The new guidelines released by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) state that “[h]igh blood pressure should be treated earlier with lifestyle changes and in some patients with medication – at 130/80 mm Hg rather than 140/90.” This said guidelines aim to lower the risk of heart-related conditions and complications as early as possible. STRETCHING TO POWER UP YOUR DAY There are 3 types of exercises: aerobic, strengthening, and stretching. Stretching exercises have multiple benefits ranging from injury prevention to reducing stress levels. When done properly and on a regular basis stretching exercises can: 1. Improve the range of motion of the joints 2. Increase blood circulation and oxygen delivery throughout the body 3. Reduce muscle tension 4. Improve general flexibility Maintain the stretched position for 10-15 seconds. Repeat 2-3 times per stretch and do not push yourself too hard. Start with the most tolerable position then slowly increase the level of intensity and extent of the stretch after every few sessions. THE DENTAL HYGIENE KIT EVERY SEAFARER MUST HAVE Dental care is an essential part of personal hygiene. Neglect of one’s teeth can have serious consequences on your health and ability to work optimally. An annual check-up with your own dentist prior to your pre-employment medical exam is also advised to have any dental conditions treated and to undergo the recommended oral prophylaxis every 6 to 12 months to have your teeth thoroughly cleaned. It is best to bring at least 2-3 pieces of each item in your dental hygiene kit when you are at sea. 1. Toothbrush In choosing a toothbrush, pick one with medium or soft bristles. The bristles are important because they should cover both gums and teeth, and should not splay easily. Brushing your teeth should take two minutes and cover the inside and the back of your teeth. Replace your toothbrush every three months. 2. Fluoride toothpaste Fluoride can help prevent demineralization and decalcification of the teeth. It builds the tooth’s defense against the bacteria that causes plaque build-up and decay. 3. Mouthwash Mouth rinse or mouthwash can help prevent the development of cavities and buildup of plaque. By using therapeutic mouthwash, you benefit from healthy gums and reduced bacteria in your mouth. It also has active ingredients that protect you from oral and throat diseases. 4. Floss or interdental brush Floss is capable of reaching places your toothbrush may not be able to when brushing your teeth. The spaces between your teeth and their bases can develop cavities when plaque and small food particles are not removed. However, PHA President Dr. Jorge Sison maintained that the report was based primarily on Caucasian Americans who have bigger builds than Asians. Therefore, the findings may not be applicable to the Asian profile. He added that further studies will be conducted to determine if the guidelines are applicable to Filipinos. It is estimated that 75% of Filipinos diagnosed with hypertension are getting treatment. However, of those undergoing treatment only 27% have adequate blood pressure control. “Hypertension is the leading cause of death globally, including the Philippines. It affects the heart, brain, blood vessels, and the eyes—I have patients who have gone blind because of high blood pressure,” Dr. Sison said in a news article.
