What suits India ? Democrats or Republicans

    Hardly makes a difference !

While a surfer said that it should not be a major concern any more because Democrats and Republicans, both would be interested in working with India since India is a big market and the US companies may want to use this market, another surfer said that issues such as countering China, the

Indo-Pacific, stronger defence and energy ties, growing economic relationship, combating terrorism, the present dynamism of the India-US ties will continue irrespective of who becomes the US president.

Yet another surfer said that victory of either – the Republicans or the Democrats – would hardly make much difference because in either case the US foreign policy towards India will be based on its national interest. “Personalities do play a role, but the deeper drivers of the India-US relations will be the evolution of the international situation, shifts in relations between US-India and others, economic considerations and those of defence and security”, he added.

“Also, regarding the immigration of Indians or outsourcing to India, both parties may consider the US interest first. (Those Indians who are already the citizens of the US also don't want that much of new immigration or outsourcing). Both parties may rise some noise regarding human rights violations (like religious violence, rapes, etc.,) in India, but these may not lead to any substantial actions”.

However, some of the surfers opined that Democrats would be better for India because US President Donald Trump is unpredictable, self-centred, disruptive and transactional. In his second

term, he could become more so. “Hence, Democrats will be more friendly with India than the Republicans who can't be taken for granted”.

    But that does not means that Republicans were t o t a l l y r e j e c t e d b y t h e s u r f e r s o f whispersinthecorridors.com. Republicans will be better said a surfer adding, “In my view, considering China's predatory tactics, Republicans will be better for India. They mince no words in calling a spade a spade and believe in taking the bull by its horns.

One more surfer opined that Republicans suit India. “Logically and reasonably, Republicans would be better suited to India irrespective of the past republicans Presidents horrenduos relations with India. The situation is changed now. USA, under Republicans, is feeling the heat from China economically and in the United Nations. It's, thus, in the USA 's interest to support India to counter China and that suits India too . Democrats on the other hand have a soft corner for China which is inimical to India.

ith the US elections drawing to a close, confusion prevails whether WDemocrats will suit India or Republicans. Given the present warmth in relation between the present heads of both nations – US and India – as never before, opinion is highly divided as to whose victory will be more beneficial for India in the days to come.

Immaterial : In recent years, Republican presidents like George W. Bush and Democratic ones like Barack Obama have been positive towards India, and that is an important perspective. Issues such as countering China, the Indo-Pacific, stronger defence and energy ties, growing economic relationship, combating terrorism, the present dynamism of the India-US ties will continue irrespective of who becomes the US president.

National interests supreme : The US foreign policy towards India will be based on its national interest, and the reverse is also true. Personalities do play a role, but the deeper drivers of the India-US relations will be the evolution of the international situation, shifts in relations between US-India and others, economic considerations and those of defence and security.

    Pradeep Choubey

Hardly any difference : Since the US foreign policy towards India will be based on its national interest, the deeper drivers

    of the India-US relations will be the evolution of the international situation, shifts in relations between US-India and others, economic considerations and t h o s e o f d e f e n c e a n d s e c u r i t y. Personalities do play a role but the victory of either in the upcoming US Polls, would hardly make much difference.

Hardly matters : India may not qualify for development aid. Hence Indians should not worry about the party which is more inclined to give such an aid. Regarding the immigration of Indians or outsourcing to India, both parties may consider the US interest first. (Those Indians who are already the citizens of the US also don't want that much of new immigration or outsourcing). Both parties may rise some noise regarding human rights violations (like religious violence, rapes, etc.,) in India, but these may not lead to any substantial actions. Presidents of the US and PMs of India may develop some friendly relationships irrespective of the persons who occupy these positions.

Debating US Election 2020 : The primary goal of any political party is to serve its people and party first. The ideology that the Democrats have been practising is too outdated now. The anti-India sections of the Democratic Party has always tried to spoil the relations between India and America whenever a Clinton or an Obama tried to warm up towards India. Biden's victory will not change the policy and attitude a bit irrespective of his public statements. On the contrary, the Republican Party has to ensure the American people live without fear of any kind. The geo-political situation in the world has not changed much since 2016. COVID-19 has affected all countries and America too has suffered. The threat from China remains the same as in 2016. My book “US Elections 2016 And After” (available on Kindle-Amazon) referred to the Chinese policy at that time. America cannot afford to experiment with failed socialist policies any longer as those professing socialism have converted it into a powerful lever to rule the poor masses – whether in America or India.M L Gupta

No major concern now :This should not be a major concern any more. Democrats and Republicans, both would be interested in working with India. Though India has poverty and underdevelopment, it is a big market. The US companies may want to use this market. Indian government can buy arms. These will increase the US interests in India.

Mahesh Manchanda My take if Democrats win in US election : In the event Joe Biden wins the US Presidential election, there shall be change of guards in two important ministries in India. Democrats would like to engage afresh with face without Republican baggage. President Trump has lost speed and direction with the result that Joe Biden has maintained convincing lead in the opinion poll.

    Sunil

Democrats would be better for India : U S President Donald Trump is unpredictable, self-centred, disruptive and transactional. In his second term, he could become more so. Forging a good personal equation with him does not guarantee protection against pressures. Trump, unlike the Democrats who emphasise human rights issues and minority rights in US foreign policy and could generate pressure on us, would be more manageable for India.

    Manoj Mehrotra

Only Democrats will come to power this time. Trump has done nothing for the US ,he only divided. Democrats will be more friendly with India than the Republicans.

Amit Pande Repubicans can't be taken for granted : President Donald Trump has a transactional approach to international relations but the core of the relationship always has a strategic dimension. Trump approaches foreign leaders like he would a potential customer for one of his properties. He flatters them and makes them feel good. He has done the same with Prime Minister Modi. But at the end of the day, Trump does not always look at long-term strategic partnerships as the way forward for the United States and thus he can't be taken for granted.

    Dr. Deepak Kumar

Democrat view India as a natural ally : Almost all the Democrats, so far, have shown an interest in a long-term strategic partnership between India and the US, based on shared values and the shared need to contain China, and managing a Free and Open Indo Pacific. Democrat leaders have viewed India as a natural ally, the strategic partner of c h o i c e a n d c h a r a c t e r i s e d t h e relationship as the defining partnership of the 21st century.

    PC Tiwari

Republicans will be better : In my view, considering China's predatory tactics, Republicans will be better for India. They mince no words in calling a spade a spade and believe in taking the bull by its horns. Words like bully , predators, China virus etc. show no diplomatic sophistry but are music to Indian ears.

    S Mishra

Republicans suit India : Logically and reasonably, Republicans would be better suited to India irrespective of the p a s t r e p u b l i c a n s P r e s i d e n t s horrenduos relations with INDIA. The situation is changed now. USA, under Republicans, is feeling the heat from China economically and in the United Nations. It's, thus, in the USA 's interest to support India to counter China and that suits India too . Democrats on the other hand have a soft corner for China which is inimical to India.

Rajeev Rastogi Republican is best : Republican is best for India and Indians.

    Anil Kumar

    Trump is unpredictable : U S P r e s i d e n t D o n a l d T r u m p i s u n p r e d i c t a b l e , s e l f - c e n t r e d , disruptive and transactional. In his second term, he could become more so. Forging a good personal equation w i t h h i m d o e s n o t g u a r a n t e e protection against pressures or erratic behaviour but Trump, unlike the Democrats - who emphasise human rights issues and minority rights in US foreign policy and could generate pressure on us, would be more manageable for India.

    Manoj Sachdeva

Republican V/s Democrat ? : As the US presidential election approach, the Indian-American friendship is at the cross roads. Whether the Republicans or Democrats come to power in the US, their national interests are supreme and permanent. This wi l l shape thei r fore ign pol icy. A comparative analysis.

First the Democrats. The Democrats have been very critical of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution and the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by Indian Parliament. They have also gone on to hold hearings against alleged “human rights violations” in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In doing s o , t h e y h a v e f a i l e d t o g i v e a n y consideration to the genocide of Kashmiri Hindus as also persecution of the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christian minorities in India's neighbours : the Islamic Republics of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Indian diaspora's initial enthusiasm with Kamla Harris's nomination as Vice President, fizzled out soon. She hardly ever claimed her Indian ancestry overtly. So, let us not read too much into her nomination as Vice President even though, historically, the Indian diaspora in the US has been a loyal supporter of the Democrats. Now, the Republicans. The US foreign policy towards India, as always, will be based on its national interest. Personalities definitely play an important role.Let me be upfront. President Trump is perceived as unpredictable, self-centred, disruptive and transactional. In his second term, he could possibly become more so. PM Modi has invested hugely on Indo-US friendship. Any change of guard in the US, at present juncture, ill be disastrous for India nay the whole world. This will merely help China in actualizing its expansionist designs. India will be the worst affected.Trump's appearance at the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston and subsequently a mammoth rally in India with PM Modi have solidified his pro- India image. Personal bonding between them is unprecedented. Ties must be strengthened, regardless of whether the next president is a Democrat or Trump 2.0. Let us explore all opportunities. All things considered, the Republicans would be a better bet for India. The Democrats, the general perception is, lean towards the Left. Joe Bidon, the Presidential nominee had once criticised India's CAA and National Register of Citizens in an outreach to Muslim Americans.
