Year3:Home-SchoolLearningMenuWeekly English Tasks

This Week’s spellings This week’s spelling rule: This week it is revision week! We have now gone through all the rules for year 3 spelling. The children will now need to work their way through learning the spellings for the common exception words. This can be done in small groups over the final few weeks. They could: Put the words into sentences. Create a story including them. Create a word search for a family member to complete. Challenge a family member to have a spelling contest.

Writing challenge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-B05YWKChU Watch this story starter and listen to the audio. I think their story starter is quite boring and you could make it more exciting! Can you listen to each sentence and use a thesaurus (or use www.thesaurus.com) with help from a parent or carer and find some amazing adjectives to make the story starter better? Can you change the verbs and even add some adverbs to make it more exciting and mysterious? Once you have done this can you continue the spooky story?

Can you take the challenge? Within your story can you include a simile? For example… The spooky corridor was as dark as a deadly spider’s eyes.

Reading task

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page This week’s challenge is to read ‘The Masked Cleaning Ladies of Om’. You will find it in the 7 – 9 years old section of the website above.

Page 12: Princess Jane sniffed as she spoke… how do you think she might be feeling? Page 22: The author uses the speech verbs shouted and cried. How many different speech verbs can you think of? Challenge

Imagine you were one of the masked cleaners… can you design or create a mask that you would want to wear? Extension: If you are feeling really motivated, BBC Bitesize are releasing daily English lessons to complete!
