Our new strategy to help us solve equations is called the:

column method

Adults here is a video introducing the column method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fab1g--_BLI 'First introduction to column addition'

1. Remember what the numbers represent by looking at which column they are in – tens or ones. Write the equation you are solving.

31 + 27 =

2. Add the ones numbers in the ones column together and write the total number of ones in the empty square underneath.

3. Add your groups of tens together from the tens column and write how many tens you have altogether in the empty box underneath.

If you would like to, you can even draw your dienes to help you when completing addition using the column method. Draw these in a separate place value grid.

T OWhen adding the numbers in the ones column, these add up to more than 10.

We must regroup ten of these ones and exchange them for an extra ten!

So that we don't forget this extra ten, we have written how many extra tens we have in the tens column.

The remaining ones are written in the ones column.

1. Add your ones numbers together:8 + 4 = 12. 12 is made up of one ten and two ones.

2. Represent your ones number in the ones column.

3. Remember to write down the extra group of ten that you exchanged into the tens column.

4. Add your tens numbers together:3 tens and 1 ten = 4 tens, add the extra ten I carried over and I have 5 tens.

5. 38 + 14 = 52

So we must regroup so that we can subtract the ones efficiently.

If we don't have enough ones to subtract from, we need to regroup our first number.

We know that 40 can be made up of 3 tens and 10 extra ones.

We must represent this in our columns. We haven't changed the amount, we have just partitioned it in a different way.

Now we can solve our equation.10 ones – 8 ones = 2 ones3 tens – 1 ten = 2 tens

Here are some instructions on how to do it.

1. Write your equation into the column grid.

2. Subtract your ones first0 – 7 = ?

3. Regroup your whole number so that you have ten ones in your ones column. Remember to check your tens column.

4. Subtract your ones.

5. Subtract your tens.

6. Identify the answer.
