YES Network Bulletin TeamIt is our great honor to invite submissions to the first edition of the YES Network Bulletin. The submission deadline is September 30, 2011. The fundamental aim of the YES Network Bulletin is to publish con-tributions pertaining to aspects of earth sciences, providing a timely forum to the advancement of the entire field. The YES Network Bulletin is published twice per year, in July and December. Papers must be original, and will present data, interpretations and/or syntheses that are unpublished and/or have not been submitted elsewhere. If accepted, the papers become copyright of the YES Network.~ The Editorial Board

YES-USA (from Heather Houlton) I’m the new webmaster and social media coordinator for the YES Network- USA Chapter!

If you haven’t visited the YES Network’s USA Chapter website yet, please check out our new posts and let me know if you have any news to share. The USA YES Net-work website is http://yesnetworkusa.blogspot.com/

I also just created a Facebook page for us at: www.facebook.com/pages/YES-Network-USA-Chap-ter/173983572669198! If you “Like” our USA page, you can join in on the conversation of new things going on in the community, post comments and post pictures too!

We have lots of YES Network activities going on at the SSSA2011, GSA2011 and AGU2011 meetings this year, and I’ll be keeping the YES-USA website updated with information on these events. We have many things that we’ll be planning, so stay tuned!

YES Network Member ShowcaseWhat are you studying or where do you work?

I recently accepted a position as the Workforce Develop-ment, Education and Outreach Specialist with the Ameri-can Geological Institute.

How did you become interested in the geo-sciences?

I was an undergraduate at the University of Colorado in Boulder where I was studying astronomy/planetary sci-ences. I took some intro geology courses and started do-ing Geoscience Education Research with some of the post-docs there. After I graduated with my Bachelor’s, I went on to get my Master’s at Purdue University where I studied the reasons why students decide to major in the geosciences and what career paths they intend on pursuing.

Why did you join the YES Network?

I joined the YES Network to promote the geosciences as a whole and to initiate communication with geoscientists all around the world. I would like to become involved in YES Network activities and conferences, in the USA and internationally.

How is your research or work relevant to society?

I work to understand how to recruit and retain students into the geosciences. This is important for the future of the geoscience discipline because there is a high demand for our profession and very few people to meet that increas-ing demand. I hope to increase participation and aware-ness of the geosciences to the community and to empha-size the importance of our field to the greater population.

What activities are you involved in with the YES Network and/or what YES Net-work activities would you like to become more involved with?

I just took over the role of the YES Network, USA Chap-ter’s webmaster! I am very excited to take on this respon-sibility and hopefully increase visibility and membership of the USA chapter.

Research and Project Collaborations

YES Network: Geomicrobiology InitiativePunyasloke Bhadurywww.yesgeomicrobiology.blogspot.com/Email: [email protected] the last decade the interdisciplinary domain of Geo-biology including geomicrobiology has generated plenty of interests among geologists, earth scientists and biolo-gists. New discoveries in geomicrobiology has significantly changed the way we think about the origin and evolution of life on earth. YES Geomicrobiology is an initiative of YES Network to motivate early-career geoscientists to pur-sue research in geobiology and also encourage collabora-tion amongst geologists, geochemists microbiologists and environmental scientists.

Updated Decision Points SurveyJo Venus and Leila Gonzaleswww.networkyes.org/index.php/projects/descision_points_survey/Thank you to all who participated in the YES Network’s Decision Points Survey. We got a lot of feedback from our survey participants and had several good discussions with-colleagues at the AGU 2010 Fall Meeting in December. Based on these discussions, we have updated the survey to be more extensive to better capture information about why people stay in or leave the geosciences. If you have not yet taken the updated survey, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey today.

Do you have an idea that you’d like to develop with other YES Network members? Send a brief description of your research or project idea and your contact information (name and email) to [email protected].
