Cricket

From left to right: Corey Maclean, Stephen Baker, Peter Screnci, Craig Schleker, Jarrad Taylor.

A large number ofUnderdale High School students took part in organised cricket activities in 1994. It was great to see 12 girls take advantage of the coaching clinics organised by Joanne Broadbent from the South Australian Women's Cricket Association. Joanne commented favourably on the level of skills shown by the girls and their enthusiasm for·the game.

Captained by Craig Schleker, the Under 15 boys cricket team won the Western Zone competition in the first term after successful games against Henley High School, Le Fevre High School and Woodville High School. The boys played very well as a team and show considerable potential for the 1995 open team. The school appreciates the involvement of parents in school sport and it was particularly pleasing that Mrs Schleker again assisted with the scoring for matches. Congratulations are extended to Corey Maclean, Jarrad Taylor and Steven Urbanks who formed part of the West Torrens Junior Cricket team that played in England this year.

The Under 14 boys took part in the SACA Coca-Cola Cup in Term 1. After a very good result against Le Fevre High School in the first round, they were narrowly defeated by Findon High School in the second. The boys can be proud of their efforts and I'm sure that many have a great future in the game. Once again it was great to have the support of a number of the boys' parents.

Cricket is alive and well at Underdale High School and we are looking forward to participating in both local and state competitions again next year.

YEAR 8/9 GIRLS FOOTBALL WHITE TEAM

on Wednesday 24th of August I had the pleasure of helping to coach the junior girls football team. We set off to Football Park with another girls team, a boys team, Mr Tidd and Mr Reeves. We played 3 games and won all 3 by large margins.

The team consisted of Kelly Schwung, Kelly Wafer, Kelly Webber, Kelly Chadwick, Kellee Crowder, Joanne Parkinson, Cassie Eley, Rachel Rankin, Melissa Johnson; Fiona Borg and Jenny Howard. All girls played exceptionally well continually building on their skills and knowledge of the game with Kelly Chadwick winning herself a football for her best on ground performances throughout the day. Thankyou to Mr Tidd and Mr Reeves for the support in organising our teams, jumpers, water, oranges, first aid kit and anything else that needed to be done. Also for transport, supervision and for giving the girls a chance to play football. Welldone girls. Sarah Johnson.

RED TEAM

on Wednesday the 24th of August I had the honour of assisting in coaching the year 8 & 9 girls 9 aside football team. We ventured to Football Park for a carnival against various schools in our zone. These included Seaton, Enfield and Underdale White.

our team consisted of Elena Maslarov, Rossanne Pelegrino, Nadia Battista, Mellissa stealstra, Natalie Parkinson, Stacey Mickan, Mellissa Drumm, Elizabeth Cluney, Tanya Downs. Altough we didn't win many of our games, the day was still successsful and enjoyable. The girls conducted themself very well and brought great credit to themselves and the school. As the day progessed the girls improved and started to develop more skills and work as a team. Thankyou to Mr Tidd and Mr Reeves who made the day possible, your efforts were greatly appreciated. Well done girls! Tanya Burton.

OPEN GIRL§ FOOTBALL Once again UBS entered an open Girls Football team in the zone and state championships this year. Our girls were the current Western Zone champions and set out to defend their title this year. They did this quite easily at an earlier carnival at Football Park in term two, when they annihilated Croydon High by over ten goals. The girls received medallions donated by the school for their success as there was no shield or trophies given by SSSASA for winning the title.

As Western Zone champions we earnt the right to compete in the State Finals in early term three. We were in a strong pool and had three victories and two losses. The eventual winners, "The Heights", won our pool with us coming t hird. This pitted us against our old rivals in Croydon again for fifth and sixth positions respectively . Once again we easily accounted for Croydon and secured fifth position overall. Considering that we had a mixture of senior and junior girls, this was a remarkable effort and the girls' approach and attitude was commendable in both carnivals. Mr Reeves and Mr Tidd coached and managed the girls and the respective members of the carnival teams were Sarah Johnson (c), Tanya Burton (vc), Torie Angel, Kristin Menz, Nicole Gordon, Jenni Vesnaver, Jenni Thomas, Rachel Atkins, Renee Findlay, Eileen Byrne, Kelly Schwung, Melissa Johnson, Cassie Eley, Michelle Fergusson, Maria Muscara, Belinda Murdoch, Belinda Thompson and Kellee Crowder.

·Sarah Johnson was voted the most valuable player for our side over the two carnivals, receiving a well deserved trophy for her efforts.

Indoor Rowing. On Friday the 4th of November, 8 students entered the western zone Indoor Rowing competition held at Findon High school. The aim of the event, consisting of four people per team, was to have each member row I000m on a rowing ergometer and time each performance. The four times were then added together to achieve the teams final result.

Underdale High school Team 1 comprising of Heath Bowbridge, Brett Burton , Sash Sevo and Jenni Vesnaver won the competition with a time of 14:33.1, with Jenni achieving the fastest Female time of the day of 3:26.9.

Underdale High school team 2 comprising of Rebecca T regweth, Bianca Collins, Kelli Williams and Belinda Thompson put in a great effort; Kelli and Bianca rowing for the first time achieved a team time of 18:14.0

A fantastic experience and achievement for all who took part. Well done

'B' NETBALL

It has been a pleasure to be associated with this group of year 9 and 10 girls this year. They were keen, reliable and displayed an excellent manner on court at all times.

A high level of netball skill was demonstrated in addition to versatility on court, with players being required to play different positions at times. During the season we played 9 games, 7 of which we won convincingly. !

Ul4 Knockout NetbaJI Report

In term two a number of year 8 and 9 girls went to Seaton to play the first two knockout netball games against Woodville and Seaton.

The girls had to win both of the first t_wo games in order to continue the competition. The first game was against Woodville. Our girls played excellently to win with a comfortable margin of28 goals-the final score being: Underdale 44 to Woodville 16.

·The second game was played against Seaton. Since the opposition was not very strong, the team were able to test new positions - still winning very easily, witb the last scores being Underdale 65 to Seaton 3.

The next match against Henley had to be won to get into the finals. In past years they had proven to be a tough opposition. Unfortunately two of our playerswere unavailable, including Melissa, one of the much needed goalies. The game was very close but in the end Henley proved too good for Underdale, beating us 37-26.

Many thanks to the two coaches, Eileen and Renee; also Miss Thiele for umpiring and Mr Tidd for organising everything. Thanks.

Cassie Eley

RUGBY UNION Underdale made a spectacular entry into the School Rugby Competition with a series of top perfonnances against much more experienced opposition and finished the season in second place behind Sacred Heart College, winners for the past three years.

Lack of experience proved costly in the opening match of the season, with only three of the team having previously played the game, but the commitment and enthusiasm displayed at training helped restrict Sacred Heart to a 29-0 margin.

· Then came a series of super performances against Eastern schools, Pembroke, Pulteney Grarrunar, Prince Alfred, Saint Peters and Rostrevor, leaving the team in second place after the round. The best wins were 32-7 over Eastern Schools and 46-17 against Rostrevor. The most memorable win was 22-12 against a very experienced Pulteney side.

Much of the credit for these wins rests with the forwards who proved to be the most powerful scrurrunagers in the competition. Chris Kokotis was an awesome prop who proved a headache for defenders when running with the ball. David Anderson developed well as a line our jumper and over the year was our most consistent forward.

In the backs the Gulaga brothers, Mervyn and Gai were a dangerous centre pairing while Ryan Chung Gon had an outstanding season as full back, relieving the pressure with long cleaning kicks and proving an elusive runner when joining in attack .

With the team in Second place in term 2, third term opened with a round robin between the top four to detennine final placings. Expectations were high. Our hopes of finishing top were dashed through an upset loss to Rostrevor. It was really a case of over confidence after an early victory earlier.

Page 10: YEAR 12 AWARD WINNERS€¦ · SEPE LISA BRUNO BOSSIO KENTSENDY . GOERGIA HONDRAVASILOPOLOUS BETTY BELEGRIS SANDRA VASSALLO DAVID MAZZONE TAMMY SIMS GORAN MLADENOVIC LUKE ERRINGTON

Next came Pulteney, with the team finishing strongly in another close encounter and finally Sacred Heart. A win would have given us a share of the title and for the first half we were well in the game. Unfortunately, at critical stages our lack of experience showed and a couple of mistakes let them in for tries to secure the game.

the team has nothing to be ashamed of, having exceeded all expectations in their first season and they certainly gave the independent schools a surprise. Well done everyone

Junior Softball Report At the time of writing this report, our Under 15 Girls Softballers are undefeated in term four, with one match remaining

It has been a most impressive team effort by the players, with everyone contributing to the high standard in a variety of ways.

Our pitchers have been: Kelly Schwung, Teresa Vlahos and Carol Evdokiou, all doing wonderfully in keeping opposition scores low .Marlene Salgado was a courageous and positive catcher, with Eva Quinn (Captain) doing strong work at first base. On second, Matina Kritikos made many safe outs; and Kelly Wafer and Belinda Thomson put in sound fielding at third base. Teresa Vlahos, despite a nasty blow to the face by a batted ball, was superlative at short stop, with Kelly Schwung an effective back-up. Outfielders, Kelly Wafer, Jenni Heward, Jessica Angley, Elizabeth Cluney, Kelly Crowder and Carol Evdokiou were energetic and reliable, never giving up.

The strength of the team was it's batting and base running, with many of the times at bat going to the 7 run 'mercy rule'. With so many excellent players , it is difficult to pick out highlights, but Kelly Crowder's home runs deseive mention, with strong support from Eva Pico, Teresa Vlahos, Kelly Schwung and Marlene Salgado.

If we do gain a premiership, it will certainly be well-deseived, and every girl can be justly proud of her contribution.

My sincere thanks to Miss Townsend, who has been indefatigable in umpiring coaching and supporting the team.

It's been a pleasure to coach such a talented and enthusiastic group. Good luck in your softball next year.

Mr Hastwell, Coach

PERSONAL REFLECTION ON PEER SUPPORT

Peer support was beneficial to me and the year eights that we were grouped with because we were able to help them and were able to learn how to get along with people not our own age. It was also a learning experience to teach me to help others.

Our peer support group was very loud and boisterous, and they were very hard to calm down when they became excited. The members of our group found it very hard to get along with each other and became divided between the boys and the girls. Personally I preferred the boys to the girls, as they were less annoying. Our group members were originally Paul, David, Ulysses, Tikky, Nicole and Ilena. Soon they were joined by Kelly who started at Underdale three days later than the others. Anna also joined our group on some occasions.

As each session went by I came to really like our year eights and I looked forward to each session. The year eights would be rowdy but did occasionally confide in us and look to us to help them when they had a problem. The girls confided in us more than the boys for some reason. The boys openly and sensibly discussed the subjects that interested them. w ·e relationships and peers.

had some good discussions about

I learnt myself that you need a lot of patience to be in a leadership position and I gained a lot more respect for the teachers that do their job well. At the same time I gained some patience (I think) and found myself becoming more and more concerned about the welfare of our group.

From time to time we had some conflict among the group, especially amongst the girls who were less easy going than the guys. Over all, however, we all got along well, although the wall between the guys and the girls lasted the whole time.

If there was anything that could have been changed about the peer support program it would be that our sessions were he1d indoors where adequate aduJt supervision could be given. Indoors would have been less cold and wet. I also don't think that year eleven students can have complete control over year eight students. It was because of this that I tried to make friends with the year eights rather than become like a superior person to them.

Despite this drawback I believe that every one gained something from the sessions if only a good laugh at the worst. Although I do believe that everyone benefited from the sup port, and received just that, support.

MINI-GLEND I

On Frida y, March 18, we celebrated a Culture Day on the eve of the Glendi Festival. Again, the participation of our students and staff made it a great success. Students dressed in costume and performed Greek dancing. Many enjoyed the delicious flavours of yiros, souvlakia, and honey puffs provided at food stalls. Still ot hers participated in soccer play-offs either as actual players or as part of the large spectator crowd. As a day to celebrate culture, it was an ideal opportunity for all concerned to share perspectives.

POCUSD Normally an ominous date - Friday, 13th this year at Underdale High School turned out to be a very POSITIVE day indeed. This was the culmination of an entire week where each faculty in the school undertook studies focused on Australian Aborigines and American Indians (both North American and South American). Friday, 13 May was our showcase day for the week when we opened Underdale High to eight neighbouring primary schools. Students from Years 6 and 7 came along to our school and worked side-by-side with our own high school students. There were many hands-on type activities which highlighted the richness of indigenous cultures.

ETEAM The E Team is a diiferent approach to work experience. You work as a member of a team. You learn about Total Quality Management(TQM)and then use this knowledge to identify opportunities to improve work.

You have a specific task to achieve during your work experience week. At the end of the week your team reports to the host organisation on the results of your work.

A Facilitator at the host organisation will assist you where necessary, but the 'E' Team is expected to organise its time to achieve the goal.

The first Team went to the Motor Vehicl_es Dept. and consisted of Amy Frazier, Chris Pope, Skye Colebatch, Ian Miller and Jenni Vesnaver.

The second E Team went to State Supply and consisted of Doan Ngo, David Evans, Renee Harvey, Zlatan Palic and Travis Murphy.
