#SUSTAINABLEXMASWe are looking for articulate and ambitious individuals to represent our school in a fantastic competition. For Christmas 2019, AheadPartnership are launching #SustainableXmas with the support of Leeds City Council and three of the major shopping retail developers in the city; Hammerson, Landsec and Town Centre Securities.

The 12 selected participants will be challenged to create their own initiative to help local businesses and their customers to use fewer resources this Christmas.

Launching in October at Market Gravity, pupils will work with business volunteers from The Victoria Quarter and Victoria Gate, Trinity Leeds and Merrion Shopping Centres to understand consumer behaviour, sustainability in business and community impact.

In November, pupils will be pitching their ideas to a panel of industry judges in an exciting Dragons' Den-style final and the winning ideas will be shared across social media and the businesses of Leeds.

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES 2019

Did you know that together at our school we speak over 60 languages?

We are extremely privileged to belong to a community with such a rich diversity of language and culture!

The Modern Foreign Languages department are taking the opportunity to celebrate the importance of languages by marking the European Day of Languages, which takes place on the 26th September every year.

It is a European-wide celebration! Here are some of the things to look out for, either on the day, or during that week:

That title is slightly over the top. You can’t go to infinity, and certainly not beyond. However, you must do more than just go to lessons if you want to fulfil your potential. We provide many opportunities for you to stretch yourselves and make the most of your ability.

Further Learning is vital. Make sure you complete this regularly. The booklets are designed to match the AREs and PQEs that you study, and to ensure you can close the gaps. The work at KS4 includes revision, flipped learning to prepare you for what’s coming and exam preparation – it is essential.

Flexible Learning and intervention / revision after school is invaluable, especially for pupils at KS4. Get answers to the questions that come into your mind after a lesson. Get time, focused and precise time, to talk and learn about a specific aspect of a course.

Develop your confidence and resilience. Develop the habit of being truly independent and self-motivated.

Focus on the things you like least. It is easy to do more of what you do like, and hard to do more of what makes you feel anxious and fearful.

Lean into the things you are scared of. Take charge of the topics, skills and subjects that worry you. Own it.

Change will not come from above.

Mr Dunford

Well done to ES in Year 9, who handed in some excellent Geography Further Learning that he’d completed over the holidays.

It looks amazing and Miss Wlodarczyk was very impressed!

TO INFINITY

The Night Spinner is a fantastical story of adventure that will fill you with adrenaline and joy!

Deep within Tanglefern Forest, Moll Pecksniff and her wildcat, Gryff, are waiting for a sign from the Old Magic before they continue their quest to find the last Amulet of Truth and free their world from the Shadowmasks’ terrible magic.

Still missing fellow Tribe member, Alfie, and armed only with a mysterious set of clues, Moll sets out on an adventure across the northern wilderness with Gryff and her friend Siddy at her side. They must brave the Lost Isles, scale the Barbed Peaks and face witches, goblins and giants who lurk at every turn... while the Shadowmasks draw ever closer.

Can Moll, Siddy and Gryff find the friend they think they have lost? And do the Tribe have what it takes to defeat the Dark magic once and for all?

Highly recommended by one of our new Year 7s. Here’s what they had to say about it:

“I like this book because just when you think the characters have finally figured out the plot of the story, they’re plunged into the dark once more. So many things happen at once, like Aira and Moll losing Gryff to a goblin with a crazy cage; Siddy being kidnapped; Orbrot opening the threshold. Too many to name!

BOOKREVIEW

The Night Spinnerby Abi Elpinstone

I love this book so much that I made a document on my computer of how much I loved it. I still love it - and I don’t let anybody borrow my copy because they’ll ruin it or they won’t give it back!”

KS3 ART CLUB Year 8 pupils have been leading sessions on their specialist skills to Year 7s.

Thank you to AM, FH and FC for leading a session on calligraphy this week.

The results looked fabulous!

If you have a skill you'd like to share, Art Club is on a Tuesday in S6 from 3-4pm.

PRIMARY PHASE UPDATE

RECEPTIONFirstly, a huge welcome to our new Reception class - we have had a brilliant first couple of weeks getting into the way of Reception life, working on our classroom routines and getting used to school life. This term, Reception’s Big Question will be focusing on ‘What can we celebrate about us?’ We will be exploring a range of different things such as what makes us all different and why we celebrate that. We will be linking our Big Question to different focus books throughout the term, the first one being, ‘Starting School’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The first main focus in Maths is the power of 1, investigating all things to do with the number one, exploring the formation of the numeral one, how we can make the number one, the word one and looking at all of them having the same value using a range of practical resources.

YEAR 1We are so proud of the Year 1 Puffins and Lions - they have all settled in really well to Year 1. They have shown a great attitude towards learning! Our Topic this half term is, ‘What Can We Celebrate About Us?’ and as part of this we have been creating some self-portraits. In English we have been reading ‘So Much’ and looking at what makes a sentence. In Maths we have been learning what teen numbers are and practising forming our numbers correctly. Why not have a go at home? Keep up the amazing work!

YEAR 2Welcome back Year 2 and what a brilliant first couple of weeks we have had!The Flamingos and Pandas have really enjoyed getting to know their new classrooms, classes and teachers. We have kick-started our topic learning with some amazing self-portraits and recently moved onto learning all about Rosa Parks. Year 2 have shown a keen interest in this topic, discussing how it makes them feel and the events which happened in the Bus Boycott. In English, we are reading ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’. We have enjoyed using our new ‘Mighty Writer’ board to retell the story and have enjoyed showing our acting skills through role play. In Maths, we will be focusing on place value for the next few weeks. Keep up the fantastic work year 2!

YEAR 3It has been a fantastic first two weeks in Year 3. The children in Mr Grealish’s class and Miss Moore’s class have enjoyed exploring their brand new classrooms. Children have enjoyed swimming for the first time and have started PE with the Secondary Phase teachers. A reminder that PE is always on a Tuesday and kits are required. In English this half term we are covering traditional tales and looking at the story of Hansel and Gretel. In Maths the children have been busy studying place value and practising their two, five and ten times tables. It is most important that children practise their tables every week. In Science this half term we will be exploring what keeps us going and looking at different types of nutrition and how the human skeleton keeps us upright. For our Big Learning Question we are exploring all about us before moving on to look at Arthur France and the creation of the Leeds Carnival. Here children will get the opportunity to make colourful carnival costumes and celebrate with carnival dancing. Modern Foreign Languages will continue this year with French being taught to all Year 3 pupils. A fantastic start to the half term - keep it up Year 3, we are extremely proud of you.

YEAR 4Welcome back Year 4!We hope you’ve had an amazing summer holiday, been on adventures, read heaps of books, enjoyed the few moments of good weather and got some well-earned rest! We’re hitting the ground running in Year 4; our Koalas and Dolphins have already started their first topic - “What was Martin Luther King’s dream?” which has led to some great conversations in the classroom, especially when talking about segregation in schools! We feel so lucky that we can look around our classrooms and have children who have families from all around the world - we have so many different languages spoken in Year 4 alone. We know now the benefits of integration and acceptance, so looking back only a few decades to all the troubles people faced because of the colour of their skin is really interesting. This year we will be the first year group to tackle the national times table test, so make sure you practise as often as you can outside school. There are plenty of different websites that can help along with good old fashioned games you can play with friends and family to help you remember those multiplication facts.

YEAR 5Welcome back, Year 5! It’s been a great start back at school for Year 5 who have been really excited to see the new school building. We have really enjoyed being upstairs on the second floor and our classroom is starting to feel like home already! Our topic is ‘What can we celebrate about us?’ and as part of Black History Month we will be learning about Mohammed Ali. We have been enjoying our lessons in the Secondary Phase where we’ve been learning about weaving in D&T, minimalism in Music, and football in PE amongst many other exciting lessons. Keep up the great attitude, Year 5!

YEAR 6We welcome back our new Year 6s this week. It has been a pleasure for the new staff in the Primary Phase to get to know them and I know it has been lovely for their previous teachers to see them again. Over the last two weeks, we have been learning about slavery, in particular the story of Henry “Box” Brown, who mailed himself from a tobacco warehouse in Virginia to Philadelphia. We have also been setting up new routines and learning more about the expectations of a Year 6 child at Carr Manor Community School. Finally, I know we have all found it to be an amazing experience moving into the new classrooms and we look forward to all the learning we will be doing here!

TABLE TENNISDo you fancy taking part in table tennis in the Theatre during morning/lunch breaks from Monday to Friday?

There's space for 25 pupils to take part in each session.

If interest is high, I am willing to put on extra sessions after school, and also look for two teams who may wish to take part in competitions after school.

All years are welcome.

Thank you

Mr Winn

Last week there was a fantastic netball practice, with 38 pupils present!

This is brilliant to see and we hope to see you all again next week!

Mrs Pedley

Congratulations to KO who has recently
