A Letter From Our Executive Director
INVESTING IN CHANGE
If I have learned anything in the past 16 years as Executive Director of the NTCA, it is that everything is subject to change. There is no crystal ball or magic wand that will help us determine what needs to be done to help our association make a bigger impact on our industry. It takes vision, leadership at many levels, and dedication from staff and volunteers to help us continue to make a positive effect on our trade and our industry. At the NTCA, we are fortunate to have all of this working in our favor.
As our membership reaches new heights, we have invested our resources by adding industry leaders with technical, marketing, and education and curriculum development experience. This investment will pay dividends because we know that after 70 years of being an association leading change, one thing remains the same – the NTCA is an association that focuses on education, training and best practices.
Because the industry faces many new challenges, we will venture into new territory with apprenticeship development, career and trade promotion, and retention strategies. We believe these programs will help us continue to provide value to our members and contribute to the growth of the tile industry.
The NTCA supports the tile industry by offering physical and internet-based training programs and supporting the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) in certification testing and educational seminars. Our members volunteer as voting members in revising and introducing new standards and methods, participating in trade show conference programming, and business development strategies.
No matter how things change, some things remain the same. The NTCA was established on the principles of best practices, networking, and collaboration to promote the trade and the industry. We will continue to invest all of our resources to make this happen.

WELCOMING SUCESS & NEW CHALLENGES
Welcome to Total Solutions Plus 2018 as we celebrate the 71st year of the National Tile Contractors Association. Throughout this notable history, many milestones have been achieved. As you will read throughout this annual report, the staff and volunteers have been hard at work developing and creating benefits that will increase the value of membership many times over. I’d like to highlight just a few of the most important new developments in 2018:
• Customized regional training for members only • Expanded technical staff• 24-hour telephone technical support to all members • Updated NTCA University website platform makes the apprenticeship training program
easier to use • First year installer course and 2-year finisher course completed in NTCA University• The Executive Committee, together with Executive Director Bart Bettiga, have created
an updated and expanded organizational flow chart which identified two new positions that were needed to ensure effective service to the members and continue to improve the recognition and voice of the NTCA in the industry: Avia Haynes as Director of Marketing and Stephanie Samulski, Director of Technical Services.
Members are bringing their energy and passion to the Board of Directors and subcommittees as they work to develop programs to support the growth and health of our tile contractor members. But there’s still work to do on the many challenging issues that will test our resolve and unity in the future -- a key problem being the craft-worker shortage. Every tile contractor I talk with can’t find enough trained or untrained workers to fill their installation needs, which helps enable competing products like LVT to take a bite out of the ceramic tile and stone market share. Together with internal and external partners, we are developing recruitment materials to help members spread the message that the tile trade is a good career choice. And the NTCA Apprenticeship Program is an excellent solution, designed to give our members the opportunity to consistently train and educate employees and invest in the future of our trade.
2018 has been a very positive year for the NTCA and we are in good position to continue growing for years to come. Increase your investment in NTCA by getting more involved: we need your ideas and participation. I invite you to talk with any of the staff or volunteers serving as board members, state ambassadors, or subcommittee members and tell us what your passion is!
Thank you for entrusting us with the responsibility to serve and we look forward to working with you next year.
Keep on tiling!
Martin Howard

What is the NTCA?
OUR PURPOSEEstablished in 1947, the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) is a nonprofit trade association dedicated to the professional installation of tile and natural stone. We strive to improve the tile installation trade through education and training, the development of standards and methods, and communication of our initiatives to related trades.
As a leading force in tile installation education, each year the NTCA develops and leads over 100 workshops and training programs. We also assist in the development of local apprenticeship programs, and offer our members an online education module and technical assistance. In an effort to elevate the trade, the NTCA makes a significant contribution in funding and resources to support the development of tile installation certification, managed by the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF).
To promote and develop the industry, the NTCA delivers two publications – TileLetter and the NTCA Reference Manual. TileLetter
magazine is an industry news publication produced 13 times a year, along with two special editions. The NTCA Reference Manual, a highly-valued trade publication, is a comprehensive culmination of knowledge, research and development that identifies recurring installation challenges, recognizes potential problems, and offers expert solutions.
We sponsor or promote three major annual events – Coverings Global Tile & Stone Experience, Total Solutions Plus, and The International Surface Event (TISE West). These events provide networking opportunities, educational seminars, hands-on demonstrations, and a collective view of industry products.
At the NTCA, we believe through our efforts, members and partner relationships, we will increase the availability of qualified installers and raise consumer and the construction industry’s awareness of the craftsmanship, importance and necessity of certified tile and stone installers.

Growth, Training, and Education
2018 TRIUMPHSIt took over 20 years (1995-2015) for the NTCA to grow our association from 500 to 1,000 members. It took only three years (2015-2018) for us to increase membership from 1,000 to 1,500 companies in good standing with our association. Strong and sustained leadership at the executive and board level, coupled with a professional, experienced staff with a proven track record in the ceramic tile industry, is a primary reason for this growth. In addition to increasing membership, NTCA has been able to expand its outreach in the industry, both nationally and internationally, through the publication of TileLetter Magazine and the NTCA Reference Manual.
Over the last three years, we have seen considerable growth. In 2018, we
welcomed our 1,500th member.
One of the most important initiatives the association prides itself on is the development of training programs that contribute to the professional installation of ceramic tile and natural stone tiles. For over 35 years, NTCA technical trainers have traveled extensively in the U.S.A. and beyond to offer educational workshops and seminars. In 2018, we offered a new service, the NTCA Regional Training Program, available exclusively to the members of our association. Regional training programs for installers were developed to help contractors implement best installation practices for their superintendents, estimators, project managers, and tile setters. These programs were developed to address changing technology and to reinforce a commitment to adhere to national and international standards. The NTCA Regional Training Program will expand in 2019.
Several years ago, NTCA leaders saw the need to invest in learning management software to offer internet-based training and education programs. With this resource, the association could significantly expand our outreach to inform and educate industry professionals on the installation, sales, project management, specification and design of ceramic tile and natural stone. That learning system–NTCA University–currently has over 600 registered users actively taking courses. In fact, over 5,000 courses have been completed since January alone!
A complete apprenticeship curriculum is a primary element offered on NTCA University. Currently, we are able to offer these courses to contractor members, who in turn, can provide classroom and jobsite experience and submit this for approval from the Department of Labor. In the future, we are hoping that NTCA will be approved as an administrator of the program, and we will then be able to help our members recruit and retain workers without having to submit a program on their own.

This year, we launched a new training series exclusively to members, the NTCA Regional Training Program.

NTCA University has seen measurable success and continues to grow.

Financials
COMMITTED TO HEALTHY GROWTHWe are committed to serving the ceramic tile industry as a successful, not-for-profit trade association. Our success is dependent upon a highly-qualified and professional staff, coupled with a dedicated group of association leaders and volunteers. For the past several years, NTCA’s financial position has continued to improve under this leadership. A few highlights we are proud of include the following:
• In line with our member growth, we have seen significant financial gains in the last three years. It took 20 years to increase revenue from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. In the past three years, our revenue has seen an increase from $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.
• As the association has realized success, the Board of Directors has diligently approved the continued recruitment of a highly-trained, professional staff. In 2005, NTCA had five full-time employees working out of our corporate office in Jackson, Mississippi. Today, the association has 14 full-time and three part-time employees, with many individuals working from home offices in strategic regional locations throughout the United States.
As our association continues to reach new financial targets, we commit to use these resources to provide increased membership value in the further development of programs and services, business and technical support, and active marketing and promotion of our members.
NTCA is proud of what we have achieved in the past several years, and we look forward to making an even bigger impact in 2019 and beyond.

Hand-in-hand success
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORTNTCA would not have seen the success it has had this year without the tremendous support of the industry. Association partnerships, remarkable tradeshow attendance, and the continued generosity of our sponsors afforded us opportunities to provide more value for our members and the industry. With these opportunities, we invested in additional staff in strategic areas such as technical services, marketing and communications, and curriculum development. This investment should pay dividends through the continuation of membership growth and retention.
Thank you to all who support our staff, members, programs, and mission. With your help, NTCA will continue to grow and promote the importance and necessity of qualified labor.

2019 Outlook
MAKING PLANSAs Executive Director of NTCA since 2002, I can say with honesty that I have never been more excited about an upcoming year like I am for 2019.
I realize our industry and our association is facing many challenges; such as a real qualified labor shortage and strong, fierce competition coming from competitive industries. The reason for my optimism is that I believe NTCA is uniquely qualified to assume a leading role in our industry to meet these challenges head on.
Our association has invested our resources by adding highly professional industry leaders to our staff so we can play a pivotal role in meeting industry objectives. NTCA is committed to working with our contractor members and associate partners to make a difference in the following areas:
• Career recruitment and retention• Craftsmanship development and training• Increased market share for the ceramic tile industry• Certification preparation and promotion• Installation standards and international collaboration
These five initiatives highlight a carefully thought out association strategic plan, updated and approved by the NTCA Board of Directors and Executive Committee. As the association continues to grow and develop, our responsibility to help grow the industry increases. Many of these objectives are newly established and will take time to develop. It will also take support from our contractor and associate members.
I am more convinced than ever before that NTCA will be able to meet this challenge now and in the future, and our entire staff looks forward to the opportunity.
Bart A. Bettiga
