment to the training and development of our staff. Other initiatives such as our Staff Reward and Recognition program, access to YMCA programs and facilities, and annual appraisals all assist in staff retention.

Financial Summary

The organisation’s total consolidated turnover increased by 6.8% which includes an extra six months of stadium management and nine months of revenue from the squad coaching program. This resulted in a total increase in consolidated revenue

of $552,917 bringing the total turnover to $6,540,348.

Although turnover had a substantial increase due to the increase in programs, total expenditure also increased by 9.6%. Water (49.1%), Cleaning (32%), and Depreciation of Equipment (58%) were the major stand out items throughout the year.

Manningham YMCA’s financial stability has improved over the past two years, however, was only maintained throughout this year as a result of the decline in business at Aquarena. Pleasingly, Manningham City Council recognised this and agreed to reimburse us for the changes in the carbon tax for the last two years and the increase in the cost of water. Overall, taking into account the assistance from Manningham City Council, Manningham YMCA returned a small surplus of $38,522.

We hope you enjoy reading the rest of our Report.

Works continued to be completed throughout the year on Stage 3A of the Aquarena Master Plan. The works included a new plant room which was designed to initially service the 50 metre pool and provide heating to the dive pool. Other features of the new plant room include an onsite chlorine generator using high grade salt, integrated management system providing full analytics of current plant performance, efficient water heating and administration space looking out over the pool.

The plant also includes a Cogeneration unit which is yet to be commissioned. Once this unit has been commissioned the plant will be able to produce some of the electricity needs of the centre providing cost savings and an increase in our efficiencies in running such a large community facility.

NEW PLANT ROOM

YMCA SWIMMING LESSONSThe YMCA AquaSafe program underwent a national review with a goal to further enhance the curriculum and awareness of the program. Following the review there was an implementation of changes across the country, including a program name change from AquaSafe to “YMCA Swimming Lessons”.

This was designed to increase awareness and match the expectations of our customers in relation to the product being delivered.

In late January the Swimming Lesson changes were fully implemented at Aquarena, including changes to the school swimming program. This included changes to curriculum, levels, assessments, teacher training, marketing materials and customer communication. The change was well communicated to all participants and significant training provided to all levels of staff to ensure a smooth changeover.

The new program is designed to increase the frequency of progression through the levels and to keep students developing and learning as they continue to gather lifelong aquatic skills. Partnered with the new squad structure, the YMCA Swimming Lesson program at Aquarena has one of the best pathway programs available within the YMCA and was a topic of discussion at this year’s YMCA National Aquatic Forum.

MANNINGHAM YMCA – DONCASTER TEMPLESTOWE SWIMMING CLUB AGREEMENTSeptember 2013 saw the start of an agreement between Manningham YMCA and the Doncaster Templestowe Swimming Club. The agreement provides for Manningham YMCA to provide all of the coaching for the club program as well as taking coaching payments through a monthly debit system making it much easier for families throughout the year. It also allows for greater HR and administrative support while providing a high quality coaching program.

Manningham YMCA appointed Nic Campbell as Head Coach in a full time capacity split with the Aquatic Fitness Team Leader role. Nic has been a positive influence on the swimmers helping them to achieve improved results in a short amount of time. Nic has also been able to further develop the coaching team giving them more guidance and increased focus on pathways through the program.

Since the beginning of the agreement we have implemented a number of changes including a monthly debit that includes coaching and aquatic membership fees, a streamlined pathway which is clear and easy in terms of swimmer progression, new squad groups to better cater for all levels of swimmers as well as a number of swim clinics and training camps.

At this early stage we are seeing many positive results from working with the club and we have been able to double the number of swimmers in the program and increase the standing of the program to it being the lead swimming club in Manningham.

HIGHBALL STADIUMSThe management of Manningham YMCA highball stadiums moved into its second year and completed the first full financial year of operation. This allowed the move out of the “transition” phase of our operation and more into proactive management of the facilities.

A key aspect of our management of the stadiums is providing programs which allow everyone to participate in a wide range of sports. One part of this is to break down the barriers to participation and with that in mind, we run a number of social sessions at Manningham DISC. These sessions are conducted in a ‘non-competitive’ manner and allow participants to play against a range of opponents. One example of this is the Monday Senior Sports which is a combination of social Badminton, Table Tennis and exercise session for over 50’s. The session runs for 3 hours and participants can be involved in the session in whichever way they choose. Some will participate in all activities and some in just one. Either way, participants are able to enjoy the game of their choice in a social and fun setting without the pressure of competition.

One of the growing aspects of the stadiums is holiday clinics. While some of the clubs are running targeted holiday programs at their sites, Manningham YMCA is also aiming to compliment that with beginner level clinics which cross a number of sports. So far, these have included basketball, futsal, badminton and table tennis.

Whilst the stadiums are targeted at being used for many different sports, basketball remains the sport in greatest demand. Across the six sites managed by Manningham YMCA, five of them host basketball training and competition on all levels. Two are used for local Primary School competition, four are used by the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA), three are used for Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and one is used for Big V.

All in all, Manningham YMCA stadiums provide a wide range of opportunity for the community and we are committed to ensuring this opportunity only continues to grow.

Page 11: YMCA MANNINGHAM Annual Report 2013 – 2014manningham.ymca.org.au/About-Us/PublishingImages/Pages/Our-Mi… · Annual Report 2014 3. mid-2014. Achieving this accreditation involved

MANNINGHAM YMCA’S INNOVATIVE VIDEO GAMES PROGRAMThe Youth Services Video Games program now engages hundreds of young people with all abilities into safe and social video game play. An example of this is Chris, a young person who two years ago was completely disconnected from friends, school and the broader community. He spent his days at home playing video games avoiding all contact with the outside world. Manningham YMCA connected him to the video games program.

At the video game events held throughout the year he met the friends he was actually playing with online, but had never met in real life! Transferring these friendships to ‘the real world’ means Chris now has real life friends and spends less time playing video games. Chris has also joined the YMCA gym which, if you had asked him a year ago, would have been unimaginable.

The Video Games program which commenced in early 2013 is assisted by a volunteer youth leadership group who also provide expertise on the use of video games in other areas of Youth Services. In recognition of the program, it was awarded the READYS award by YacVic and VLGA for its innovation and excellence in the delivery of youth services.

In early 2014 the www.videogames.org.au website which was developed by the Youth Services team was launched and is a website which promotes community education activities and advocates positive and safe video game playing.

SUNDAYS WITH STEVEThe past year has seen exciting developments in “Sundays with Steve”, from it’s humble beginnings into one of Youth Service’s flagship programs.

The program has been running for 18 months now, regularly attended by about 10 young people aged 10 to 15 years old. The program was started by Youth Program Coordinator Josh Clarke, who has been with Youth Services for over 4 years. Josh recognised that a significant number of young people in the Manningham area were keen on weekend activities, but hadn’t been able to find something that suited their needs.

This group of young people didn’t fit into organised sports but wanted recreation activities with wide variety, physical engagement, safety, inclusivity and fun. So Sundays with Steve was born.

Since it’s inception Sundays with Steve activities have been very diverse, straight out of a young person’s imagination, including food fights, nerf wars and billy cart races. During the summer water fight the volunteer

group leaders were forced inside as water-bombs rained down on them from all directions.

Last winter the group had a sensational time tobogganing down Lake Mountain, dodging flying snowballs as the leaders got their own back.

Regular attendees have acquired a number of benefits through their involvement in the program. Josh has seen the young people get increasingly engaged, coming up with more and more activity ideas, developing friendships, meeting leaders and other young people they wouldn’t usually meet. Particular benefits have been seen in participants with emotional and behavioural issues, such as high functioning Autism and difficulties managing anger.

Sundays with Steve allows young people in Manningham to experience a huge variety of fun activities without spending a lot of money, while developing their social skills and self-confidence.

Each year Manningham YMCA awards recognition of service awards to staff.

We were very pleased to receive our Safeguarding Children Accreditation in July 2014.

This is a program which is overseen by the Australian Childhood Foundation. It was developed in response to the devastating impact of child abuse. For over 18 months, we have been reviewing, and implementing policies, procedures and standards for protecting children and young people in our care.

We are required to meet standards in seven areas of the program, including:

• Recruitment and screening of employees and volunteers

• Staff induction and training• Supporting a child-safe culture• Responding to Child abuse reports and allegations

Our accreditation will be reviewed each 12 months. We certainly don’t see that this is the end point in child safety for Manningham YMCA, but rather as an ongoing process of improvement.

We would like to thank all of our staff and volunteers for their ongoing work and involvement in this process.

FOUNDATION Y MANNINGHAM BENEVOLENT SUPPORT PROGRAM

Manningham YMCA Youth & Community Services Inc. Board:-

Dimitra Ferizis - PresidentAnne Farquharson David BaumgartnerPaul DunnLena IacovangeloMarita IrelandNicole MatthewsCarcy WongJulian Yule

Manningham YMCA Youth & Community Services Inc. continued to strengthen its presence within the local community during 2013/2014. Through many initiatives within the Foundation Y Manningham program, we were able to raise funds and provide access to programs for those in disadvantageous circumstances in our local community.

In past years the majority of the funds raised would come from our main entity Manningham YMCA Inc., however, this year majority of funds were received via the following channels:

• Our staff “Workplace Giving” scheme which allows staff to directly assist the Foundation by donating via our payroll system, continued to grow with staff donating a total of $2,176.50.

• Aquarena participating in the YMCA Swimathon on Sunday 2 March with any monies raised divided evenly between YMCA Australia and Foundation Y Manningham. As a result of the event, Foundation Y Manningham received $5,321.69.

• Personal donations, collection tins, miscellaneous totalled $1,012.95.

Manningham YMCA continued to be a significant provider of benevolent support within the Manningham community. Through a formal process by third parties, applications were made, assessed and processed. As a direct result, people in need received support in a wide variety of ways as shown in the following snapshots for 2013/2014:

• Provided 46 gym memberships and 8 aquatic memberships to the disadvantaged to assist their health and fitness and wellbeing.

• Provided 4 terms of aquatic education lessons to 2 disadvantaged children.

• Supported 13 disadvantaged children from mainstream schools to attend school camping programs.

• Provided financial support to a disadvantaged child to attend school activities, another child to participate in a school exchange program, and another child to purchase text books.

• Provided financial support to an elderly person to purchase reading glasses and another elderly person to fund bathroom modifications such as hand rails.

• Provided 4 Myki travel passes to disadvantaged students to allow them to travel to and from school.

• Supported a family with childcare costs.• Supported a child to attend the YMCA

Hip Hop program.

Each year at Christmas time we assist hundreds of families in Manningham by generous giving of gifts by the local community Again in December, a “giving tree’ was located in the foyer of Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre with all gifts received forwarded to Doncare Community Services for distribution to those families in need within Manningham.

All of the above benevolent support totals $31,966 worth of assistance to the Manningham community during the 2013/2014 financial year.
