different range of purposes.

Gideon is very confused about what it means to be a hero. Can you write him a letter in your lined book explaining what he needs to be like to be a real superhero (brave, strong, kind etc.)?

prior to this. Remember to think about the key features of a letter. Can you start with ‘Dear Gideon’ and finish your letter with ‘From’?

Literacy 2 To write for a different range of purposes.

Title: Rules of being a Superhero Discuss with an adult what rules are and why we need them. Can you think of any examples of rules? Watch the YouTube clip and gather some ideas. In your lined book can you write some rules of being a Superhero?

Watch ‘Ten Rules of being a Superhero’ on YouTube. Consider when we wrote rules about looking after the ocean during Science Week and remember that each rule needs a new line.

Literacy 3 To write for a different range of purposes.

Title: Superworm Chant Listen to the chant that the animals sing about Superworm. Discuss with an adult what a chant is and check the definition to see if you were correct. Can you write your own chant for Superworm in your lined books? Challenge: Can you create a chant that rhymes?

Watch ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson on YouTube. Pause during the different chants e.g: Superworm is super-long Superworm is super-strong Watch him wriggle! See him squirm! Hip, hip, hooray for Superworm!

Consider: What adventures has your super-animal gone on? Has he had to save another insect? Does your super-animal know Superworm?

Numeracy 1 To compare, describe and solve problems for capacity and volume. Key words for you to use; most, least, greatest, smallest, capacity, compare, order

Title: Compare Capacity Complete this activity with an adult. Ask an adult to help you find 4 containers that can hold water i.e. A cup, A jug, A bowl, A carton – Which of the containers can hold the most water? Can you put them in order as to which will hold the most and least amount of water? Use a cup to fill each container with water. How many cups does it take? Follow the link below and complete Week 2 - lesson 1. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ You will begin with the ‘flash back’ activities so will have to think really hard about things we have already learned in class. Next, complete the ‘Get the activity’ task either by printing the sheet or talking through the sheet with an adult.

You must use the link to complete the activity. Maybe you could complete the activity in the bath! You will need to know the symbols below to complete the activity.

Key words for you to use; array, column, row

Week 2 - lesson 5. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ You will begin with the ‘flash back’ activities so will have to think really hard about things we have already learned in class. Next, complete the ‘Get the activity’ task either by printing the sheet or talking through the sheet with an adult.

groups and building them up in columns or rows. It is useful to practise this lesson practically.

Science:

To be able to identify and describe roots.

To be able to observe carefully.

Observing

How many different roots can be found? Can we describe what they look like close-up? Take your child into the garden and look for ‘shoots’ and ‘roots’. Shoot being the parts of the plant above the ground and ‘root’ the parts below the ground. You should find shoots on trees or bushes at this time of year. Investigate: Ask the children to try and pull up a few weeds. Ask them to talk about the job of the roots. If possible, show the children some trees. Ask them to describe what they think these plants will look like under the ground.

Dig up some ‘weeds’ with a ball of undisturbed soil around their roots. Put these uprooted plants into a bowl of water for a few minutes, and then shake the root system to dislodge the soil. Now place the washed roots into a small clear plastic bottle filled with water. What do you see when you look closely at the roots? If you have a magnify glass use it to take a close look. Encourage your child to describe the roots and compare them to the roots of a plant What is the job of the roots? Recording The children could draw the roots that they have found. They could label

each it with the name of the plant and write some sentences about the job of the roots.

PE Perform simple movement or dance work either on your own or with someone in your family.

Warm up: To warm your bodies up, we would like you to go into the garden and practise basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, Now, we want you to pretend you are a superhero. All Superheroes have a villain, can you think of any? Work with your child, or with their siblings to design a slow motion conflict sequence, then choreograph a battle between good and evil (but remember not to make any real contact)! Consider how to make their battle exciting including moves such as blocking, twisting, ducking and dodging!

Can you video your child’s simple superhero actions? Please send these to us so that we can see them.

Note Demonstrate to the children what is meant by slow motion, showing how different moves between partners can suggest conflict without actually touching each other.

Superman – Lex Luthor Batman – The Joker Aqua Man – Black Manta

Theme 3 To plan and create a simple design to meet a criteria.

Title: A superhero shield Captain America needs your help to create a new shield for his superhero costume! Look at pictures of Captain America with an adult and describe his costume but in particular his shield. Think about these questions; Why would a superhero need a shield? What would they use a shield for? Look carefully at Captain America’s shield. Talk about the colours and shapes that you can see. Why have they been chosen? Think about what you might put on the shield that you are going to make. What colours will you use? What shapes will you use? What patterns will you use?

If you are looking for pictures of Captain America on an internet search tool; type in ‘Cartoon Captain America’ – You must work with an adult. It is important for this lesson that the children design their shield before going straight into making. A paper plate makes a good shield shape like Captain America.

Paper plate, card, old cereal box, paint, glue, paper, scissors Examples of shields to give you some ideas.

What materials will you use? There are 2 parts to this activity.

1. Design your new shield by drawing a picture and labelling the colours and shapes you will use – Complete this in your book.

2. Make your new shield using whatever resources you can find at home.

We would love to see a picture so remember you can email it to us at our class emails.

Theme 4 To be able to name the 7 continents of the world.

Title: Avengers visit the 7 continents of the world The Avengers have been working hard on their secret missions all around the world – They have visited all the continents! Think about these questions; What is a continent? How many continents are there? What continent do you live in? Play the 7 continents song on you tube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE Look carefully at a world map with all the 7 different continents clearly marked. What might the environment be like in each continent?

Activity: Can you write the continent labels on to a world map? This activity sheet is attached.

Talk about the map and model writing the continents in the correct place if you can. Challenge! Can you name all the oceans?

The 7 continents of the world activity sheet is attached for you to complete. Use the map below to help you if needed.

Other possible activities: Can you design and make your own superhero mask? Draw a picture of yourself as a superhero. Underneath complete these sentences… My superpower is… I use my superpower to… Take the seeds from a tomato. Let them dry out and then plant them in some soil and watch them grow. Can you grow some tomatoes?
