YEARLY REGISTER ORGANISED BODIES In this class of work the Africans proved their worth. The King congratulated them, the Field Marshals of the Allies praised them. Their discipline left nothing to be desired. More and more Africans were required, and more and more Africans crossed the ocean, but not all reached their destination. No, not all. Some were destined to have a watery grave, for the 5.5. M\ndt G went down in the ocean with many hundreds on board. But they had answered the call, and proved themselves men. In France the climate was extremely trying to the sons of Sunny Africa, but they maintained the merry disposition that is so characteristic of the . Africans. But there, too, they died, and many of them lie buried in France where their friends and relatives will never have the privilege o f seeing their graves. Can it still be said, even in a military sense, that the South African native has not played his part in world politics alongside his white coutrymen? NATIONAL CONGRESS OF BRITISH WEST AFRICA. The National Congress of British West Africa is the leading political organisation of the Africans in West Africa. It was estab- lished a number of years ago and has fought many battles for the chiefs and people of West Africa. It has sent, on more than one occasion, distinguished deputations to His Majesty King George and the British Parliament. The General Secretary is Mr. Samuel Richard Wood. PENNY SAVINGS AND INVESTMENT SOCIETY. \ The Penny Savings and Investment Society was founded by Rev. Mbangela, of the Congregational Church, in 1922. He had estab- lished a similar society some years previous at Kimberley. So good were the results of this experiment that the proposal of starting a similar society in Johannesburg met with general approval. The present directors are: Messrs. T . B. Ntlebi, J. Bendile, Qodashe and E. F. Venna, secretary. The society has no paid staff. The directors meet weekly. The savings are banked at one of the local banks. The funds are increasing and loans have been made to many people on a reasonable rate of interest. 437

'The U inteteli zva Bantu is a weekly journal published in Johannes­burg by the Native Printing and Publishing Company, under the direction o f the Native Recruiting Corporation, and has a wide circulation. W hile it has been denounced by some as a European- controlled paper, it is certainly read by the race leaders and other progressive men in South A frica . was form ed 'in 1912 on the instruction o f the Queen Regent Nabotsibeni o f Swaziland, and under the direction o f Dr. P. KaI. Seme, with a capital o f £ 3 ,0 0 0 . T his company published the Abantu-Batho newspaper which became the official organ of the African National Congress. It has been instrumental in killing tribal friction among the natives. It has also inspired the Africans to greater things. A t one time the Abantu-Batho was the biggest and most w idely read paper among Africans in South A frica . It is printed in English, Zulu, Xosa and Sesuto-Secoana. It is circu­lated through the U nion o f South A frica and Territories, Rhodesia, the C ongo, England and America. It became the property o f the A frican National Congress in 1928 during the presidency o f M r.J. T . G um ede. In 1929 M r. G um cde became sole proprietor o f Abantu-Batho. At the beginning o f 1931 the A frican and Indian T rading Association, L im ited, acquired the newspaper with plant complete from M r. G um ede.

W hen the Prince o f Wales visited A frica , he was w elcom ed by all sections o f the com m unity. T h is was especially true o f the Natural Rulers and Chiefs o f the A fricans, w h o congregated at the provincial capitals to w elcom e the heir and great-grandson o f distinguished w hite lady, the late Queen Victoria, from w hom a number o f them sought protection from their enemies. Thousands o f A fricans congregated on each occasion, and it was the b e lie f o f m any that H is Royal H ighness had brought them freedom . Some chiefs the Prince decorated with the K in g ’ s M edal, others he presented with gold -topped canes. A number o f pictures here show the Prince m eeting these Royal Sons o f A frica at various centres. In A frica the Prince o f Wales, received a real Royal reception.
