Year 9 Manga and Manga Portraits

Manga is a diverse and popular art form in which artists tell stories through pictures and words. Japanese

manga artists find inspiration for their work in daily life, the world around them, and also in the ancient

past. Many people are familiar with modern manga, but the art form – with its expressive lines and images –

is much older than you might think.

Modern manga is a global phenomenon, but its roots stretch back further than

Kawanabe Kyōsai, stage curtain for the Shintomi Theatre 30 June 1880.

That day, after consuming a few bottles of rice wine, Kyōsai

retreated to a studio and started painting. Four hours later

he emerged with 17 meters of painted curtain, depicting the

members of the acting company as various kinds of

monsters. Kyōsai’s homage to the actors created a

sensation. His spontaneous wit and expressive line stand at

Manga comes from 'man' and 'ga' and means crazy sketches or irresponsible pictures.

The word Manga is now in the English dictionary and means Japanese comics (the word for Jap-

anese animation is 'anime'). For the last several centuries, it's been part of Japanese culture to

tell stories using several images displayed in sequence. t's really hard to say what could have

been the first manga ever. Some say that the 18th century illustrated book called kibyoshi could

qualify has being the first one. But one thing is almost certain, the word manga has probably

been used for the first time at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries,

illustrations were made on wood block and already, they could be very detailed using various
