  • A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY

Parents & Friends Quiz NightSaturday night saw a very successful Quiz Night hosted at St Francis Xavier’s School Hall by our industrious P&F Committee. The 80s themed night exuded an atmosphere of fun, frivolity and colour, which were all hallmarks for this era. As usual, there were dozens and dozens of prizes ensuring that nearly every family went home with something.

Mr Richard Milne, AKA the “Quiz Meister”, did a stellar job. Our thanks go to the SFX community for the use of their wonderful hall, all the families and staff who attended, the generous sponsors who donated and especially the Parents and Friends group for their excellent work and organisation in bringing the night together. We certainly look forward to an even bigger event in 2019.

Farewell to our Japanese Students from Kogakuin Junior High SchoolLast week saw 11 Middle School students from Kogakuin, our sister school in Japan, join the Gleeson College community for a two-week study tour. This tour presents a fabulous opportunity for the students to be immersed in the English language and learn about our unique culture.

The tour is also of great benefit to our students and especially those who are hosting one of the Kogakuin students in their home. It is a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. Unfortunately this visit is already over and we farewell our Kogakuin students this afternoon. We wish our Japanese visitors all the very best and hope they have had a wonderful stay in Australia.

Northern Territory Immersion TripStudents and staff departed for Darwin at 7am this morning to begin an 8-day immersion amongst the Indigenous community of Bathurst Island. Whilst they will be doing some sightseeing, the work they do with the students at the primary school is the most rewarding part of the trip. So many previous attendees have been moved deeply by this immersion, and rate it amongst the best experiences of their time at Gleeson College. We wish them a safe and fulfilling trip.

Gleeson Dancers Contest National Dance Star CompetitionWe wish five of our talented Gleeson dancers and Dance Teacher Mrs Sally Parsons all the best as they depart for the Gold Coast today to contest this prestigious nationwide competition. Good luck to Phoebe Surman (10 MSCOD), Sarah McIver (9 DMCUR), Natarsha Viskic (9 HMSCH), Taylah Viskic (9 HMSCH) and Camryn Reschke (8 FMWIL).

Staff FarewellThis week we farewell one of our amazing long-serving teachers, Mrs Lina Russo. Mrs Russo has accepted a position at St Patrick’s Technical College, which will further highlight and enhance her considerable skills in Vocational Education and Career development. We wish Mrs Russo all the very best for the future and thank her for her excellent service to our community for nearly 25 years.

  • LIVING OUT THE GLEESON 10 > Vinnies Winter Appeal 2018

Throughout Term 3, students and staff of Gleeson College have gathered

donations for this year's St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal, to assist

    families in need.

Each Care Group had a basket for students and staff to fill with cans of

food, warm blankets and clothes, which was donated to our local Vinnies

on Wednesday this week. Gleeson Year 12 student Nathan Williams (12 HSDAW) represented the College to present the donated goods to

Denise and her hard-working team at Tea Tree Gully Vinnies. Our Year 7 students assisted Nathan to load all the items into vehicles to be taken

back and packed into hampers ready for immediate distribution.

“It was great to assist families thatare less fortunate than ourselves.I was very happy to act on behalf of Gleeson College to present the

donated goods to Vinnies.”- Nathan Williams (12 HSDAW)

    & Mission

  • On Friday of Week 3 amid the wild and windy weather, eleven students and

one teacher arrived at Gleeson from our sister school Kogakuin in Tokyo, Japan. The group were thrown in the deep end with English conversation practice right away with Mr Dawson by practicing self-introductions ready for when they met their host families later that afternoon. Our host families came to meet their

students after school and off they went for the weekend!

Monday of Week 4 saw the students meet their English as an Additional

Language (EAL) teacher from Gleeson College, Ms Preece, and the group spent the day getting used to daily

school life in Australia, and enjoyed a short excursion to The Grove Shopping Centre. Tuesday they were thrust into the Home Ec kitchens to learn how to make ANZAC biscuits in the morning, then joined in Mrs Pill’s Year 9 HaSS Class in the afternoon to experience a problem-solving task. Gleeson and

Kogakuin students worked together to track the cholera outbreak in the UK in the mi-1800s using the same clues John Snow had. Students mapped the spread of the disease to try and

figure out what the source of the outbreak was, exploring how people’s understanding of disease transmission was very different compared to now.

On Wednesday, the students played a ‘Kaiwa Boardgame’ with the Year

12 Japanese Class to practice tongue twisters and conversation skills in their respective second languages. A few

lucky students even attended the Year 10 Dance that night and showed off

their dance moves! Thursday brought an all-day excursion to the Gorge Wildlife Park and Hahndorf, where

despite some very average weather again, the students had a fantastic time

seeing all the Australian animals and getting to hold a koala!

On Friday, the Japanese exchange students joined Mrs McCarthy’s Year 9 English Class. The students were divided into teams and started off

with an interview where the Gleeson students found out some information about their Japanese counterparts,

    including details about their hobbies,

    SAYONARA TO OUR KOGAKUIN FRIENDS

families and the differences between schools in Japan and Australia. The

teams then competed in a quiz where knowledge of Australian and Japanese landmarks and culture allowed them to share answers and work together. The

students really enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends and practice their

language skills in both English and Japanese. Later that afternoon Mr Ackan led them through a series of

STEM experiments and challenges, and taught them how to use the Dino-Lyte USB microscopes to examine various

    objects.

In Week 5, after an activity-filled weekend with their host families, the

students headed off to Kangaroo Island on Monday and Tuesday for more

sightseeing, experiencing our Australian wildlife. A key highlight was getting to

    watch the sea lions!

On Wednesday the students had the opportunity to participate in the Year 7 Mass held in our newly renovated St James Chapel, and make bookmarks

to celebrate Book Week with Mrs DeConno in Thomas Library on

Thursday. To finish off their time at Gleeson, students joined in with Year 8, 9 and 10 Japanese Classes to play various language games – a fantastic

opportunity for Gleeson students to interact and engage with Japanese

language and Japanese people, and for Kogakuin students to keep practicing

    their English!

Today we say goodbye to the students and wish them all the best for their flight back to Japan. We hope their

experience in Australia was engaging, fun and interesting, and they take back many fond memories to share with their

    friends and families.

A huge thank you to our host families for their time and generosity, to

staff who welcomed them into their classrooms, and to the whole Gleeson

Community for being so welcoming and hospitable. Last but not least, thank you

to Ms Hennessy for coordinating the homestay and tour! Arigato gozaimasu.

  • SAYONARA TO OUR KOGAKUIN FRIENDS

  • Wednesday was the Feast of the Queenship of Mary and our Year 7 students celebrated this with a Year Level Mass in the newly refurbished

    and expanded St James Chapel.

The students worked in their Religious Education classes to write prayers,

select music and decorate the chapel, and Monsignor Swann again drove over from Kapunda to celebrate the

Mass for us. Over half of the students were involved in either reading,

commentating or bringing forward candles, the bread and wine, and the

    Book of the Gospels.

It was wonderful to see a large staff presence and the way the students

responded to the prayers and joined in the singing was most uplifting. The celebration concluded with a shared lunch in the Year 7 classrooms. Thank you to those families who contributed

    platters of food.

As the first Year Level Mass for our Year 7s, the celebration was a great success and afforded our students the opportunity to showcase their

talents as a group and be less daunted about coming forward to read or

commentate in front of their peers. More such opportunities will become available as they progress to House Liturgies and whole College Masses

    and Assemblies in future years.

Mr Richard Sellers,Year 7 RE Teacher

  • YEAR 12 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION > Buddhist Faith ExcursionOur Year 12 RE Classes enjoyed an enlightening visit to the impressive

Buddhist Temple at Ottoway recently. Students were lead through the basic

principles of Buddhism and the role the Temple plays in its local community.

Presenters at the Temple graciously welcome our Senior students every year and are pleased we continue to educate our students on world

    religions.

Students will be reflecting on a key aspect of their visit to the Temple as part of the Stage 2 Religion Studies

and Stage 2 Integrated Learning courses.

Mrs Dianne Deptula,Stage 2 Religion Studies Teacher

  • Mrs Kelty’s Year 9 Japanese Language Studies students have designed and

created their own packed lunch called “obento” after learning about the

    Japanese food culture and traditions.

The students were required to include five colours (white, black, red,

green and yellow) in their obento, demonstrating balanced nutrition.

To make their obento more exciting, the students were also challenged to design ‘chara-ben’. This is a recent

trend of decorating obento using cute and whimsical characters. It was great to see so many well-packed obento

    with beautiful decorations!

  • DOORWAYS 2 CONSTRUCTION > Community Garden Project in Full Swing

Throughout Term 3, the Doorways 2 Construction (D2C) Class has been working very hard on the planning,

designing and construction of a Community Garden within the

College. This Community Garden has been supported by a Tea

Tree Gully Council Community Development Grant, as well as a

contribution from Gleeson’s Parents & Friends Committee.

Along the way, students have learnt a range of skills that contribute

towards their Certificate I in Construction course. Some of these skills include excavating, levelling,

paving, concreting, demolition, gardening and irrigation processes.

The students have also further developed a range of skills in

the use of hand and power tools. Check out some of the progress

shots below and stay tuned for its final completion!

  • YEAR 11 VISUAL ARTS > Observational + Figurative Folio Drawings

Drawing is a form of Visual Art in which a person uses various drawing instruments to mark paper or another

    two-dimensional medium.

As part of the Year 11 Visual Arts course, students have created a

‘Drawing Folio’ packed with creative sketches, detailed drawings studies, lots of examples of artists’ drawings and a personal diary of comments. As part of this folio, students had the opportunity to explore and

experiment in mixed media to develop observational and figurative drawings

    using our in-house torso ‘Selina’.

The development of the student’s skills and confidence have been wonderful to see, and the results achieved have

    been encouraging.

  • YEAR 7 SAPSASA NETBALL CARNIVAL 2018 > SADNA CourtsLast Friday, Gleeson entered our

first ever SAPSASA Netball Carnival held at the South Australian District Netball Association (SADNA) courts at Golden Grove. This was our first

experience competing as a Year 7 Netball cohort, and both our

GC teams are to be commended on their outstanding efforts

    representing our College with pride.

Our GC teams consisted of 18 highly motivated and keen girls, competing in Divisions 2 and 3. The weather held out nicely for us, despite some dark clouds

overhead, and both teams performed well on the day. The Division 2 team won all but one

game, placing 2nd overall, whilst our Division 3 team achieved some mixed results, but were competitive in every game, placing 3rd overall.

Thank you to Ms Rachel Staffin for her organisation of this opportunity and to all those Gleeson netballers from older year levels who offered

their umpiring expertise on the day. Thank you also to Ms Amy Norris (pre-service teacher) for her valuable contributions (and umpiring!) and to all the Year 7

students who represented Gleeson so proudly. It was also great to see so many parents out in support at

    the carnival!

Mrs Peggy Busbridge &Ms Candice Mitchell,

    Gleeson Netball Program Coaches

  • OPEN GIRLS KO NETBALL TEAM GALLANT IN ROUND 2 DEFEATThe final round of the Open Knockout

Netball Statewide Competition saw our Gleeson girls take on St Michael’s

College and Golden Grove High School at the Golden Grove Rec Centre on Monday 13 August.

We went in to the day missing two much valued players in Lucy Burford

(10 HSFEL) and Paris Sinclair (11 FSCAM) due to injury, so two extra

shooters had been added to the team with Eliza Dodson (10 MSSPI) and

Zoe Kreig (10 DSPOS) stepping up to provide shooting options.

St Michael’s got off to a good start but we were not far off the pace. We

battled hard all game in a very physical and feisty contest, eventually going

down by 10 goals. All our players were utilised in this game and the next, so it was very pleasing to see our depth and the commitment shown by our GC netballers. In the second game, Golden Grove HS narrowly defeated St Michael’s by two goals in a very

tightly contested game, so we were very aware that our next game was going to be tough and necessary to win convincingly to move through to the next round. However, this was not to be the case, and although most of

the game we were within reach, GGHS played well to maintain a five-goal buffer. When Year 12 player Lauren

Wright (12 MSSPI) was forced off the court with injury after an on-court collision, it meant our two young

Year 10 players became our shooting combination. To both Eliza and Zoe’s

credit, they did a very capable job and should be proud of their performance.

However, GGHS proved too strong and Gleeson eventually went down

by 11 goals. The girls involved did us proud and showed great talent and

    fight throughout the game.

In finishing, I would like to thank Coach Darren Saul for his time and expertise, Ms Rachel Staffin for her organisation,

and the Open Girls KO Team who represented us so well, especially the Year 12s who have served us so well

over a number of years. Well done and a massive Thank You!

Mrs Peggy Busbridge,Open Girls KO Netball Team Manager
