Review – Attempt the following multiple choice questions to test your understanding of quantitative secondary data are available to sociologists

• 1) Official statistics are produced by non-government bodies such as banks and charities. Using them can save time and money – True or False?

• 2) Pre-existing quantitative data collected by other researchers is available, cheap to access and may save time. Many data sets (such as the Millennium Cohort Study) are high quality and be used in longitudinal research – True or False?

• 3) There are potential problems with using statistics collected by other researchers or organisations. For example, the researcher has no control over the way the data was collected or the quality of the data, and there is no guarantee that the data will cover all of the variables that the researcher is interested in – True or False?

Other ideas

• Produce one flashcard on non-official statistics

• Produce one flashcard on using quantitative data collected by other researchers

• Advantages of using existing quantitative data for secondary analysis

• Limitations of using existing quantitative data

Key terms

Anonymity Anonymity is one form of confidentiality – that of keeping participants' identities secret.

Confidentiality Confidentiality refers to a condition in which the researcher knows the identity of a research subject, but takes steps to protect that identity from being discovered by others.

Informed consent Informed Consent is a voluntary agreement to participate in research. It is not just a form that is signed but is a process, in which the subject has an understanding of the research and its risks.

Review – Attempt the following multiple choice questions to test your understanding of the sorts of ethical issues that arise during the research process

• 1) Ethical guidelines help sociologists to carry out morally acceptable research that protects the rights of participants, their interests and their wellbeing – True or False?

• 2) Guidelines cover issues such as informed consent, anonymity, privacy and confidentiality – True or False?
