Year 9 I/T Elective
Criminal activity which uses or takes place through communications technology, including the Internet, telephony and wireless technology.[Taken from: PARLIAMENTARY JOINT COMMITTEE ON THE AUSTRALIAN CRIME COMMISSION - “CYBERCRIME” - March 2004]
The ACC identifies three kinds of offences which involve the use of communications technology, including the Internet:1. The first kind is an offence which is committed
using the technology; 2. The second kind involves offences which target
the computers themselves;3. The third category identified in the definition
used by the ACC includes offences in which the computer is used as storage for information about an offence.
hacking - programming for joy, often to breach security
on-line scams - using the web for fraudulent business sabotage - intentionally breaking/stealing from a
system embezzlement - using legally granted access to steal digital forgery - using computers to fabricate/copy
items; this includes movie & music piracy. information theft (‘phishing’) - acquiring data for illicit
purposes Threatening/bullying individuals.
On-Line Auction Fraud some e-Bay sellers bid on their own items! shill bidding (raises the prices of their items) eventually e-Bay added customer feedback,
etc...On-Line Stock Fraud spread rumors about potential stock
performance people buy the stock, so price rises perpetrator then sells his stock, making a lot of
$$$! sudden large volume of selling drops price purchaser loses most of invested money
What is Phishing? It means sending an e-mail that either: looks identical to an official enterprise e-mail directs user to a facsimile of an enterprise
websiteAnd then tricks a user into divulging: on-line user-id’s Passwords Credit card numbers phone numbersThese scams are a form of Social Engineering
Viruses and WormsVirus: A (usually) malicious program spread by (“infected”) users exponentially opening attachments causes virus to
replicate can stay resident on infected computers indefinitelyWorm: again, a (usually) malicious program spread by self replication over networks exploits known computer security issues to replicate often stay resident on infected computers indefinitely
Suppose a virus replicates twice at each infection:
1 infected computer
Replicates twice at each infection:
3 infected computers
Replicates twice at each infection:
7 infected computers
Replicates twice at each infection:
15 infected computers After 20 steps, there will be > 1,000,000 infected
PC’s. Each step usually replicates 50+ times!
Planned terrorism or other criminal acts (You Tube videos of students planning to kill)
Political/Religious protests (Environment, Anti-Abortion sites, Animal activists, etc.)
Pedophile web-rings Military (Spy rings, misinformation,
propaganda) Storage of illegally ‘hacked’ or ‘cracked’
passwords to sites.
Scam Scanning: automated software agents that “patrol” the
web looking for key phrases like “get rich quick” such occurrences are kept in a database Is this an invasion of privacy in chat rooms?Better user authentication: instead of passwords, use “biometric
challenges” retinal (eye) scans fingerprint feature scans
Search, Seizure, and Analysis of Computers: currently, the government can seize any
computer ... if there is “sufficient” evidence of criminal use equipment can be seized indefinitely computer forensics are needed to analyse
seizures:1. hard drives (deleted files)2. cracking encryption keys3. internal “wear and tear” indicating usage patterns
requires significant training/research
The End
3. You get a email or a chat room message that gives you a hot tip that the share price of Computecnics, an up and coming technology firm is about to rise and you must act now to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
4. Hi Dave, a stockbroker friend of mine just called me asking if I had a lazy grand lying around and if I did I should definitely follow his tip. Remember last time he gave me a tip and I didn’t follow it? Activise shares went from .83c a share to $12.35 in two days and I missed the boat big time! He’s just told me that Computecnics share price is only .79c and he’s heard they are about to release a product on the market in the next day or so that will drive their share price through the roof! – Somewhere between $14 and $20 a share. From a $1k outlay, you would get between $17,700 and $25,300!!!! I’m not gonna miss it this time and I’ve already told him to put me down for $3000. I’m letting you know so you can either arrange to purchase some yourself or email me back with your bank account details and I’ll do it for you. Just think in a couple of days we can be planning a holiday to the Caribbean!!! Say hi to Alice for me.
Jim
5. You buy shares in the company which are actually even lower than “Jim” said at .59c a share. Now that they’re cheaper you may even buy $4000 worth.
6. You watch as the next day the shares go back up to 79c and then next day they’re up to .83c.
7. You start to get worried after ten days when the price hasn’t risen above the dollar yet, despite it steadily rising.
8. Your worst fears come true when the share price drops from .98c to .06c a share and you realise you’ve lost $3593.
1. I buy stock in Computecnics at .09c a share. 100,000 X .09c = $99992. I send out spam emails and flood bulletin boards and chat rooms with notice
that there’s a fantastic opportunity to make money by taking advantage of a stock that is currently very low and is a certainty to rise.

9. I actually sold my shares when the price reached .98c10. 100,000 x .09c = $9999 11.Now – 100,000 x .98c = $98,000 (Profit of $88,001)
