Sometimes saying “thank you” to those who have supported these 2015 KEMBALI graduates for years just doesn’t seem like enough. They have been blessed in so many different ways. Some of them have even been supported since they were in elementary school. A simple “thanks” is not adequate and to elaborate with “thank you” doesn’t seem to be enough either. How do these kids convey to their donors that what they have done for their lives was unexpected, gracious and more than generous?

So we took the liberty to interview some of the 2015 graduates, after we read all eighty thank you letters, which YKIP received during the fourth quarter distribution event. Few graduates were able to express their thankfulness in English very well, but some others were not. While we did the interviews, we found their letters did not convey the same sentiment as if you were there looking through their eyes and listening to what they said, about what changed in their life after they graduated. They

have been thinking about the blessings in their life a lot and they’re thanking God for your support throughout the years. We believe that what they actually want to say is that these kinds of blessings deserve shouts and jumps for joy!

The more they think about the “perfect thank you”, the more they think that the best way to show their highest appreciation is not only to utter words, but to live by them, to be a blessing to someone else. Maybe a blessing isn’t meant to be re-paid, but meant to be passed on.

To those of you who have so generously blessed these kids over these past years, if we could even describe the words from each kid, we would say on behalf of them a very heartfelt “Thank you”. We want to let you know that they promise you they will do their best to be a blessing to someone else, their families and communities.

When Saying “Thank You” Isn’t Enough Story of 2015’s KEMBALI Graduates

To Sir With Love Those school girl days Of telling tales and biting nails are gone But in my mind I know They will still live on and on But how do you thank someone Who has taken you from crayons to perfume? Oh, it isn't easy but I'll try If you wanted the sky I would write across the sky in letters That would soar a thousand feet high To sir, with love The time has come For closing books and long last looks must end And as I leave, I know that I am leaving my best friend A friend who taught me right from wrong And weak from strong that's a lot to learn What can I give you in return? If you wanted the moon I would try to make a start but I would rather you let me give my heart To sir, with love Single by Lulu from the album To Sir, With Love (1967)

“.. I am a hard worker,” said Wayan, “.. and my other strength is I easily adapt to any situation I am in.” This is clearly shown by the tone of his voice that this boy understands very well who he is and what he wants.

Wayan is the first-born child - and the only son - born to a farm labor couple in Seraya in 1997. He has one sister who is still studying in junior high school and his parent’s total monthly income is less than IDR 500,000 or US$38.50. The KEMBALI program has supported Wayan’s education since he was in the tenth grade. He has been an enthusiastic student and his grades have always been satisfactory. Also Wayan has not only been an active student involved in many of his school organization’s activities but he has also received a best student award from his school for three consecutive years and has won many prizes in competitions.

Wayan is one of eight candidates who applied for a YKIP University

Scholarship in 2015. He plans to continue his studies focusing on a Public Health Science Program at the University of Udayana, in Bali.

We all hope that Wayan will reach higher and make his dreams come true…

Some dreams live on in time, forever Those dreams, you want with all your heart And I'll do whatever it takes Follow through with the promise I made Put it all on the line What I hoped for at last would be mine…

YKIP has another scholarship program to support the KEMBALI graduates, namely the Vocational Scholarship Program, which offers a one-year technical certified education program and internship. This year, YKIP will select more KEMBALI graduates to receive a one-year scholarship in computing, management or a hospitality training program.

The training program usually begins in July; however the new student admission process commenced in February. The annual cost for each sponsored student to complete their one year education is approximately USD 2,657 which covers not only for the tuition fee but also for other allowances (living cost, books, etc.) necessary for the student to complete the training program. Please go this link for more details about the Vocational Scholarship Program and cost:

http://www.ykip.org/our-programs/vocational-education/education-budget/.

If you would like to sponsor one of our students through the Vocational Scholarship Program, please contact us at [email protected].

Your support will help more KEMBALI graduates continue their education and also help in our effort to break the cycle of poverty in Bali.

Fifteen KIDS children who are in elementary through to senior high level have successfully demonstrated satisfactory results where their GPA are all above 80 out of 100 for their first semester report of Academic Year 2014/2015. While two KIDS children who are in higher education have also showed remarkable achievement with the acquisition of a GPA above 3.3 for their latest GPA. We would like to single out those children who did outstanding work last semester: Lucky, Linda, Indah, Yoga, Dwiga, Widnyana, Wina, Idat, Ayu, Alief, Novi, Komang, Aldi, Izzul, Fendy, Indra, and Cika.

Nothing makes us happier than seeing these KIDS’ students excelling at school and make their parents proud. They have worked hard to earn those kind of remarkable achievements. Congratulation!

Four KIDS children have also won prizes for non-academic achievement in Bali in 2014. The first one is Novi who was in ninth grade at State Junior High School in Buleleng.

She won two drawing competitions for Junior High School Students. She has won first prize in the Buleleng District's Junior High School Drawing Competition and third prize in the Buleleng Festival Caricature Drawing Competition 2014. This is not the first time Novi has won a prize for this field of competition. Novi is a talented girl and she has her mother who fully supported her in developing her skills in drawing.

The two brothers who love to sing, Alief and Aldi (see photo), each has won third prize in the Denpasar City 30th Student Art Week's Competition 2014. Alief won in the choir competition category, while Aldi won in the Balinese Pop Song singing category.

KIDS also have Wawan, who has won third prize in the Junior High 'Sadou' Japanese Calligraphy Competition 2014. According to his mother, Wawan has shown his interest in Japanese language when he started studying it in junior high school and other than that, Wawan also has a gift for drawing. No wonder that he is good in calligraphy, he has the perfect combination of talent and interest in himself.

How amazing these KIDS have grown up with each of their uniqueness and potential! Let's hope they all succeed in achieving what they all aspire. So keep up the good work, KIDS!

We all want our children to have strong core values, but we don’t simply teach them only by telling them what to do. We demonstrate these values in action. Some people put on a garage sale and donate all the proceeds to benefit a local shelter. Some others donate their time and energy, nursing babies and toddlers in an orphanage. They are making the community a better place through their own efforts. And what is the side effect if we involve youngsters in our actions? It stimulates the young minds to have a wonderful dose of can-do attitude.

In October 2013, through YKIP social media, we shared a link about an article published by an online magazine, Holidays With A Difference: Introducing Kids To Poverty. It was about a 13-year old girl named Leah, a daughter of an Australian expat living in Singapore, who witnessed the bare conditions of an Indonesian family during her holiday with her mother. Leah shared her life-changing experience, which according to her, helped her determine her life purpose of helping others by working with charity organizations.

Another story is about a 10-year old boy named Rhenjiro, who joined the KEMBALI Scholarship Program’s Fourth

Quarter Distribution Event with both of his volunteering parents . The boy’s parents were busy helping in the uniform fitting section when Rhenjiro assisted in fitting the size of shoes for the KEMBALI students. A couple days later, Rhenjiro’s mother delivered a handwritten note, which he wrote for us and the note reads like this:

…On 19th April, I went to Mengwi with the YKIP team for a school supply give away. Many people came to get the supplies. I felt sorry for them. They have to line up just to get supplies for school. I felt so thankful that I can go to school and I don't need to do something hard just for going to school. I felt very, very lucky. But thanks to YKIP, they can still go to school. They can have a better future.

Thank you YKIP.

Rhenjiro

Now we know that the boy was not just there to watch. He learned.

KEMBALI News

Finally, on May 2nd, we completed the Fourth Quarter Distribution event of the KEMBALI Scholarship Program. This is our last distribution event for the 2014/2015 academic year and was held throughout Bali’s five districts, 507 students from 13 areas received cash allowances and vitamin supplies, which we distributed in 10 days. In this quarterly event, YKIP also took its chance to collect all shoe and uniform sizes from all of the KEMBALI students who will continue receiving YKIP’s support in the upcoming academic year of 2015/2016.

Twenty-six volunteers were involved in this quarterly event. Among them, twenty-two volunteers were from Mitrais. Their contribution of energy and time to YKIP was greatly appreciated.

"When kids volunteer it tells others that they don't have to be perfect or famous or even grown up to make a difference." ~ Kalynn Dobos ~

Since October 2014, students from 4SB Mont Olivet – Lausanne, France, have been working on a fundraising initiative to help one KEMBALI elementary school student go to school. With great support from their parents and teachers, they sold cookies in their school and neighborhood for a couple of months. Since last April, they have able to raise CHF 1,140.00 or equal to IDR 14,962,500. Their donation has secured the educational cost of one

KEMBALI student whom they committed support to for four academic years. Such a great job done, especially by young kids like them! Hey kids, YOU ROCK!

These kids from 4SB Mont Olivet not only continue their fundraising initiative project but they also build connections between themselves and the student whom they are supporting. They write to each other from time to time, with

translation assistance from YKIP as well as one of their parents.

Laura Cohn is an artist, a painter by nature and in practice, who fall in love with the Indonesian people, its culture and its great abundance of art. In 1995, she launched From Bali to Bala: An Open House and Sale of Laura F. Cohn’s Contemporary Batik Paintings and Original Indonesian Handcrafts. This annual show has become a unique cross-cultural event, combining the traditional with the contemporary. In

addition to her unique batik paintings, she shows an unusual collection of imported handcrafts that she continues to buy directly from the artisans on her annual

trip back to Indonesia each year.

She brings Indonesia close to the heart of people in the United States through her show, where the visitors can play with unusual instruments, toys, and puppets; experience the rich of fabrics, colorful sarongs, silver jewelries, and much more. And not just that, what makes her show become even more special, she keeps her commitment to Indonesia by donating a portion of the proceeds each year to a different

nonprofit organization in Indonesia, which she hopes will bring more benefit to those who are less fortunate.

This year, YKIP is so grateful and honored to receive her attention. She helps us promote the YKIP scholarship program, which aims to help many of Bali’s disadvantaged children to get an education.

The show took place from November 16th until December 23rd, 2014 and YKIP received a portion of the proceeds in the amount of US$400.00 for supporting the KEMBALI scholarship program.

The annual charity day organized by Monica and Ray Sanderson, is in tribute to their beloved son, Greg Sanderson, and his mates Paul Cronin and Brad Ridley, who were killed when the Bali bombs exploded in 2002.

This year, on March 28th at the Forbes course, more than 200 golfers played in the Greg Sanderson Memorial. According to Monica, as published in the Forbes Advocate on March 31st, “So many people helped on the day and volunteered. It was just great.” She also said that a large number of businesses and individuals donated prizes, things like the golfing trophies, or things for the raffle and auction held in the clubhouse afterwards.

The auction went so well and “All goes to educate the kids in Bali…” said Monica. Through this year’s golf day charity, Monica and Ray have raised US$10,549.94, which means that over the past eleven years they have raised almost US$68,000.00 to support the YKIP educational program. In 2014, they agreed to allocate their donation to support the educational cost of 18 KEMBALI students. This year, with the donation amount they gave to YKIP, they can support more students.

For the Sanderson’s continuous commitment to support YKIP, and others who have generously supported them in organizing the event, words are unable to express our gratitude.

May Greg and his mates’ memory continue to encourage and inspire people to show acts of kindness for others and change many people’s lives into better ones, like they have already done for many YKIP children.

YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Inspirasia Foundation and Mitrais have given so we are able to deliver educational

assistance to disadvantaged children.

The Inspirasia Foundation is a philanthropy portfolio making investments in health & education projects with a high potential for growth, helping some of the most marginalized social groups in India, Indonesia, and Thailand, including the disabled, poor young women, and unschooled children. We believe in the power of “What IF.”

The Inspirasia Foundation, established as the Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was formed as a positive response to the tragic 2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a memorial to the spirit of the more than 200 innocent victims of that bomb, among them young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia Foundation supports 13 partners across Asia, including in Bali.

2015 sees Mitrais entering its 13th year of involvement in supporting YKIP activities. Mitrais’ involvement started in 2002 when Mitrais’ staff were involved in the Bali Bombings relief action, their support has continued through today and includes the provision of office space, accounting, IT, and internet support, as well as other volunteer services. Senior Mitrais employees are on the YKIP management board, cementing an already close bond between the two organizations.
