For a truly rounded view of a university, you
should use league table rankings as one
source of information, but not the only one.
The main UK league tables are:
The Guardian
The Times*
The Sunday Times*
The Complete University Guide
* Subscription required to view
All include:
• Student satisfaction scores
• Student-to-staff ratio
• Graduate prospects
• Entry grades

• A personal statement is the first opportunity candidates get to
tell universities and colleges about their suitability for the
course(s) that they wish to study.
• 47 lines or 4,000 characters – whichever comes first
• Most universities do not interview so this might be a candidates
only chance to stand out from the other 1,307 applicants.
• When the admissions and subject tutors look at a personal
statement, they are likely to be asking two key questions:
1. Do we want this candidate on our course?
2. Do we want this candidate at our university?

s • Look at university and departmental websites.
• Take your time – it will be time well spent.
• Make it clear how passionate/dedicated you are
about your chosen subject(s).
• Do some research about yourself – i.e. what have you done? You have done more than you think.
• Get it checked – it could take many drafts to
get it ‘right’ first draft is due on the 16th of July
• Keep it both relevant and concise.
