From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Another term has passed by quickly. The boys have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. It is pleasing to see so many boys making the most of these occasions and when representing the school, they are showing pride in their position and the school. Reports Over the past few weeks, class teachers and specialist teachers have devoted considerable time to and thought with the preparation of first semester reports. At school, we see this as a valuable communication tool providing parents with information about their son’s academic achievement, areas in which to improve and a way of providing clear information about co-curricular involvement. I thank the teaching staff for their hard work preparing reports to inform you of your son’s progress. Parents should be aware of the structure of our reports and the way they are designed. The key aspects are as follows:

Our reports are aligned with Australian Curriculum content that is taught in all subjects.

Reports are available in hard copy and electronically via the parent portal on the School’s website. Logon using your username and password and click on Academic Reports (menu option on the left) and click on your son’s name.

Reports from Prep to Year 4 feature specific information about each boy’s reading level and reading age. As a parent, this was important information that I wanted to know, hence it has featured on our reports for some years.

Schools are required to report about students using a five point scale. Previously this was an A to E scale, with the middle band being described as ‘C’. The middle band indicates students are exactly where they should be in terms of the progress. This has been modified so that the ‘C’ is titled ‘at year level standard’. This is better understood by both parents and boys.

As our reports summarize the full year, there is an additional column titled ‘Not reportable’ that means the associated content has not been covered as yet. Using a full year report mid-year and at the end of the year allows parents to better measure their son’s progress.

Please be aware these reports were sent home with your son yesterday. Staffing Towards the end of Term Two, Mrs Samantha Costello our Learning Support Teacher began her maternity leave. We wish Mrs Costello and her husband all the best for this new and rewarding chapter in their lives. Replacing Mrs Costello will be Mrs Joanne Jones and Mrs Anne Shelton. Both teachers are well known to the boys and have vast experience and expertise. Mrs Jones has taught in the Junior School for several years, most recently on a contract position in Year 5 and as an upper primary learning support teacher in 2018. She has a breadth of teaching experience in various schools, as a class teacher and in promotional positions, including acting Principal.

Mrs Shelton is a qualified Primary and Special Education Teacher. She has worked for several years as a Special Needs Teacher and has held the role of Head of Special Education Services at a local state primary school. Mrs Shelton works in a number of classrooms providing additional support for boys and teachers. Holidays As this is the final newsletter for the term, on behalf of the staff I would like to thank the boys for their efforts and achievements during second term. School resumes on Tuesday 16 July at 8.25am. I wish all staff, students and parents a relaxing and enjoyable winter break. Regards Jess Galbraith Acting Head of Junior School

From the Acting Deputy Head of Junior School GPS Football It was nice to see so many Junior School boys and their families attending the First XI football game on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval last Saturday, against Anglican Church Grammar School. The engagement across our community is an aspect that makes our school quite special and one that I very much enjoy. This year, the Year 10 boys, many of whom were former Junior School boys themselves, joined our boys to form a tunnel to cheer the team onto the field and involving them in war cries and chants. Mini games involving Junior School boys were played at half time. I thank Mr Broadfoot, Director of Football, for involving our boys on the weekend.

Lost Property As the end of Term Two draws near please encourage your son to check the lost property box for missing items. The location of the lost property box is just outside the staff room. Please use the holidays to ensure all uniforms and classroom items are correctly labelled with your sons first and last name. Any unnamed items will be donated to charity at the conclusion of Term Two. Gap Student We farewell Mr Liam Dudley today. Liam will be returning to England after spending a year working in the Junior School as a teacher-aide. We appreciated all of Liam’s hard work and flexibility in delivering quality support for the Junior boys and being able to support the Senior School whenever they needed him. We wish Liam all the best for his future. ISQ funded Teacher Coaching Program Each year ISQ (Independent Schools Queensland) offer funded programs which develop the capacity of our teaching staff. Following on from last year’s successful coaching program, two of our staff will continue to participate. Coaching is an approach to professional learning and school improvement, including student outcomes. The aim of the coaching program is for staff to work collaboratively to affect teacher change and impact on student learning. I thank Mr Bain and Mrs Galbraith for their work and the positive approach that aims to support all of our students across time. Holidays I would like to thank all the boys and their parents for their hard work and commitment this term and wish everyone a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Rob Jeffries Acting Deputy Head of Junior School Head of Teaching and Learning

Library News What is Readers’ Cup? Readers’ Cup is a school based reading competition. It is a competition that rewards students who enjoy and are good at reading. Just as students who are good at sport receive rewards, then good readers should win prizes, medals and trophies. Team Challenge Teams of students together read a set of books and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. All boys from Year 4 to Year 6 participates in the team challenge and so we have a champion team from each class. The class challenge is compulsory for all boys. Each boy is allocated a book for reading within their team; this means that each boy is responsible for at least one book, of course, they may read more than one book if they wish. Individual challenge Boys read all five books and then compete with other boys to answer quiz questions from the books. Only boys who have demonstrated that they have read all five books will be able to participate in the individual challenge. This is a year based challenge, not a class challenge. For example, a year four boy will compete against boys from 4B and 4O.

Regional Readers’ Cup This competition is organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a statewide competition for young readers. Teams of four students together read a set of books and then compete with other schools in the region to answer quiz questions from the books. The competition was introduced in 2004 to celebrate 50 years of CBCA in Queensland. Congratulations to the following students who represented our school in the Regional Finals at Glennie on Tuesday 18 June. The Eisteddfod schedule is yet to be released, but once times and dates are finalised a note with all details will be sent home. Could I please ask that boys dedicate some home practice time to their Eisteddfod repertoire for all ensembles. I understand many boys are in multiple ensembles and appreciate the time dedicated to these.
