Jordan Bailey & Ima Boy Gator Coolest at Yeti Classic Futurity

By Tanya Randall After earning a $2,034 reserve championship at the PCR Pink Cadillac Futurity the week prior in Salina, Utah, Jordan Bailey and her homebred gelding Ima Boy Gator (“Thomas”) picked up their first futurity championship at the $3,000-added Yet Classic in Rock Springs, Wyoming. “I thought it was a really nice futurity,” said Bailey, who also wanted to thank her family for “making her dreams possible.” “It was really nice to be able to get out and go to a barrel race. The people there were so nice. They were super accommodating. It was super facility. We really liked it there.” Ironically, the Onalaska, Washington, barrel horse trainer hadn’t planned on staying down for the Yeti Classic until fellow competitor Vauna Walker mentioned it. “Vauna had told me there was a futurity in Wyoming,” she explained. “We really weren’t planning on doing anything. We were going to go home after Utah.” In Rock Springs, Bailey and Thomas picked up $2,868 for win-ning the futurity and placing in the open and sidepots. They were one hole of out of the money in the first round of the futurity with a 15.631 but came back to win the second round with a 15.425 and the average.

“He does pretty well with the smaller patterns,” she said. “He struggled with the ground a little, especially being on the bottom the drag the first day……. He bobbled on all the barrels that first

day, but he kept plowing through it. The second day, I was very sur-prised at how he clocked. He had a beautiful second and third. They were very fast barrels. The first, he went by a little bit, which is my timing issue. He did super good for not ever being there and having different ground conditions.” Bred in Bailey’s mother Tammy’s name, Thomas, 5, is by On A Gator, a full brother to standout performer FM Radio and noted barrel horse sire Lions Share Of Fame. His dam is a race-winning daughter of Judge Cash, Ima Girl Judge, that later became a win-ning barrel horse for Tammy. Thomas was her first foal. The sizable colt struggled at first due to a lack of colostrum and earned the name Thomas after the plucky little steam engine, Thomas the Train. Bailey started Thomas under saddle as a 2-year-old herself and took him to the pattern in the spring of his third year. “He was a super easy colt,” she said. “He just wanted to learn, wanted to work. I never had any big issues with him. He always

He was easy from the very beginning.” Thomas came along so well that Bailey considered entering the BFA Juvenile and running him as a 4-year-old in 2019. “He took to barrels super easy,” she said. “We thought about running him at the BFA because he came on super quick, but we decided to hold off another year because we don’t like to push them super-hard as 4-year-olds. All of his 4-year-old year, he just kept getting better and better with his work ethic and being on the pattern.” Thomas had a pretty big break from competition, since the C-N Futurity at the end of February until the PCR Pink Cadillac Futurity in Salina, Utah, mid-May. “We ran at a race in Scappoose, Oregon,” she said. “It was in a big outdoor pen on a (WPRA) Standard. That’s all we got to go to before we went to Utah.” Bailey said she was both surprised and not surprised with how well Thomas did at the two futurities. “I was surprised, but knowing Thomas, he’s always been wanting to please,” she said. “He’s always been a nice horse and pretty much a Rockstar since he got started. It did surprise me, but then it didn’t.

He always goes out there and works and he normally works good. It was just weird to me that he clocked as good as he did with the ground being different from what he’s used to. Our ground is more dirt and they can slide through it better. Down south, it’s just more clay and more sticky.” Bailey, 20, started running barrels when she was just 4. She com-peted in her first futurity three years ago with another homebred. She’s got a few more homebred coming up for the futurities includ-ing the young black stallion, Judge My Class, by Judge Cash out of Rubys Classy Biankus, by Captain Biankus. “It’s small, but we get it done,” she said of their humble breeding program. “Normally my mother decides, but occasionally she’ll ask my opinion if I’ve been involved with the horse.” She also has more by On The Gator in the pipeline. “We had bred two of our Judge Cash mares to him,” she said. “I really like the On The Gator I had last year. I really like the work ethic and willingness to please of the On The Gators. I decided this bred my good mare Cash Mia If U Can to Gator because I liked my Gator babies so much.”

By Sue Smith with Bonnie Wheatley I do a few different drills that I find to be helpful, the three-barrel drill being one of them. For this exercise I use three barrels set in a straight line about 30’ apart. Sometimes I leave the pattern set up with the three barrels for the drill set up within the pattern so I can modify what I’m doing depending on my objective.

Background for my drills In general I think a lot of barrel racers want to bend their horses too much. With that said, you’ve got to talk about the definition of bending and what all that entails because different riders apply that concept in different ways and to varying degrees. I personally don’t want my horses over bent to where the bend in their body impedes their engine, which is their hind end engaging to power through the turn. What I want is their ribcage open and their shoulder elevated with them not leaning on me, because if they’re not framed up cor-rectly the front legs get a little inside of the tracks that the hind end should take around the barrels. When riders hold their horse’s face too much to the inside and the horse dumps in it’s like there’s a false sense of shape for the turn. I think a lot of people have a tendency to micromanage their horses like this, myself included, so you have to be very conscious of what you’re doing and there’s a constant give and take. When you’re always holding up their face, horses get heavier in the frontend. What I want is for the horse’s front end to be reaching through the turn and them to be driving from behind at all times. That gives them impulsion through the turn because the hind end is engaged. A person can definitely overdo a drill. I’ve seen horses that are world champions at doing drills, but they didn’t have a great pattern on them. I want to use drills to build skills in my colts. I want to use my seat to get my horses moving forward into my hands and driving up underneath themselves. If you think about it there are more straight lines than circles in the barrel pattern, so I tend to ride a lot of squares on my horses, and it might look like I’m loping circles, but if you look at the straightness and the frame I ask for in my horses’ bodies I’m break-ing the circle into more of a series of straight lines, almost like an octagon shape. I want my horses elevated and open through the ribcage. I ask for that body position and when they do it I release and see how long the horse will stay framed up without me holding him together. Good training requires a lot of give and take with my hands to my seat working together. Another thing I do a lot of is I lope a lot of diagonals across the arena. I trot and lope a lot of straight lines across the arena and work into a square in the corner. I’ll ride in a straight line to one corner of the arena and move into a square asking my horse to open up his shoulder and follow his face. I then release him as a reward for performing the squares.

The Square and Three-Barrel Drills(Three Barrel Drill to the right; The Square Drill is on the following page) From the square exercise a lot of times I will transition to the three-barrel drill. I will add that I’ve had a lot of luck helping people by using this three-barrel drill. This exercise is especially useful with young horses because I think it really helps horses learn to make a better transition from a right handed turn to a left handed turn, like leaving first and going to second, which I believe this is the most difficult turn because of the angle from the first barrel to the second. This is the turn that seems to come last for my colts. I feel like I’m “there” when my colts will get into position leaving first and change their lead for the second. This three-barrel drill really helps them because it teaches them to lift their shoulder and move forward. So, for the three-barrel drill I go up one side of the three bar-rels—and you can stretch it out or narrow the distance between

the barrels depending on the horse, that’s up to your judgment—I just go up the side and then when I “corner” the barrel, it’s like I just ask the horse’s front feet to reach around an invisible corner. I

want their flank slightly past the barrel. It’s imperative to give horses enough room through the turns. I’ll stop when their flank is even with the barrel. I don’t turn the barrel as a circle, I just ask them to make the corner. I don’t hold them off the turn or drag them through the turn. I just position them to make the corner easily with their body positioned correctly, and I reinforce it through repetition. When they’re positioned correctly from the start, they tend not to get front-endy because they’re already in the right spot to make the corner. When they’re loading the hind end the way they’re sup-posed to, that in turn lightens the front end. Basically it’s a weave, I go from the last corner on the first barrel and then cross over to the opposite side of the middle barrel and ask them to change their diagonal at that point. Part of what makes this exercise really good is that I make them get their flank at the middle barrel before I ask them to change their diagonal and go another direction. I do this until they’re pretty proficient at it, and working smooth and fluid, then I work them the other direction. I call it good when they’re doing it well and I don’t over drill them. I make a point not to over drill or overwork, but I do make it to where if they make the right choice, they get a release. If they make the wrong choice, there’s consequence. Again, there’s a lot of give and take going on. I trot this exercise a lot at first. I’m riding a lot of colts and I want control of all four feet in the process. I want them to stay opened up through their ribcage, stay good on the corners and when I don’t have to help them much then I go on to another thing. It really depends on the horse how much repetition you do because some are more natural than others, some are more front-endy, some are more butt draggers. I try as much as I can to enhance whatever natural style that colt is inclined toward. Regardless of their style, I go about the drill the same way. When I am loping, sometimes I’ll lope bigger, softer circles around all three barrels going wider than normal and then I’ll pick a barrel and turn it, then go back out to loping my bigger circles. I do this so that my horse learns that when I drive with my seat, they turn and leave that barrel like they need to in a run. I find that especially with colts that second barrel is hard to get them opened up and running free in a straight line to it because of the angle of that turn being the hardest. I’m picky about letting them float off away from the barrel or block me out and move in, either one, because I want to eliminate all extra steps. Extra steps cost time in a run. I want my colts to be able to move forward, lift their shoulder and drive from behind. The three-barrel drill really helps.

How far along in training does my horse have to be for this type of pattern work? Number 1, I want them soft. If they’re not soft in their poll, they are not going to be soft in their feet or through their body. I want my horses broke as a barrel horse, period. I want one that’s soft in the poll, but that runs around the turn. I want them soft in their mouth, their face, their feet; then I can build from there. If I feel resistance as I’m working them I’m not going to compensate for that, I’m going to work on that even if I depart from the pattern or drill because I’ve got to have a horse working in frame, they must be correct through their body. With futurity horses, I think you have to put the training on them while making a point to have the least amount of resistance. You have to make a lot of this stuff the horse’s idea. If they make the right choice, they earn a release, if they make the wrong choice they pay a price.

Preferred headgear for this drill? It really depends on the horse and the day. I’ll use a snaffle or a draw bit. I like to get them in a bridle or something with a little slip to help them stay soft. It really depends on the horse because some of them are naturally stiffer and they need more arc, some are more bendy and they need to straighten up. For a horse with more

bend you can even go to something like a mullen with that type of a horse. A lot of people like a mullen mouthpiece and I’m not that big into them, but I know they can be a good option for a bendy type of horse. For something that’s got a lot of natural bend, I’ll use a bit with a little less slip too. You might have to change bits if they’re getting tighter in their ribs and you need more roundness, so it’s good to have some different bits to swap around.

By Tanya Randall Running third on the ground in the Friday morning slack, Aman-da Butler and TS Cinch Ta Fame (“Tic”) put more than 3/10ths on the field to earn the Cave Creek Rodeo Days barrel racing champi-onship in Arizona. Their victory at the $3,000-added Memorial Day weekend pro rodeo—the first since the nationwide shutdown mid-March due to COVID 19—was worth $2,025. Butler, along with countless others, appreciated the Cave Creek Rodeo committee’s efforts.I’m sure it was very difficult for them,” said Butler. “They had to do health screenings for everyone who entered. I’m sure it’s not exactly what they wanted to do but they still did what they could to put on a rodeo.” With COVID restrictions in place, the Cave Creek rodeo was quite different even beyond the health screenings. “It was very different, said Butler. “There were no fans and ev-eryone was warming up with a mask on. You couldn’t tell who any-body was. It was crazy. It was so hot. It was 80 degrees at 9 in the morning. I had big, cloth mask on and I was sweating. We couldn’t take our masks off until we were going in the arena. I just took it off and shoved it in my pocket. My mom couldn’t come video me. She drove all this way and couldn’t watch me run. She had to sit in the truck.” Although Utah didn’t really shutdown, many races were canceled. In May, they started having barrel races again. The weekend before Cave Creek, Butler and Tic dominated the open races at the South-

west Desert Classic in Salina, Utah, winning $4,709 after sweeping every race they entered. Her original plan for 2020 was to make a run for WPRA Rookie of the Year and take a shot at qualifying for the NFR. “I had really big hopes of making a run at the NFR this year,” she said. “It’s hard because of the restrictions, like with Prescott (Arizona), I don’t know if I have enough won to get in. Then all this came along and rodeos started getting shutdown and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just try for rookie.’ Now, it’s like, ‘Well, let’s go for rookie in the Wilderness Circuit and maybe make it to the (RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in) Florida. I just don’t know.” Butler didn’t hesitate to enter Cave Creek when she found out they were having it. “I was so happy to be rodeoing again,” she said. “I was a little nervous because it was an outdoor pen and my horse likes to go by the first barrel sometimes. I thought if I don’t get a good first bar-rel I’m not going to win anything because there were so many big names entered and they were probably all going to be riding their good horses. But, he turned the first barrel good and it was great!”

Butler partnered with Tic four years ago, when the gelding was just 7 and she was a sophomore in high school. Bred by Sterling and Shawna Smith, Tic is by all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of Shez Sucha Snap, by Sir Cashanova. Her parents Mark and Kim had previously purchased the gelding’s full sister TS Snapn Ta Fame (“Holly”) for Butler’s older sister Lauren. A year later, they went back to purchase Tic for Amanda. “When we tried Tic out, I didn’t really want to buy him because I was terrified of him,” laughed Butler, who is now a sophomore art education major at Utah Valley University in Orem. “I think my dad already had in his mind that he was going to buy him so I didn’t really get to choose my own horse. Looking back, I’m like that’s stupid that I didn’t want him. If I didn’t get him my life would completely different right now.” Butler and Tic collected two Utah High School Rodeo Barrel Racing Championships in 2018 and 2019. They were the 2018 Na-tional High School Rodeo Champions.She wanted to thank her parents “for sacrificing everything for me and my siblings” and she wanted to thank Tic.“I wish I could thank my horse and actually have him know I’m thanking him,” she said. “He’s definitely one in a million. I don’t think I’ll ever find another like him.”

The seven performances will have earnings that count toward the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Wrangler BFI Week moves to Lazy E Arena The cluster of team ropings with a collective $1.7 million payout goes, for 2020, back to the birthplace of team roping’s first six-figure paycheck. In just four weeks, Wrangler BFI Week will land temporarily in one of team roping’s most iconic arenas. “The coronavirus has closed a lot of doors and changed a lot of people’s lives forever,”

said Dan Wall, general manager of the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma – the na-tion’s largest indoor venue devoted exclusively to Western events. “Sometimes a door closes on one side and opens on the other. Reno’s unfortunate loss is our gain. It’s one of those things that fits like a glove.” The half-million-dollar Bob Feist Invitational – the world’s richest team roping for pros – and the half-million-dollar Wrangler Patriot 11.5 for amateurs (plus seven ad-ditional amateur ropings), were originally scheduled for June 20-25 in Reno, Nevada. When the coinciding Reno Rodeo this June was cancelled, roping organizers decided to relocate June 20-24 to the Lazy E Arena, on a ranch large enough to allow plenty of distancing. The 43rd BFI will be held on Sunday, June 21 instead of its traditional Monday, but will still follow its customary Saturday night welcome banquet. Entries for the BFI are due by June 12, and the prestigious event is limited to the first 125 paid teams. It will once again be live-streamed on WranglerNetwork.com. “This is where team roping really took off,” said BFI Week co-owner Daren Peterson. “Ed Gaylord built this arena for hard-running steers and long scores. The 440-foot arena itself, plus the camping and stalls are great for our ropers, and fans have always loved the vendors and the infamous Cantina overlooking the boxes.” Because of the late-date change in venue, additional entries will be taken on-site for the 9.5 and 10.5 Over 40 ropings, the 11.5 and 12.5 ropings, plus the Hooey Jr. BFI ropings and All-Girl challenge ropings – all of which have limited team counts. The Lazy E’s climate-controlled three acres under a roof were built 36 years ago to host the National Finals Steer Roping. Over the years, the arena also hosted performances by the likes of George Strait and Reba McEntire. The Lazy E is a working ranch, having stood stallions like Coup de Kas and Mr. San Peppy, with a roster today headlined by Corona Cartel – sire of racehorses that have earned $54 million. Owner Gary McKinney is a team roper, himself. “Mr. McKinney loves everything about the team roping industry, from the grassroots all the way to the elite level,” said Wall. “Ever since he bought the Lazy E in 2013, we’ve talked about how to create a Feist [Bob Feist Invitational] or a Strait [George Strait Team Roping Classic] or something of that nature.” It was the Lazy E’s long arena, popular cantina and television lights that made Denny Gentry choose it for the first-ever National Finals of Team Roping in 1990, because “everyone who swung a rope knew it was the premier roping facility in the U.S.” The event in Guthrie every October for five years helped the sport explode in popularity, as the Lazy E hosted the first team roping that paid winners $100,000 and the first event that paid out a collective million dollars. Today, the Lazy E continues to host the annual “Ironman” of professional rodeo in the bucket-list Timed-Event Championships of the World. It was held this year in March just as Oklahoma City became the epicenter of national pandemic closures when the NBA’s Thunder/Jazz game was called off just before tipoff. “We held one of the last major events before the lockdown and then we held one of the first sporting events back, when we partnered with the PBR to bring the Las Vegas Invitational and other CBS Sports broadcasts here last month,” said Wall. Wall credits the Lazy E’s intense safety protocols and unique property that allows quarantine of everyone on site with plenty of camping and limited access in and out. Plus, he said the governor has trusted Logan County leaders who want to bring busi-ness back to life in safe environments. “When the BFI news leaked out, we got so many calls about tickets and calls from vendors that we didn’t even have time to get the event listed on Ticketmaster,” said Wall. hair stands on end! I DON’T WANT A NEW NORMAL! I want to do the same thing, the same way and expect different results! LOL! We all know that’s the definition of insanity. Well, WHAT IF there is a new normal? WHAT IF this whole last two months is going to turn into the biggest blessing we’ve ever seen? Now, if Jesus is not your Lord, you will have to take what the world gives. As Christians, we are NOT subject to the world’s answers. God PROMISED us in Jere. 29:11 (AMPC version), “For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for YOU (put your name in there) says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace

and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.” Our future is bright. Listen, listen, listen, to what God is saying in your HEART! Not what the news is saying and not what you hear through your ears. Listen with your heart and He will guide you into your place of blessing!
