Key Words

• Every two weeks you will be given 20 words to remember and then tested on during registration time.

• You will also be given a green vocabulary book to take your spelling test in.

• The top spellers from each form at the end of the term will be given a prize!

Study the word carefully. Cover it, write it yourself andthen check to see whether you spelt itcorrectly.

Mnemonics are rhymes orphrases that help you to remember the letters in a word. For example, themnemonic Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move can help you to remember how to spell the word ‘rhythm’.

Lots of words contain other words. You can remember how to spell “conscience” by thinking about the school subject it contains:con + science =conscience.

To remember how to spell the tricky word ‘necessary’, think of a shirt with one Collar and two Sleeves.

Breaking down a long word into affixes can help you to remember how it is spelt. For example,

Use the letterpattern ‘gu’ to associate the words ‘guard’ and ‘gun’. ‘The guard with the gun’ will help you to rememberthe spelling of thetricky word ‘guard’.Split the word into its

different syllables and sound each syllable out. For example,bi-cy-cle.
