Year 10 2020

Information for Students and their Parents

Some Questions and Answers 1 What should I be aiming for? ♦ Good school reports in both Years 9 and 10 - to enhance your job prospects

and/or to prove to yourself and your parents that you are capable of tackling the HSC.

♦ Sound grades in all the courses you complete in Stage 5. These grades will be available for you to view on a Transcript of Study and on your Record of School Achievement when you finally leave school (ROSA). Transcripts are accessed on the website NSW Students Online (https://studentsonline.nesa.nsw.edu.au) Each student is given a login to their individual accounts.

2 What must I do? You must satisfactorily complete the following courses: English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE (History & Geography) and at least one 200 hour elective. You must have had adequate experience in Design and Technology, Art, Music, LOTE and PE at some time in Years 7-10. Sport (including carnivals) is also compulsory in Years 7-10. Your attendance must be satisfactory. This means that: you must attend school on at least 90% of all available school days; you must have a pattern of attendance which shows that you are making a

genuine effort. Your overall application to your studies must be satisfactory. This means that your attendance, effort and attitude must be up to scratch in all your subjects! 3 How does the grading system work? In all courses, you will be given a grade (A – E) by the school. In Mathematics you will be given either an A10, A9, B8, B7, C6, C5, D4, D3, E2. All these grades will be based on Course Performance Descriptors, which your teachers will provide you with a copy.

If you do not satisfactorily complete a course, you will receive an N grade.

4 How do I “satisfactorily complete” a course? You must attend lessons in that course for the required number of hours. If you do not bring the correct equipment (including safety equipment) to a lesson such as PD/H/PE, Industrial Technology - Metal, Industrial Technology - Wood, Agriculture, Science, or Food Technology, then you will be marked absent from the lesson. You must make a real effort in all class activities. You must make a serious attempt at all your assessment tasks. You must have achieved some or all of the course outcomes. If you fail to meet one or more of the above requirements you will be given an N determination. 5 When will assessment take place? You must attend lessons in that course for the required number of hours. If you do not bring the correct equipment (including safety equipment) to a lesson such as PD/H/PE, Industrial Technology - Metal, Industrial Technology - Wood, Agriculture, Science, or Food Technology, then you will be marked absent from the lesson.

♦ Each subject outlines its specific requirements for each of these assessment periods later in the booklet.

♦ You must receive at least two weeks’ notice of the due date of an assessment item.

♦ You’ll be given written notice detailing the task and outcomes to be assessed.

♦ Your class teacher will ask you to sign a form indicating receipt of the task. If you are absent when a task is handed out, it is your responsibility to follow it up with your class teacher.

♦ Assessment tasks should be handed in during the subject lesson on the due date.

♦ A student must be at school prior to the assessment or task being submitted

unless a doctor’s certificate is provided or an acceptable reason has been given to the Principal.

6 What must I do if I miss an assessment task or fail to submit the task by the due date? If you are absent for an assessment task because of illness or exceptional circumstances:

Page 5: Year 10 Assessment 2020 v2€¦ · ♦ You’ll be given written notice detailing the task and outcomes to be assessed. ♦ Your class teacher will ask you to sign a form indicating

Year 10 Assessment 2020 v2 5 | P a g e

• you must submit a completed misadventure form signed by your

parents/caregivers (with relevant documentation eg medical certificate) to the head teacher of that subject as soon as possible.

• Complete the task by the new date specified by the teacher.

7 What if a student is sick or misses a task through misadventure?

All tasks which form part of the assessment program must be attempted. Only in extreme circumstances can this be varied. Substitute tasks will be used if the use of the original task is impractical.

Where a student is absent for an "in school" assessment: • A medical certificate is to be provided in the case of illness;

• An illness and misadventure form must be used. A copy is in the back of this booklet;

• This applies to examinations as well; The illness/misadventure appeals process is designed for cases where, because of illness or misadventure, your performance in an examination is not a good measure of your achievement. It does not cover:

• Difficulties in preparation or loss of preparation time;

• Alleged deficiencies in teaching;

• Loss of study time or facilities prior to the formal study vacation;

• Misreading of the timetable;

• Misreading of examination instructions;

• Failure to enter for the examination in the correct course;

• Long-term illness such as glandular fever, asthma and epilepsy – unless there is evidence of a sudden recurrence during the examination;

• Conditions for which you have been granted a Disability Provisions, unless other circumstances apply, and

• Courses that are undertaken as a self-tuition student.

Upon return to school the student must immediately report to the Teacher of that subject with all necessary documentation in relation to the illness/misadventure. It is the student’s responsibility to take the initiative and discuss the issue with the relevant Teacher. Documentation must be submitted to the Head Teacher within three days of returning to school.

Cases of misadventure and illness will be evaluated and decided upon by the Principal.

8 What penalty provisions exist for late or non-submission of

tasks or unexplained absence when a task is set? a) Late Submission

A due date will be determined for each task. Any task submitted after the deadline will be awarded ZERO MARKS for assessment purposes, except where an illness or misadventure appeal is upheld. Students should hand in uncompleted tasks on the due date rather than be late. Teachers will provide feedback on the quality of the task. Assessment tasks should be handed in during the subject lesson on the due date.

b) Cheating If there is a clear evidence of cheating in any set assessable work, the students involved will be awarded ZERO MARKS for that submission. c) Non-serious Attempt Any student who presents work for assessment which, in the opinion of the teacher and the head teacher, constitutes a non-serious attempt at the exercise set, shall be awarded ZERO MARKS. d) Plagiarism Any student who plagiarises will receive ZERO MARKS. This includes:

• Downloading information from the internet and presenting this as your own work

• Taking information from a published text and presenting it as your own

work.

• Copying another student’s work 9 ‘N’ Awards If you get an ‘N’ determination in a subject it will appear on your Transcript of Achievement as ‘N’ (Unjustified). You must satisfactorily complete English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE and PD/H/PE. 10 What about school reports: are they still important?

Yes. If you are looking for a job in the next few years, your school reports and the comments on them will be absolutely critical! Employers simply do not want “dead wood”, rather, they want people who are prepared to work hard. You will need to make sure that your marks, grades, comments and attendance show that you are a good worker. If you are intending to go on to do your Preliminary and HSC courses, good reports will show you, your teachers and your parents that you are a serious candidate for senior school. 11 Can I leave school after Year 10? The school leaving age is now 17 years. Students can no longer leave school at the end of Year 10 unless they have turned 17. The only exception to this rule is if they have full-time employment, or are undertaking a full-time TAFE course. 12 Who do I see for more information? Mr Noonan (Principal), Ms Kenaly (Deputy Principal) and Year 10 Student Adviser will answer any questions you may have.
