Term 2

Hi to all the Woree State

School families.

ABOUT THIS PACK This reading pack has been developed by Woree State School for your child. It

contains a range of reading materials and activities to be completed at home by the

children with support from parents and guardians. The purpose for Week 1 and 2 was

to establish routines and adjust to learning at home. The purpose of Week 3 and 4 is

to offer curriculum as close as possible to what would have been delivered at school.

To continue students on the Road to Reading Success articles have been printed in

this booklet and can be used in conjunction with texts at home and online. Your pack

will have either a class text or the relevant pages photocopies. Please look after our

books and bring back when school returns.

HOW TO USE THIS PACK Daily reading at home is one of the best ways to ensure your child continues to learn. The more reading your child does, the further he or she will develop as a reader and a learner. When learning at home, you can support your child’s reading by setting aside time in the day for sustained reading. 10-15 minutes of reading a day does make a difference. Woree State School Road to Reading Success Log has been added so your child can continue on their Road. We look forward to rewarding students with stickers and certificates when they return to school. Additional literacy activities are optional and can be work through at your discretion.

Ideas to support your child to engage with reading at home

Your child will be able to read for themselves, however it is important that you look

for opportunities to continue reading aloud to your child, setting aside time for

independent reading.

There are many benefits to reading aloud with your child. For example, reading

aloud improves vocabulary, enabling your child to hear new words and language

before they independently see them in print. It also creates a special time each

day for parents or carers to connect with their child. Reading aloud also provides

opportunities to improve reading comprehension and exposure to a range of

reading materials.

Supporting your child's reading at home

Limit distractions such as the television and other devices.

Take turns reading with your child. Read to your child and then listen as they

read. Besides making reading fun, reading aloud is about making sense and

understanding what is read. Parents can help children understand a text by

making connections with what their child is reading and the experiences your

child may have had or heard about.

Ask questions about why, when, where, who and what to help your child gather

important information and ideas from the text. Who are the main characters?

Where is this part of the story set? Why did a character behave in a certain

way?

Good readers are always thinking ahead and predicting what might happen next.

To support your child as you read together you might ask questions like: What

will happen next? I wonder what would happen if? or Who do you think this

might involve?

Daily reading at home is one of the best ways to ensure your child continues to learn. The more reading your child does, the further he or she will develop as a reader and a learner. When learning at home, you can support your child’s reading by setting aside time in the day for sustained reading. Sustained reading at home means your child is engaged in reading a text for a period of time. This may involve you reading aloud to your child, sharing the reading with your child or, where appropriate, allowing your child to read independently.

Please see the Reading Booklet for more information regarding year level expectations for your child. Your students pack contains texts to read however below we have provided some useful websites and online programs you can access while learning from home. Many of these programs and sites have free trials available.
