From the Principal New Deputy Principal I am pleased to announce that Ms Jane Stanley, currently Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing Adviser for Ultimo Region, has been appointed to the permanent Deputy Principal’s position at Matraville Sports High School, starting next term. Ms Stanley is an excellent educator with experience in PDHPE education, student wellbeing, Aboriginal programs, and has a wealth of knowledge of academic and sporting opportunities for all students. Ms Stanley also has outstanding interpersonal skills; parents will meet Jane as the year unfolds!

New Head Teacher Technology I am also pleased to announce that Mr Greg Woods has been appointed to the Head Teacher TAS role in the school. Mr Woods has been at Matraville Sports High School for many years, is a qualified chef, and has been overseeing the TAS department during a period of re-structure. Mr Woods is a talented educator and we welcome him to the executive team.

Individual Plans for Every Student This week we held our inaugural Goal Setting Evening, supported by Westpac. Over 100 families attended the event with all students in the school required this year to set individual goals, and every student will have an individual learning plan. At the start of Semester 2 the event will be repeated, giving students a chance to reflect on their progress. This approach adds to our UNSW partnership programs, as tutors and support staff can find out the needs and hopes of all students and include collective goals in their planning.

AVID 2017 Advancement via Individual Determination is starting its second year at Matraville Sports High School. Please Google AVID Australia (education program) to find out more. AVID builds post-secondary skills for university and TAFE from Year 7 onward. It focuses on organisation, critical reading, and collaborative learning skills. We are the only Sydney High School currently implementing AVID, as have many schools in regional NSW, Melbourne, regional Victoria, and South Australia.

PBL Report 2016

Positive Behaviour for Learning has been operating in the school for 2 years. In that time many initiatives and systems have been embedded within our school systems to assist students and teachers to develop positive relationships creating a positive teaching and learning environment with consistent and clear expectations for student behaviour.

The school will continue to operate with the three R’s: Respect, Responsibility and Readiness to Learn as the foundations on which all students are able to achieve success.

Overall the PBL system is helping to support and drive a productive, whole school and classroom-learning environment. The focus is to create a happy and safe school for all students to achieve to their best in their chosen field.

All students are acknowledged by their teachers with merits that can be awarded at any time in any area of the school, for a positive contribution to a class or activity. These merits are the foundation on which students can climb through the new awards system put in place this year. All students participated in a dedicated lesson on this new system in Term 1.

In 2017 we will be building on this solid base with more whole school lessons and a focus on student participation and achievement in the merit system.

TSP Surfing Update

Mr S Green, Relieving Head Teacher PDHPE

Last year our TSP Surfing Students attended the 2nd Annual Talented Surf Camp 2016 presented by Matraville Sports High School. With special sponsors TRACKS surfing magazine.

We had gathered many coaches, teachers, Surfing NSW Staff, Randwick City Council and Students (75) for an awesome event! We had teams from Narrabeen, Bondi, Maroubra, Cronulla and the Illawarra competing on the day.

I feel this year’s event ran very smoothly and comments were very positive saying “it was more fun, exciting and engaging than last year”. I took on board some suggestions after last year’s event and after some careful tweaking of venues and some new faces on the staff and student roster; we have a great team and competitors for years to come!

Both Tye Koolis and Jason O’rourke represented Matraville Sports High School and acted as team leaders for our visiting schools.

Unfortunately this year the boys did not make the finals.

Visit to Belvoir Theatre Year 11 and 12 Mr P Brodie, Relieving English/History Teacher

Matraville Sports High School seems to have partnerships and relationships with half of Sydney - UNSW, Qantas, the Sydney Story Factory, Caltex, the Archibull prize, the ABC, University of Sydney and many others I may have forgotten. Our friendship with the Belvoir Theatre Company at Surry Hills is just another that keeps delivering opportunities for our students. Last year students visited Belvoir to watch Title and Deed and Ruby's Wish.

In Week 2 students from Mr Cheng's Year 11 and 12 English Advanced classes and Mr Brodie's Year 12 English Standard class took the 393 into town to watch a performance of Australian novel Jasper Jones.

This drama excursion wasn't without drama itself when we were told on arrival that the performance had been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. The friendly staff had a plan B however, and we were soon watching last year's live production of Jasper Jones on a projector screen in one of the large theatres.

Jasper Jones was funny and moving; the story of a small Western Australian town, an unexpected tragedy and an unlikely friendship between Aboriginal boy Jasper Jones and Charlie Bucktin. Look out for the feature length film version which will be in cinemas soon.

By all accounts our students enjoyed the play and got an insight into how drama conventions are used for their upcoming HSC. Thanks to Belvoir Theatre Company, Mr Cheng and Mrs Holloway for organisation and our Yr 11 and 12 students for their maturity and presentation.

Update from the English/HSIE/LOTE faculty

Mrs L Holloway, Relieving HT English/HSIE/LOTE There was movement in the staffroom, for the word had passed around… Mrs Bennett has gone, Ms Li returned…. Ms Dokmanovic, Ms Faber, Mrs Sentas and Ms Park nowhere to be found….. We would like to acknowledge Mrs Bennett’s long service in teaching at Matraville Sports High School. She has been a valuable member of the English/History faculty for over 20 years, which means she has taught at least 2 generations of students through our doors. We wish her well at her new school, Turramurra High School. Ms Li has returned from Japan! We are very lucky to have Ms Li’s energy and enthusiasm back in our faculty. Ms Li has been teaching English in a Japanese school for the last 2 years. She also is continuing to teach Japanese at both Chifley Primary School and Matraville Public School. Ms Park has accepted a position at Jannali High School and we wish her every success, as well as thank her for all her efforts whilst replacing Ms Li. Ms Li has also taken on the leadership of the SRC this year in Ms Dokmanovic’s absence. Ms Dokmanovic is on leave for 2017 and we are grateful for Mr Brodie’s continued employment with the school to fill in for her this year.

We are also thankful we have been able to hold on to Mr Cheng for 2017 as he dedicates his time to the Year 11 and 12 Advanced English classes, in Mrs Sentas’ absence, and continuing in the role of Year 10 Adviser, as I step back into the Relieving Head Teacher role for Term 1. Both Mr Brodie and Mr Cheng continue to volunteer in the Homework Centre Monday – Wednesday afternoons and we thank them for their continued support of this valuable UNSW partnership initiative. We welcome the return of Ms Corry, who is filling in for Mrs Sentas in Term 1 and a warm new welcome to Mr Singh who is filling in for Ms Faber at the moment. Lots of changes but life moves forward in the faculty with a very capable and dynamic staff. Our English teaching continues to be enriched with our connections with Sydney Story Factory. In 2016 students in Years 7-10 completed several SSF workshops. Congratulations to four of our Year 9 class members from 2016, Faith Butler, Sisifa Fakatava, Joel Tutt and Stevie-Ray Rugg who have had their work selected by SSF for publication in their State of Mind anthology. This year we have started off with our HSC Advanced and Standard English classes completing a Discovery - Creative Writing workshop and 7B is working on Personal Narratives. Other classes will have an opportunity to work on a SSF project throughout 2017. Our long-standing relationship with the Belvoir theatre company has enabled our students to experience live theatre for FREE for a number of years. Last year we attended several productions, including Ruby’s Wish for Year 8, and this year our 11-12 students have already seen Jasper Jones, with Mr Burn’s coming up in Term 2 for Year 10. Year 7 and 9 Geography classes have started on the road to their NEW Australian curriculum course with Year 8 and 10 to follow in 2017. Mr Bussell and Mr Smith will be attending a few professional development courses this year to enhance their teaching of this new syllabus.
