What is Physical Literacy?
Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsi-
bility for engagement in physical activities for life in any environment
The objective of undertaking a physical literacy directive at the YMCA is
to increase the movement vocabulary in our participants. An increased
movement vocabulary of an individual is related to a greater chance for
success and confidence in a variety of sport and recreational activities.
Our goal is to equip participants with a transferable set of skills to par-
ticipate in sport and recreation for life. Ultimately we want “robust par-
ticipants” which we consider to be strong, healthy and vigorous, or are
able to withstand or overcome adverse conditions. Physical Literacy
Classes teach Fundamental Movement Skills through fun games, obsta-
cle courses and coaching from our YMCA fundamental movement skill
trained leaders. While the Physical Literacy Classes specifically target
this area, it is important to note that physical literacy is also seen in
many of our youth, aquatics and child care programs.
Why is Physical Literacy Important? Child hood obesity and inactivity is on the rise.
Without developed physical literacy, children and youth are at a greater risk of dropping out of physical activity
and sport. By developing fundamental movement skills and increasing one’s motor ability, it allows for one to
establish a good foundation to participate in many sports and physical activities.

Multisport Fundamentals The Regina Multisport Club is partnering with YMCA Regina to offer 7 to 13 year-olds youth a multisport activity pro-gram to have fun, improve fitness, and to learn proper swimming, biking and running techniques. Novice and experi-enced youth are welcome. Because this is a multisport activity, cross-training is built in and the participants will be provided variety, balance, and gain overall fitness. Also, it will provide confidence for youth that may be interested in participating in local youth-oriented multisport events (e.g. the YMCA Y-Kids-Tri event in July). Tuesdays Northwest 7:10 to 8:30 pm Swim and Bike Sundays, Downtown 8:30 to 10:00 am Swim and Run Visit http://www.reginamultisport.com/fundamentals for more infor-mation and to register.
Regina Marlins Swim Club Based at the Regina YMCA, the Regina Marlins swim club provides professional coaching to swimmers from 4 years to post-secondary. Our coaches work with our swimmers in small groups, helping them to set and achieve their personal fitness and swimming goals. Our team offers an environment of fun, fitness and friendship. Mini Marlins: Boys and girls as young as 4 years old progress quickly in our Mini Marlins program. Mini Marlins have lots of fun while developing skills and endurance. As they progress through three levels of Mini Mar-lins, swimmers will learn the four basic strokes as well as starts and turns. Competitive Program: For swimmers who are 7 years up to post-secondary, we offer a high quality competitive speed swimming pro-gram. Swimmers progress through our White, Blue, Red and Senior com-petitive groups. Competitive swimmers attend developmental swim meets throughout the province and may attend invitational and champi-onship meets throughout Canada. Non-Competitive Program: This program is designed for swimmers who want to stay involved in swimming and work on fitness and endurance. It is a great option for cross-training with other sports, such as hockey, triathlon, gymnastics, or dance. It can also complement swimming lessons or life-saving courses by providing additional opportunities to develop strength and endurance. Speed swimming develops strength and endurance, and skill. It is a great way to improve fitness while having fun. Swimming provides a low impact, aerobic workout for your whole body. Moving through the water provides resistance training, which strengthens and tones muscles. We have operated successfully in Regina since 1967 and are affiliated with Swim Saskatchewan and Swimming Canada. More information about the Marlins is available by contacting [email protected] , visiting our website at www.reginamarlins.com or calling 306-789-7732.

FUNdamentals (Ages 5-9) Continue a child’s movement endeavours with this skills fo-cused class. Whether your child is in sport or simply looking to increase or improve their movement repertoire, this class will provide a user manual for children to master some already fa-miliar movements and work on new, more complex skills. It’s very important for children to practice a wide variety of move-ment skills to increase their confidence to try new activities now and into adulthood.
• Pivoting, Dodging, Changing Directions • Bounding and Landing • Throwing, Catching, Kicking and Passing fundamentals
• Skipping, Galloping, Lateral Movements and Balance
FUNdamentals –Girls (Ages 5-12) Empowering young girls to be strong, confident movers is aim of this class. Research shows that girls who are not actively en-gaged in sport/recreational activity by the age of 10 are at a higher risk of being less active through their teen years and in-to adulthood. Our goal is to foster Physical Literacy skills in an inviting all female environment that is fun and builds confi-dence. Course material is identical to FUNdamentals
Creative Movement (Ages 6-9)
A continuation from the skills introduced in Phys. Lit. FUNda-mentals. To be successful in this class, youth should have experience with the skills listed in the FUNdamen-tals. Skills learned in this class are a great introduction to skills needed for Parkour Jam.

To be successful in this class, youth should have experience with the skills listed in the FUNdamentals.

MARTIAL ARTS
Judo
Judo, which is translated as the “gentle way”, teaches the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. This is the flexible or efficient use of balance, leverage, and move-ment in the performance of Judo throws and other skills. Skill, technique and timing, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo. At our YMCA the Regina Y Judo Club coaches Judo through volunteers. They have a history of producing high perfor-mance athletes that compete at a National and Internation-al level. All classes are at the Downtown YMCA.
Additional Fees to the Regina Y Judo Club apply, visit www.reginayjudo.com for more information. Participants must register with the Regina Y Judo Club. Participants must also be a member of the YMCA in order to be a part of this program or pay a drop in fee for entry

Birthday Parties Location: Northwest & East The YMCA offers a fantastic venue for children to spend their birthday parties away from home. The YMCA will provide a party host to orient party families and guests with the facility, provide and set up equipment, and answer any questions that may arise. A party includes two 45 minute blocks each in an activity area of your choice. Trained staff will help parents fa-cilitate the play experiences chosen for their party while par-ents will be responsible to supervise activities and guests. Your party will then spend 60 minutes in the party room enjoying whatever food you provide, opening presents and playing. Please note that the YMCA of Regina is a nut free organization and adheres to a total nut free policy. For more information, contact: Birthday Party Coordinator 306.757.9622 ext. 319 [email protected]
